This document is an owner's manual for the Greenworks 40V 14" Brushless Chainsaw, model CS40L210.

Function Description:

The Greenworks 40V 14" Brushless Chainsaw is a cordless power tool designed for cutting wood. It is intended for tasks such as felling small trees, bucking logs, limbing fallen trees, and pruning live trees. The brushless motor technology aims to provide efficient power delivery and extended tool life. The chainsaw operates on a 40V Lithium-Ion battery, offering cordless convenience for outdoor use.

Usage Features:

The chainsaw is designed for ease of use and safety, with several features to assist the operator:

  • Cordless Operation: Powered by a 40V Lithium-Ion battery, providing freedom of movement without the need for an electrical outlet.
  • Safety Lock and Trigger: A safety lock must be pressed before the trigger can be engaged, preventing accidental starting. Releasing the trigger automatically resets the safety lock.
  • Proper Grip and Stance: The manual emphasizes maintaining a firm, two-handed grip on both the front and rear handles, with thumbs and fingers encircling the handles, to resist kickback forces and maintain control. The operator's body should be to the left of the chain line.
  • Kickback Prevention: The chainsaw is equipped with a low-kickback saw chain, which has rakers (depth gauges) designed to minimize the force of kickback reactions. Operators are advised to avoid overreaching, cutting above shoulder height, and tip contact to further prevent kickback.
  • Oil Indicator: A "Quick View Oil Indicator" allows the user to easily check the bar and chain oil level.
  • Chain Tensioner Screw: Allows for easy adjustment of chain tension using the provided scrench.
  • Scabbard: Included for safe transport and storage of the chainsaw, covering the guide bar and chain.
  • Battery Capacity Indicator (BCI): Lights on the battery pack indicate the current power level (full, 75%, 50%, 25%, or less than 10%).
  • Cutting Procedures: Detailed instructions are provided for various cutting operations, including removing buttress roots, proper tree felling techniques (notched undercut, felling backcut), bucking logs (overbucking, underbucking, bucking with a wedge), limbing, and pruning. Specific warnings are given for cutting springpoles due to their inherent danger.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the chainsaw's performance and longevity:

  • Bar and Chain Lubrication: The chainsaw requires bar and chain lubricant, which should be added to the oil tank. The oil level should be checked every 20 minutes of use. The manual warns against using dirty or contaminated oils and notes that oil seepage is normal when the saw is not in use.
  • Cleaning: The battery pack should be removed before cleaning. Air vents should be kept clear of dust and debris using compressed air or a vacuum. The housing and plastic components can be wiped with a moist, soft cloth, avoiding strong solvents or detergents.
  • Battery Charging: The battery should be fully charged before first use. The charger includes LED indicators to communicate battery status (charging, fully charged, too warm, no battery, defective battery). The charger can be wall-mounted.
  • Guide Bar and Chain Replacement: Instructions are provided for removing and replacing the guide bar and chain, emphasizing the importance of using identical replacement parts and ensuring the chain is not put on backward.
  • Chain Tension Adjustment: The chain tension should be checked and adjusted regularly, especially for new chains which tend to stretch. Proper tension is achieved when the chain can be lifted 3mm to 4mm from the edge of the guide bar in the middle.
  • Chain Maintenance (Sharpening): The manual details how to sharpen the cutters using a 5/32 in. (4 mm) diameter round file and holder, maintaining specific angles (30° top plate filing angle, 80° side plate filing angle). It also explains how to adjust the raker (depth gauge) clearance to 1/32 in. (0.6 mm) using a flat file and depth gauge jointer.
  • Guide Bar Maintenance: The guide bar should be reversed weekly to distribute wear and cleaned daily. Burrs or feathering on the bar rails should be smoothed with a file. The guide bar tip sprocket should be lubricated weekly using a grease syringe, and lubrication holes and chain groove should be kept free from impurities.
  • Battery Disposal: Specific instructions are provided for environmentally safe disposal of Lithium-Ion batteries, including covering terminals with tape and taking them to a certified recycling/disposal center. Warnings are given against incinerating or placing batteries in household trash or landfills.
