Overview

The AutoCut PL™ is a compact, convenient plastic tubing cutter designed for use with PEX and CPVC-CTS plastic tubing. Its primary function is to make clean, uncrushed, and square cuts quickly and with minimal effort. The tool is designed to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand, making it easy to use, especially in tight spaces where less than one inch of clearance is available.

Function Description:

The AutoCut PL™ operates by allowing the user to place the tool over the tubing, close a gate to bring the blade into contact with the tubing, and then rotate the tool while squeezing the gate. This rotational motion, combined with continuous pressure on the gate, allows the blade to cut through the wall of the tubing. The design ensures that the cut is made cleanly and squarely.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific dimensions and material compositions are not detailed, the manual emphasizes its compact size and ability to operate in tight spaces (less than one inch of clearance). It is specifically designed for PEX and CPVC-CTS plastic tubing. The blade is a replaceable component, with replacement blades available under Part # APB (Set of 3 Replacement blades).

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Use: The tool is designed for simple operation. Users begin by opening the gate and removing the blade guard (which should be saved and reinstalled when the tool is not in use). The tool is then placed over the tubing.
  • Cutting Action: The gate is closed until the blade makes contact with the tubing. The crucial step involves rotating the tool in the direction of the arrows (located on the face of the tool) while simultaneously squeezing the gate.
  • Blade Engagement: It is essential that the tool is turning as the cut is made to prevent damage to the blade.
  • Directional Rotation: The tool must not be rotated in the opposite direction, as this could damage both the blade and the tubing.
  • Consistent Pressure: As the tool rotates, even pressure should be applied to further close the gate, allowing the blade to progressively cut through the tubing wall.
  • Alignment: Maintaining a squarely aligned tool throughout the rotation is critical until the cut is fully complete.
  • Completion: Once the cut is finished, the gate is released, and the tool is removed from the tubing. The blade guard should then be replaced.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual includes important safety warnings. Users are cautioned not to insert fingers into the cutter, as this could result in significant injury. Additionally, a California Proposition 65 warning is provided, indicating that the product can expose users to chemicals including lead, which is known to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Users are directed to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov for more information.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: For longer tool life, it is recommended to occasionally disassemble the AutoCut PL™ and clean away any accumulated dirt, dust, or other residue.
  • Blade Replacement: The manual provides detailed instructions for blade replacement:
    1. Place the tool on a flat surface with the screw heads facing upwards.
    2. Remove all screws.
    3. Carefully remove the top half of the tool, which contains the screws, from the lower half. Wiggling the parts may be necessary to separate them and expose the blade.
    4. Very carefully remove the old blade using pliers. A caution is given that the blade is sharp, and extreme care must be used.
    5. Replace the blade by aligning the hole in the new blade with the peg on the bottom half of the tool body.
    6. Ensure the blade is correctly aligned and seated in its pocket.
    7. Replace the top body of the tool, aligning the pegs and holes.
    8. Replace and tighten all screws.
    9. The tool is then ready for further use.
