Overview

The GeneralAire® TERSus Models 1200 & 2000 are whole-house air purifying systems designed to integrate into ducted HVAC appliances. These systems are engineered to improve indoor air quality by removing particles, attacking viruses, germs, and toxic gases. They are intended for indoor installation only, specifically in attics, encapsulated crawl spaces, or basements, and are suitable for use with gas-fired, oil-fired, electric, and split-system heat pump forced air systems. It is crucial that these units are not mounted outdoors or on gas-fired or heat pump packaged units.

Function Description:

The TERSus Air Purification System employs three unique technologies to protect against indoor air pollutants:

  1. MERV 13 Nano-Carbon High Efficiency Filtration: This component traps particulates, including mold, bacteria, dust, dander, and pollen.
  2. UVC Germicidal Purification: This technology neutralizes bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungi using UVC germicidal lamps.
  3. PCO Module (Photocatalytic Oxidation): This module dramatically reduces toxic VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and odors.

The system is designed to be installed on the air-inlet (return side) of any heating and air conditioning system. Filtration, air purification, and sterilization occur whenever the air-handler fan unit is operating. The UVC germicidal lamps are wired to operate continuously, allowing the catalyst to burn off surface impurities, clean, and reactivate itself even during periods of non-use or no airflow. For optimal performance, it is recommended to program the heating and/or cooling system fan to run continuously or a minimum of 20-30 minutes per hour, 24 hours a day, to effectively remove airborne contaminants.

    • 1600 CFM: 0.30
    • 2000 CFM: 0.45

Usage Features:

  • Directional Airflow: Installation requires careful attention to airflow direction. The TERSus must be properly positioned for upflow, downflow, or horizontal airflow applications, with the inlet or return air entering the side containing the MERV 13 filter cartridge first.
  • Indoor Installation: Designed exclusively for indoor HVAC forced air ducted systems.
  • Continuous UVC Operation: The germicidal lamps operate continuously, ensuring constant purification and catalyst self-cleaning.
  • Voltage Selection: The ballast is factory-set to 120VAC but can be changed to 230VAC by sliding a voltage selector switch, requiring professional wiring to applicable electrical codes.
  • Sight Ports: The unit includes sight ports to verify that both lamps are illuminated after plugging in the power cord.

Maintenance Features:

  • Lamp Inspection and Cleaning: Lamps should be inspected and cleaned at least every 6 months. Increased frequency may be necessary depending on the environment, air filter type, and duration of use. A cotton cloth with isopropyl alcohol should be used to gently clean the lamp surface.
  • UV Lamp Replacement: To maintain maximum output intensity and effectiveness, UV lamps (GFI #4564) should be replaced annually.
  • Filter Replacement: The MERV 13 filter should be replaced every six (6) months (GFI #4581 for Model 1200, GFI #4582 for Model 2000).
  • Catalyst Cleaning: The catalytic aluminum substrate is self-cleaning due to continuous radiation from short-wave ultraviolet light. Do not attempt to clean it with cleaning solutions. If blockage occurs, the unit can be placed on end with the electrical enclosure facing up, and low-pressure compressed air can be used to clear the catalytic cells.
  • Door Removal and Replacement: The unit's door can be removed by twisting two locking knobs vertical to the short edge and removing the door at an angle. Replacement involves inserting the door flange into the filter side of the cabinet, closing it at an angle, and twisting the locking knobs horizontal to the short edge.
  • Broken Lamp Cleanup: UV lamps contain mercury. In case of breakage, disposable, non-absorbent protective gloves must be worn. Carefully pick up large glass pieces, vacuum the area, and dispose of all lamp material, vacuum bag, and gloves in a sealed garbage bag according to local waste management authority guidelines. Wash hands and clothes for added safety.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as lamps not lighting up (checking voltage, lamp connector, electrical connections, and replacing ballast) and lamps never shutting off (which is normal operation).

Safety Considerations:

  • UVC Light Exposure: Never expose eyes or skin to UVC light from any source, as it can cause permanent eye damage or blindness. Never operate the TERSus outside ductwork.
  • Mercury Content: Lamps contain mercury. Never touch a broken lamp or its internal contents. In case of accidental exposure, wash hands with mild detergent and seek medical attention if skin is pierced.
  • Electrical Safety: Always turn off and unplug all power to the unit and associated HVAC equipment before installation or servicing to prevent electrical shock.
  • Material Degradation: UV light can break down plastic materials not rated for UV exposure (e.g., wire insulation, flex duct, drain pans, humidifiers). The unit must be mounted at least 3" away from such materials, or they must be shielded with aluminum foil, aluminum foil tape, or sheet metal.
  • Duct Sealing: All duct openings in direct line of sight of the UV light must be sealed with aluminum tape or equivalent methods.
  • Installation Location: Do not mount the unit under a humidifier to prevent water damage or electric shock.
  • Screw Length: When mounting the outer cabinet, do not use screws that will extend into or penetrate the inside module containing the TiO2 catalyst or filter cartridge.
  • Qualified Installation: This device must be installed by a qualified agency in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and all applicable codes.
  • Voltage Verification: Always verify the correct voltage setting on the ballast before installation.
  • Protective Gloves: Wear disposable, non-absorbent protective gloves during inspection and lamp replacement procedures to prevent accidental glass breakage and to avoid touching the glass portion of the lamp with bare hands, as oils can reduce lamp effectiveness.
