This document is an owner's manual for "The Grillman Grill," a series of gas-fired outdoor cooking appliances. The manual covers models 200YG, 300YG, 400YG, and 600PC. It provides essential information for the safe and proper operation, maintenance, and storage of these grills.
Function Description:
The Grillman Grill is a portable liquid propane (L.P.) gas barbecue grill designed for outdoor cooking. It utilizes L.P. gas as fuel, which is stored under high pressure in a cylinder and vaporizes when released. The grill features a fuel delivery system comprising an L.P. gas supply cylinder, a fuel regulator with a hose, and a gas-control valve. The igniter system, consisting of an igniter unit, a gas-collector box, a ceramic electrode, and lead wire, is designed to generate an electric spark to ignite the gas at the burner. The grill is intended for cooking various foods, with different flame settings for searing, general cooking, and rotisserie.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Fuel Type: Liquid Propane (L.P.) gas only. Natural gas is not to be used.
- L.P. Gas Cylinder Specifications:
- Dimensions: Approximately 12 inches in diameter and 18 inches high.
- Maximum Fuel Capacity: 20 pounds of propane.
- Full-Cylinder Weight: Approximately 38 pounds (43.7 lbs. nominal water capacity).
- Valve Type: Must have a shut-off valve terminating in a Type 1 L.P. gas-cylinder-valve outlet. A Type 1 compatible cylinder with a Type 1 cylinder valve has a positive seating connection that does not permit gas flow until a positive seal has been obtained.
- Safety Features: Must include a collar to protect the cylinder valve and a safety-relief device for vapor withdrawal. Must also be equipped with a listed over-filling-prevention device.
- Filling Limit: Never fill the gas cylinder beyond 80 percent full.
- Fuel Regulator and Hose Assembly:
- Equipped with a Type 1 coupling nut. Not to be used with any other cylinder connection device.
- Thermal Element: Shuts off gas flow between 240°F and 300°F.
- Flow-Limiting Device: Limits gas flow to 10 cubic feet per hour when activated.
- Outlet Pressure: Factory set at 11 inches water column (0.4 lb. per sq. inch). Adjustment is dangerous and not recommended.
- Installation Requirements:
- Outdoor use only. Not to be operated in garages, breezeways, sheds, or any enclosed area.
- Minimum Clearance: At least 36 inches (92 cm) away from any combustible construction.
- Ventilation: Ventilation openings of the cylinder enclosure must be kept free and clear from debris.
- Electrical Accessories (Optional):
- Must conform to local codes or National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, or Canadian Electrical Code CSA 022.1.
- Grounding: Appliance must be electrically grounded with a three-prong grounding plug.
- Extension Cords: Must be grounding-type 3-wire cords, marked "W-A" and "Suitable for Use with Outdoor Appliances." Electrical rating must be at least as great as the appliance's rating.
Usage Features:
- Safe Location Selection: Emphasizes choosing a level, well-ventilated outdoor area away from children, pets, and combustible materials.
- L.P. Gas Cylinder Installation: Detailed instructions for connecting the L.P. cylinder to the grill, including ensuring proper seating of the Type 1 coupler and hand-tightening the coupling nut. For Yard Grills, the cylinder hangs from a hook and rests against a sway bar. For Pig Cookers, bottles are placed in base rings on the tongue and secured with a retaining bar.
- Leak Testing: A crucial safety procedure using a mild soapy-water solution to check all fuel-supply connections for leaks. This should be performed outdoors, away from ignition sources, and regularly.
- Lighting Instructions:
- Igniter Lighting: Steps include checking for burner blockage, ensuring the burner-control knob is OFF, opening the grill lid, turning on the fuel supply valve, pushing in and turning the burner-control knob to HIGH, and repeatedly pushing the igniter button.
- Match Lighting: If the igniter fails, a match-lighting hole is provided on the right side of the grill. Users are instructed to use a long wooden match through this hole while turning the burner control knob to HIGH.
- Flame Appearance: A good flame should be blue with some yellow tips (up to 1 inch) without carbon or soot deposits. Yellow flames may indicate clogged burner holes or tubes.
- Grill Operation:
- Preheating: Allow the grill to preheat with the lid closed for five minutes before cooking.
- Control Settings: High flame for quick searing, medium for steaks/chops/hamburgers, and low for roasts/rotisserie foods.
- Lid Vents: Sliding lid vents should be opened to a minimum cooking gap (1/2 inch) to ensure proper airflow and prevent flame extinguishment.
- Grease Flare-ups: Expected, but users should stand to the side when opening the lid and avoid positioning body parts directly over the cooking area.
- Shut-Off Procedure: Turn off burner-control knob(s), then turn off the top L.P. cylinder valve clockwise until it stops.
Maintenance Features:
- Regular Cleaning:
- Cooking Surface: Clean with a wire brush prior to every use.
- Thorough Cleaning: Recommended every few months. Involves removing the grate, scraping debris from the top baffle, and scooping collected debris from the bottom of the grill.
- Grease Collection: A small aluminum can should be hung beneath the grill bottom to catch grease drippings. The can and grill bottom become hot, so empty only when cool.
- Burner Tube Clearing: Spiders and insects can build nests in the burner tube, causing blockages and potential fires. Instructions include disconnecting the fuel source, detaching the control rod, unscrewing the valve from the burner, inspecting for nests, and using a long pipe cleaner to remove blockages.
- Orifice Cleaning: If the gas-control valve is blocked, unscrew the orifice, wash it in solvent, blow air through the small end hole, and replace it when dry.
- Hose Inspection: Regularly inspect the gas-supply hose for cuts, excessive abrasion, or wear. Replace if damaged.
- Cylinder Deterioration: Have a dealer check the cylinder for deterioration after 10 years, according to DOT regulations. Replace immediately if found.
- Vent Hole Maintenance: Keep the small vent hole in the regulator clean of dirt and debris.
- Exterior Refinishing: Clean, lightly sand, and paint with high-temperature paint.
- Storage: Store the L.P. gas-supply cylinder outdoors in a cool area, out of direct sunlight, and away from people or pets. Portable grills can be stored indoors without the cylinder. Place a dust cap on the cylinder valve outlet when not in use.
