Overview

The Goal Zero Yeti 1000 Core is a portable power station designed to provide power for various applications, from outdoor adventures to home backup. It's built to be a reliable and versatile energy source, allowing users to power anything, anywhere.

Function Description

The Yeti 1000 Core functions as a portable energy storage and delivery system. It takes in power from various sources, such as wall outlets or solar panels, stores it in its internal battery, and then outputs that power through multiple ports to charge or run a wide range of electronic devices and appliances. This makes it ideal for situations where traditional grid power is unavailable or unreliable. The device features an efficient inverter to convert DC battery power to AC power for standard household items, along with various DC and USB outputs for smaller electronics.

Usage Features

The Yeti 1000 Core is designed for straightforward operation. To begin using the device, it's recommended to fully charge it by plugging it into a wall outlet. Keeping it plugged in when not in use ensures it's always ready, and this practice will not harm the battery.

When charging the Yeti, a blinking battery segment on the LCD display indicates the current charge status. Once fully charged, all battery segments will be solid. The display also provides an estimated "Time to Empty/Full," which dynamically adjusts based on current input and output rates.

Charging from a wall outlet is done using the included 120W AC Wall Charger. The blue LED light next to the INPUT port illuminates when charging, and battery segments blink until full. A full wall charge typically takes about 9 hours. For faster charging, additional options are available from Goal Zero.

Solar charging is another key feature, allowing users to harness energy from the sun. The Yeti has multiple input ports for solar panels, including two 8mm ports (one on the front and one under the lid) and a High Power Port (HPP). Each 8mm port can handle up to 150W, while the HPP can handle up to 300W, which is the total capacity across all input ports. When solar charging, it's crucial to ensure the total voltage from chained solar panels does not exceed 50V to prevent damage. The Yeti prioritizes inputs, with the front HPP port taking top priority, followed by the front 8mm, and then the under-lid 8mm. Solar and AC inputs cannot be combined simultaneously.

To power devices, users simply press the power button located above the desired output port. A white LED light indicates the port is active. It's important to turn off unused ports to conserve power. The Yeti can charge itself and power devices simultaneously.

The LCD display provides crucial information:

  • INPUT: Shows the power (watts) flowing into the Yeti during charging. This is particularly useful for solar charging, as users can see how repositioning panels affects power input.
  • OUTPUT: Displays the power (watts) being drawn by connected devices.
  • TIME TO EMPTY/FULL: Estimates the remaining time until the Yeti is fully charged or empty, based on current power flow.
  • BATTERY LEVEL: Shows the battery's capacity in 5 segments (20% increments).

Interactive buttons on the front panel enhance usability:

  • LIGHT button: Toggles the display backlight on/off.
  • UNIT button: Scrolls through different output and power consumption settings. Holding "UNIT + INFO" performs a factory reset, deleting Wi-Fi information and configurations. Holding "UNIT" alone resets the watt-hour counter.
  • LIGHT + INFO buttons (simultaneously): Displays the number of battery pack cycles in the input area.

The Yeti 1000 Core also includes features for specific environmental conditions:

  • Cold Weather Usage: In freezing temperatures, battery capacity can be affected. It's recommended to keep the Yeti in an insulated cooler, connected to a power source, to maintain optimal performance. The Yeti will not charge below freezing for safety reasons and will display a thermometer icon and "COLD" warning if temperatures are too low. Turning on the AC inverter can help warm the unit in a pinch.
  • Vehicle Installation: For vehicle applications, the Yeti must comply with UL458 standards, requiring an external GFCI protection device and proper grounding to the vehicle chassis. The unit should be securely mounted to prevent physical damage.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is key to prolonging the life of the Goal Zero Yeti 1000 Core battery.

  • Regular Charging: The most effective way to maintain battery health is to keep the Yeti connected to a power source (solar panel or wall plug) when not in use or during storage. This keeps the battery topped off and ready.
  • Long-Term Storage: If the Yeti cannot be kept plugged in during storage, it should be fully charged every 3-6 months and stored in a cool, dry place.
  • Battery Calibration: If the Yeti has been unused for several months, it may require several charge cycles to restore accurate readings for battery percentage and time remaining on the screen.
  • Avoiding Deep Cycling: Unlike older battery technologies, the advanced lithium battery in the Yeti does not benefit from being completely drained before recharging. In fact, deep cycling can be detrimental.
  • Troubleshooting: The device provides visual warnings for common issues. A red light on a port button indicates an "OVERLOAD" (power draw exceeds maximum allowance), which can be reset by pressing the button again. A thermometer icon with "HOT" or "COLD" warnings indicates temperature thresholds have been exceeded, requiring the unit to cool down or warm up, respectively. An exclamation mark icon indicates that the battery requires attention, and users should contact customer support.
  • Warranty: The Goal Zero Yeti 1000 Core comes with a 2-year warranty for lithium battery-based products, covering defects in workmanship and material under normal consumer use. To obtain warranty service, customers must contact Goal Zero customer service to receive a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number before sending the product for repair or replacement.
