This document is an Owner's Manual for the GoldStar FREEZER GF-161SSF, providing comprehensive information on its installation, operation, features, and maintenance.
Function Description:
The GoldStar GF-161SSF is a freezer designed for domestic use, suitable for both long-term storage of pre-frozen foods and home freezing of fresh food. It features a hermetically sealed cooling unit with a midget 2-pole motor and a rustproof anodized "Roll-Bond" aluminum freezer for high-thermal conductivity. The cabinet is bonderized and acrylic-enameled using electrostatic spraying techniques, and it incorporates high-density polyurethane thermal insulation for efficient temperature retention. A magnetic door closure gasket ensures a tight seal. The freezer is equipped with a reversible door, allowing it to open from either the left or right, which can be adjusted during installation.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Model: GF-161SSF
- Freezing Capacity: 9kg/24h (20lb/24h)
- Storage Rating: 4-STAR, suitable for up to 3 months of long-term storage.
- Cooling Unit: Hermetically sealed with a midget 2-pole motor.
- Freezer Material: Rustproof anodized "Roll-Bond" aluminum.
- Cabinet Finish: Bonderized and acrylic-enameled (electrostatic spraying).
- Insulation: High-density polyurethane thermal insulation.
- Temperature Control: Adjustable thermostat with settings from 0 (Off) to 3 (coldest setting).
- Power Connection: Requires a properly installed and grounded outlet; extension cords are not recommended.
Usage Features:
- Temperature Regulation: An adjustable thermostat dial (marked 0, 1, 2, 3) allows users to select the desired temperature. Setting 0 is off, setting 1 is the warmest, setting 2 is suitable for food storage in the fridge section, and setting 3 is the coldest. The freezer temperature varies based on food quantity, door opening frequency, ambient temperature, and location.
- Storage Time: The freezer is rated for long-term storage (up to 3 months) for pre-frozen foods. For fresh food, the freezing capacity is 9kg/24h. Users should always follow manufacturers' recommended storage times on food packets.
- Fast Freezer Compartment: The freezer includes a dedicated fast freezer compartment for quick freezing.
- Ice Cubes Tray: A tray is provided for making ice cubes.
- Storage Baskets: The interior features multiple storage baskets (numbered 2, 3, 4 in the diagram) for organized storage.
- Signal Lamp System:
- Yellow Lamp: Indicates when the quick freezing switch is turned on, initiating quick freezing. This operation continues regardless of the internal temperature or thermostat dial setting. It turns off when the quick freezing switch is disengaged.
- Green Lamp: Indicates a stationary operation state, meaning the freezer is running normally.
- Red Lamp: Illuminates when the internal temperature is higher than its proper set temperature. This typically requires turning the thermostat dial to a higher NOTCH. The Red Lamp can also turn on two hours after operation, irrespective of the internal temperature.
- Food Storage Guidelines: The manual provides detailed tables for various food items (e.g., beef, lamb, pork, fish, poultry), specifying recommended packing methods (e.g., aluminum foil, polythene bags), hanging time (days), conservation time (months), and thawing time. For instance, beef roast packed in aluminum foil can be conserved for 9-10 months and thaws at 1 hour per cm of thickness. Minced meat, freshly minced and covered with polythene in aluminum containers, can be conserved for 2 months and thaws slowly in the refrigerator.
- Energy Saving Tips: To save energy, users are advised not to store uncovered containers of liquid or hot food. Hot food should be cooled to room temperature before placing it in the freezer to prevent condensation. The door should be opened as infrequently as possible to minimize cold air loss.
Maintenance Features:
- Defrosting: Frost should be removed from the walls and shelves periodically using the provided plastic scraper to avoid damaging the appliance. A complete defrost (recommended once or twice a year) involves disconnecting the plug, leaving the door open until the frost thaws, and optionally placing trays of warm water inside to speed up the process. Frozen food should be wrapped in newspaper and kept in a cool place during defrosting to minimize temperature rise.
- Cleaning: Before use, and for regular cleaning, interior surfaces and fittings should be washed with a lukewarm solution of bicarbonate of soda (1 teaspoonful in 0.5 liters of water). Plastic parts should not be washed in hot water or exposed to heat. Detergents, soap, and abrasive cleaners are not recommended as they can leave odors or scratch the finish. The interior should be thoroughly dried before use. The exterior cabinet can be given a light coat of wax polish, especially in humid environments, to prevent condensation.
- Door Hinge Repositioning: The door hinge is reversible. The manual provides step-by-step instructions for repositioning the door hinge, including removing fittings, laying the appliance on its back, unscrewing and removing the adjustable foot and lower hinge, removing the leg, gently pulling the door downwards, swapping the hinge cap, unscrewing and screwing the upper hinge pin, and securing the lower hinge. This process requires assistance and care to avoid damaging pipework or adjacent surfaces.
- Leveling: The unit should be leveled to prevent vibrations. Leveling screws can be adjusted by tipping the cabinet slightly and turning the screws with fingers to raise or lower the cabinet. The front should be slightly higher than the rear to aid in door closing.
- Power Failure: Due to good thermal insulation, food can be preserved for at least 12 hours during a power failure, provided the door remains closed. If the power outage is longer, food should be consumed as soon as possible; raw food should be cooked and then refrozen.
- Vacation Care: For average length vacations, it's best to leave the freezer operating. For extended periods, all food should be removed, the power cord disconnected, the interior cleaned (including the defrost pan), and the door left open to prevent odor formation.
- Moving: All loose items inside the freezer should be removed or securely fastened. Leveling screws should be turned all the way into the base to prevent damage.
- Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes important safeguards, such as using the freezer for domestic purposes only, disconnecting from mains supply for maintenance, avoiding sealed carbonated liquids in the freezer, opening the door infrequently, not using sharp objects to remove ice, avoiding touching cooling surfaces with wet hands, and being cautious with ice lollies to prevent low-temperature skin burns. It also warns that an empty freezer can be dangerous for children, advising removal of gaskets, latches, lids, or doors from unused appliances to make them harmless.
