Overview

This document describes the Glamox GFX series of explosion-protected floodlights, designed for use with High Pressure Sodium (HPS/HST) or Metal Halide (MH/HIT) lamps, or halogen lamps. These floodlights are suitable for installation in hazardous areas, specifically Zones 1 and 2 for gas and Zones 21 and 22 for dust, as per IEC/EN 60079 and IEC 505/506 standards.

Function Description

The GFX floodlights are designed to provide illumination in environments where explosive atmospheres may be present. Their robust, explosion-protected construction ensures safe operation by preventing internal explosions from propagating to the surrounding atmosphere and by limiting surface temperatures to prevent ignition of flammable substances. The design allows for the use of various lamp types, offering flexibility in lighting solutions for industrial and hazardous applications. The floodlights are developed, manufactured, and tested in accordance with EN 29001 (ISO 9001) quality standards and comply with relevant EU directives, including 2014/34/EU (ATEX) and 2014/30/EU (Electromagnetic Compatibility).

Important Technical Specifications

Lamp Types:

  • 70/150/250/400 W HPS/HST/MH/HIT tubular lamps with Edison Thread E27 or E40 bases, conforming to IEC 238 / 598-1.
  • Maximum 500W halogen lamps with E27/E40 bases, conforming to IEC 238 / 598-1.
  • Maximum 500W halogen lamps with R7s bases, conforming to IEC 7004-92.
  • 1000W halogen lamps with E40 or R7s bases (T2 temperature class, arbitrary position).
  • 500W halogen lamps with E40 or R7s bases (T3 temperature class, horizontal position for E40/R7s, arbitrary for other variations).

Ballast:

  • Conventional ballasts (KVG) conforming to EN 60598-1, EN 60922, and EN 60923. Specific ballast details are found on the data plate.

Ex-Protection:

  • Gas: Ex d IIB T2, T3, T4 Gb (IECEx EPS 12.0016X) and Ex de IIB T2, T3, T4 Gb (EPS 12 ATEX 1 411 X).
  • Dust: Ex tb IIIC T190°C, T290°C Db (IECEx EPS 12.0016X) and Ex tb IIIC T190°C, T290°C Db (EPS 12 ATEX 1 411 X).
  • Temperature Classes: T2, T3, T4 depending on lamp type and wattage.

Electrical Data:

  • Nominal Voltage: As specified on the rating and data plates.
  • Protection Class: I (according to EN 60598).
  • Ingress Protection: IP67 (according to EN 60529).
  • Ambient Temperature: -20°C to +45°C.
  • Cable Entry: Standard Exe/Exd type, minimum IP67.
  • Connection per Terminal Point: Standard 2 x 6 mm².
  • Terminal Connections: Max. 1 conductor per terminal point (L, N, PE). Suitable for flexible lines (0.5 to 6.0mm²) without wire end sleeves and rigid lines (0.5 to 6.0mm²).
  • Earthing/Potential Compensation: Adheres to EN 60079-0 item 15.4. Screwing torque for earthing screw is 6-7Nm.

Usage Features

Installation:

  • The floodlights are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • Mounting is achieved via a M106x2 ISO 965/1 medium/moyen threaded connection.
  • The front shield must not be mounted pointing straight upward.
  • Cable entry is via an original Exe/Exd cable gland (min. IP67) and a sealing plug. Unused openings must be closed with Exe/Exd certified plugs.
  • The cable gland holding screw must be tightened to 18 Nm.
  • Connection of cables must be done carefully, ensuring no insulation is clamped and conductors are firmly connected (1.3Nm for screw terminals) and tested. Conductors must not be transposed.

Lamp Replacement:

  • Before opening the floodlight for lamp replacement, the safety screw on the service cap must be unlocked.
  • Crucially, disconnect the voltage supply. For conventional ballasts, a minimum disconnection period of 45 minutes is required to allow the ballast to cool down.
  • The stud bolt on the front side of the service cap is removed with a screwdriver, and the endcap is removed.
  • For E27/E40 lamps, insert the lamp into the base by turning it to the right until it stops. Ensure the lamp base is undamaged, the holder's spring-loaded safety lug is functional, and the lamp is properly seated and locked against vibration.
  • For R7s lamps, press one end of the lamp at a slight angle into one base until it fits between both bases. Ensure the lamp base and glass are undamaged and clean.
  • Close the floodlight by reversing the opening steps.

Pre-Operation Checks:

  • Before putting the floodlight into operation, ensure it is installed according to regulations, connections are properly made, cables are correctly inserted, the floodlight is undamaged, and the lamp is correctly positioned.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning:

  • Clean the floodlight with a moist cloth only. A solvent-free domestic cleaner can be added to the cleaning water.

Repairs and Maintenance:

  • All repair and maintenance work must be carried out by qualified, authorized personnel trained in explosion protection by GLAMOX or equivalent institutions.
  • If larger components in the Exd room need replacement, the front frame with the glass panel may only be opened by qualified staff, as described in the 9840137700 repair kit instructions.
  • Personnel must have knowledge of relevant national standards and regulations, particularly for work in potentially explosive areas. GLAMOX recommends knowledge of IEC/EN 60079-14 (Electrical installation design, selection, and erection), IEC/EN 60079-17 (Electrical installations inspection and maintenance), and IEC/EN 60079-19 (Equipment repair, overhaul, and reclamation).
  • Before closing the floodlight, check that the gasket is undamaged (replace if necessary).
  • The screw thread, critical for explosion protection, must be undamaged.
  • Clean internal and external threads of the safety screw endcap thoroughly and coat evenly with acid-free grease. The grease must withstand temperatures from -40°C to +120°C.
  • After installation, components and cable entry must be tested for gas tightness.

Troubleshooting (If the floodlight does not come on):

  • Check if the lamp is correctly positioned.
  • Check if the lamp is faulty.
  • Check if the ballast unit is faulty.
  • Check if the starter is faulty.
