Overview

The Greenlee GT-12A Voltage Detector is a handheld instrument designed to check for the presence of AC voltage. It signals the user with an intermittent audible tone and a flashing LED indicator. The audible tone can be disabled using the "Smart ON/OFF" button.

Function Description:

The primary function of the GT-12A is to detect AC voltage. It is useful for identifying hot and neutral conductors, finding breaks in wires, and detecting the presence of AC voltage at various electrical points such as outlets, switches, circuit breakers, fuses, and wires and cables, including ROMEX® nonmetallic building electrical wire.

The device incorporates a self-test feature that continuously tests the integrity of the entire unit, including the antenna, every 2 seconds. This ensures the device is functioning correctly before use. It also includes a low battery indication, where the LED will remain on continuously if the batteries are low, prompting replacement. An auto power-off feature is also integrated to conserve battery life.

To find a break in a hot conductor, the user traces the wire until the signal stops. For a break in a neutral conductor, a load must be connected between the hot and neutral, and then the wire is traced until the signal stops.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Indicators: LED and Tone
  • Voltage Range: 50 VAC to 1000 VAC
  • Frequency Range: 50 Hz to 500 Hz
  • Measurement Category: Category IV, 1000 V per UL 61010-1. This category signifies primary supply level, suitable for overhead lines and other cable systems, including cables, meters, transformers, and other exterior equipment owned by the power utility.
  • Operating Temperature: -10 °C to 50 °C (14 °F to 122 °F)
  • Humidity: Less than 80% relative humidity (noncondensing)
  • Altitude: 2000 m (6500') maximum
  • Use Environment: Indoor use only
  • Pollution Degree: 2
  • Battery: Two 1.5 volt batteries (AAA, NEDA 24A or IEC LR03)
  • Protection: The tool is protected by U.S. Patent No. 7,733,078 and Canadian Patent No. 2,607,922.

Usage Features:

  • Power On/Off: The unit is turned on by pushing down on the "Smart ON/OFF" button.
    • Beeper Enable: Release the button after the LED flashes one time.
    • Beeper Disable: Release the button after the LED flashes two times.
  • Self-Test and Battery Check: The GT-12A performs a self-test and a battery check every 2 seconds. Before use, the user must verify that the LED is flashing periodically, indicating successful tests. If the self-test fails, the unit will turn off automatically and should not be used. If batteries are low, the LED will remain on continuously, requiring immediate replacement.
  • Pre-Use Verification: Before each use, and after use, the unit must be tested on a known live circuit to verify proper operation. The LED should flash to indicate voltage presence (50 to 1000 VAC), and the beeper should sound (unless disabled). If the unit does not function as expected, batteries should be replaced. If the issue persists, technical assistance should be sought.
  • Detection: To detect voltage, the tip of the detector is placed on or near the circuit or unit to be tested.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Do not assume that no voltage indication means the circuit is de-energized. Always follow the 3-point safety method (test on known live circuit, test the circuit, test on known live circuit again).
    • Do not use the unit if it is wet or damaged.
    • Do not apply more than the rated voltage between the tip and earth ground.
    • Do not operate with the case open.
    • The tester may not detect voltage through metal conduit, on armored or shielded cable, on sheathed nonmetallic cable saturated with water, or through walls.
    • Using the unit near equipment that generates electromagnetic interference can result in unstable or inaccurate readings.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement:
    1. Pull back on the battery door to slide it open and reveal the batteries.
    2. Replace the batteries, observing polarity.
    3. Line up the rails on the body and battery door, then slide the door forward until it latches.
  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Abrasives or solvents should not be used.
  • Repair: The unit contains no user-serviceable parts, and users should not attempt to repair it.
  • Environmental Care: Do not expose the unit to extremes in temperature or high humidity.
  • Recycling: The manual explicitly states "Do not discard this product or throw away!" and directs users to www.greenlee.com for recycling information.

Warranty:

Greenlee Textron Inc. provides a Lifetime Limited Warranty to the original purchaser, ensuring products are free from defects in workmanship and material for their useful life, excluding normal wear and abuse. This warranty is subject to the terms and conditions of Greenlee Textron Inc.'s standard one-year limited warranty.
