The GRAYL GEOPRESS Purifier is a portable water purification device designed for global protection against waterborne contaminants. It offers a simple, fast, and effective way to obtain clean, safe drinking water from various freshwater sources.
The GEOPRESS Purifier operates on a "fill, press, drink" principle, utilizing a replaceable cartridge that removes a wide range of harmful substances. It is engineered to eliminate 99.99% of viruses (including Rotavirus, Norovirus, and Hepatitis A), 99.9999% of bacteria (such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Dysentery), and 99.9% of protozoa (like Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and Amoebae). Beyond microbiological threats, the purifier also filters particulates including microplastics, sediment, and silt. Furthermore, it addresses chemical contaminants like chlorine, benzene, and chloroform, and heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, and chromium through ion exchange and activated carbon filtration.
The purification process involves forcing dirty water through a non-woven ceramic media filter. This media provides structure for two key technologies: positively charged ions, which act as "molecular magnets" to permanently bind pathogens, and powdered activated carbon, which adsorbs chemicals, heavy metals, flavors, and odors. The result is clean, purified water ready for consumption.
The GEOPRESS is designed for ease of use and portability. To operate, the user first separates the Inner Press from the Outer Refill by grasping each part and pulling them apart with a quick twist. Dirty water is then scooped or filled into the Outer Refill from a stream, lake, bathroom sink, or hostel tap. Before pressing, the SimpleVent™ cap is twisted a half-turn to allow air to vent during the purification process. The Inner Press is then placed into the Outer Refill, and the user applies steady downward force, utilizing their body weight, to press the water through the cartridge. This process is remarkably fast, yielding 24 fluid ounces (710 ml) of clean, safe drinking water in just 8 seconds.
The device features a TopoGrip™—a durable, tactile non-slip grip material on heavy-use surfaces—and SoftPress™ Pads for comfortable, ergonomic pressing. The Drink Cap is designed for on-the-go hydration, protecting against cross-contamination, and includes a carrying handle for easy transport. The transparent Inner Press stores the purified water, ensuring dirty water never comes into contact with the clean supply. A Max Fill Line indicates the maximum volume of water the device can hold, and a non-slip base provides durable protection.
The GEOPRESS is incredibly durable, capable of withstanding drop tests up to 10 feet (3 meters) when full. It is suitable for various environments, from remote wilderness to urban travel, providing global virus protection wherever clean water is scarce.
Proper installation of the replaceable cartridge is crucial to prevent cross-contamination. To install, the cartridge is inserted into the bottom of the Inner Press and rotated clockwise until it clicks and locks into place. For removal, it is rotated counter-clockwise until it separates.
The purifier cartridge itself should not be washed with soap or other cleaning agents, as this can damage the media. It can, however, be rinsed with clean water as needed. The other components—the Outer Refill, Inner Press, and Drink-Thru Cap—can be hand-washed with warm, soapy water. None of the components should be placed in a dishwasher.
For long-term storage, it's important to prepare the GEOPRESS to prevent mildew and odors. This involves performing a "dry press" by pressing the wet Purifier into an empty Outer Refill and dumping any excess water. The cartridge should then be allowed to air-dry thoroughly, which may take 2-4 days depending on humidity. All other parts should be hand-washed with warm, soapy water. Reassembling the unit creates an airtight seal for storage. Properly cared for, cartridges can last up to three years after opening.
The lifespan of a cartridge is approximately 350 cycles (65 gallons/250 liters) when used with clear water. High levels of silt or sediment will shorten its lifespan. A cartridge needs replacement when the "press time" reaches approximately 25 seconds or after three years from first use. Unused, airtight cartridges have a shelf life of 10 years.
When traveling by airplane, it's recommended to fly with the GEOPRESS completely empty or completely full to prevent leaks due to cabin pressure changes. Once at cruising altitude, it can be used normally.
The device is designed for freshwater purification only; no salt or brackish water should be used. Users should always source the cleanest (least silty) water available, as streams are generally better than lakes and bogs. The GEOPRESS is not designed to protect against industrial disasters, very high lead levels, mercury, nuclear disasters, or toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria); alternative water sources should be sought in such situations. Tannins, natural organic compounds that can turn water tea-colored, can prematurely stop cartridges from working, so water with high tannin concentrations should be avoided.
The GEOPRESS should not be exposed to freezing temperatures for extended periods. While one freeze/thaw cycle may not significantly degrade it, it should not be used after three or more. It's recommended to keep it full of water and insulate it in a jacket or sleeping bag in freezing conditions. The purifier cartridge should not be exposed to water hotter than 120°F (50°C), as this will harm the media, and the GEOPRESS should not be microwaved.
