Overview

The Goodman GSX 16 SEER Condensing Unit is an outdoor air conditioning unit designed for residential and light commercial applications, utilizing R-410A refrigerant for cooling. It is available in various ton sizes, ranging from 1.5 to 5 tons, and operates on 208/230 volt single-phase power. The unit's primary function is to cool conditioned spaces by pulling condenser air through its coil with a direct-drive propeller fan, then discharging the air out of the top of the cabinet. It is designed for free air discharge, meaning no additional resistance from ductwork should be attached.

Technical Specifications:

The GSX16 series includes several models, each with specific cooling capacities and electrical requirements. For instance, the GSX160181F* model has a cooling capacity of 18,000 BTUH, while the GSX160601F* model offers 60,000 BTUH. Decibel levels for most models are around 73.5 to 75.0, indicating a relatively consistent noise output across the range.

Compressor specifications vary by model. For example, the GSX160181F* has a Rated Load (R.L.) Amps of 9.0 and a Locked Rotor (L.R.) Amps of 46.0, whereas the GSX160601F* has an R.L. Amps of 21.4 and an L.R. Amps of 135.0. Condenser fan motors typically range from 1/6 to 1/3 horsepower, with Full Load (F.L.) Amps between 1.10 and 2.80.

Refrigerant line connections are sweat type for field piping with refrigerant type copper. Liquid line sizes are consistently 3/8" O.D. across all models. Suction line sizes vary, with 7/8" O.D. for smaller units (e.g., GSX160181F*) and 3/4" O.D. for others (e.g., GSX160241F*), while larger units (e.g., GSX160421F* and above) use 7/8" O.D. for both liquid and suction valve connections. Refrigerant charge amounts are factory installed for a 15-foot 3/8" liquid line and a matching evaporator coil, ranging from 80.0 oz for the GSX160181F* to 290.0 oz for the GSX160601F*.

Electrical power supply for all listed models is 208/230V, 60Hz, single-phase. Minimum Circuit Ampacity (MCA) ranges from 12.4 amps (GSX160181F*) to 29.6 amps (GSX160601F*), and Maximum Overcurrent Device (MOCP) ratings are between 20 and 50 amps. The acceptable voltage range is 197/253 volts. Electrical conduit size is typically 1/2 or 3/4 inch. Approximate shipping weights range from 193 lbs to 338 lbs, depending on the model.

Usage Features:

The GSX16 models are equipped with Copeland Scroll "Ultratech" Series compressors, specifically designed for R-410A refrigerant. These compressors are known for their tolerance to small quantities of liquid refrigerant, although continued floodback or flooded start conditions should be avoided to prevent bearing damage. The units are charged for a 15-foot refrigerant line set and require a specified TXV Kit to be installed on the indoor coil, which is determined by the outdoor unit, not the indoor coil.

Proper sizing of the system is crucial and should be based on heat gain and loss calculations according to ACCA methods or equivalent standards to ensure adequate capacity for heating or cooling the conditioned space.

Maintenance Features:

The manual emphasizes that service procedures should only be performed by qualified, professionally trained HVAC technicians. All safety information, including disconnecting all power before servicing, must be followed. The unit's design allows for free air discharge, and no additional resistance from ductwork should be attached.

Special consideration must be given to the location of the condensing unit(s) to ensure proper air circulation and prevent interference from structures or other obstructions. A minimum of 60 inches between the top of the unit and any overhead obstruction is recommended for vertical conditions. Corner installations are strongly discouraged. The unit should not be located directly under a gas appliance vent termination, within 3 feet of a clothes dryer vent, where refreezing defrost water could create a hazard, or where water may rise into the unit.

The "Ultratech" Series scroll compressors use "POE" or polyolester oil, which is not compatible with mineral oil-based lubricants. If additional oil is required, only "POE" oil must be used. Operating pressures and amp draws may differ from standard reciprocating and/or scroll compressors, with detailed information found in the "Cooling Performance Data" section.

For electrical connections, it is important to properly size fuses/circuit breakers and wires in accordance with national and/or local electrical codes, using copper wire only. The unit's serial plate should always be referenced for the most up-to-date general and electrical information.

The manual also includes a "Performance Test" section, which outlines expected operating parameters. A properly operating unit should have subcooling values within plus or minus 2 degrees of the installation instructions, typical Delta T values within plus or minus 3 degrees, HI PR within plus or minus 10 PSIG, LO PR within plus or minus 5 PSIG, and amp draws within plus or minus 3 Amps of the typical value. Pressures are measured at the liquid and suction service valve ports. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations regarding refrigerants must be followed during introduction and disposal to avoid environmental harm and substantial fines. It is also warned not to connect or use any device not design certified by Goodman for use with the unit, as this could lead to property damage, personal injury, reduced performance, or hazardous conditions. Combustible materials, gasoline, or other flammable liquids or vapors should not be stored in the vicinity of the appliance.
