Express Installation Guidelines
LUBRICATION – Do not apply oil or any other lubricant to the Gripple
fastener or any other part of the cable assembly.
JOINING – Never join two cable ends together in-line. Only pass the free
end of the cable in a continuous loop through both channels of the Gripple
fastener. The angle inside the Gripple formed loop must not exceed 60˚.
HANGING AT AN ANGLE TO VERTICAL – Ensure that the load
calculation considers the effect of ‘side load’. For example, at an angle
of 60˚ to vertical, the SWL is reduced by 50%. (See published technical
information on website or in Product Guide.)
DUCTING: When installing wraparound hangers on round/spiral ducting
or pipes, the final inclusive angle of the assembly should not exceed 60˚.
Y-FIT: Legs on Y-Fit hangers are not be installed at angles greater than
60˚.
Failure to comply with these recommendations may result in product malfunction and
possible damage to property or person and will invalidate the Gripple warranty. Gripple
products are warranted to conform to the manufacturer’s published specifications at
the time of shipment and to be free from defects in materials and workmanship. No
other warranty, whether express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability
or fitness for purpose, shall exist in connection with the
sale or use of any Gripple product.

Overview

The Gripple Express is a versatile suspension system designed for hanging various services in a static, non-moving environment. It is crucial to always use the product within its stated Safe Working Load (SWL) to ensure safety and prevent malfunction. The system is not intended for lifting applications, such as with cranes or pulleys, or for supporting services that exhibit movement or dynamic behavior.

Function Description:

The Gripple Express system facilitates the suspension of services through a variety of end-fixing methods, including:

  • Loop: Designed for choking around bar joists, beams, and roof trusses. This method involves passing the cable around the structural element and back through the Gripple Express fastener, forming a secure loop.
  • Stud: Used for anchoring into concrete ceilings, metal decking, or brackets. This involves a threaded stud that is secured into the structure, with the Gripple Express fastener attaching to the stud.
  • Toggle/Y-Toggle: For inserting into pre-drilled holes of light fixtures or metal decking. This method utilizes a toggle mechanism that expands behind the surface to create a secure anchor point.
  • Hook/Y-Hook: For snapping onto light fixtures, beam & purlin clips, or cable baskets & trays. This provides a quick and easy attachment method for various fixtures.
  • Eyelet: For bolting to fixtures or services, wood beams, or brackets. The eyelet provides a secure point for a bolt to pass through, attaching the Gripple Express to the desired surface.
  • 90° Eyelet: Specifically designed for shot firing into concrete or steel, it can also be used with mechanical anchors. This offers a robust attachment for heavy-duty applications.
  • Barrel: For attaching to a 1/4" male thread product. This allows for integration with other threaded components.
  • V-Bracket Accessory: A front or side mount light fixture clip for fluorescent light fixtures, providing a dedicated solution for these common lighting types.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Gripple Express system comes in two main sizes with distinct Safe Working Loads:

  • No. 1: Maximum Load of 33 lbs.
  • No. 2: Maximum Load of 100 lbs.

For specific end-fixing methods, the load capacities are further detailed:

  • UL File No. E228153 (Luminare Fittings):

    • No. 1: Up to 25 lbs for Loop, Stud*, Toggle, and Y-Fit.
    • No. 2: 26-100 lbs for Loop, Stud*, Toggle, and Y-Fit.
    • *Note: The suitability of the Stud end fixing for use in concrete was not part of UL investigation.
    • Y-Fit Hanger is not part of CSA approval.
  • UL File No. E251132 (Conduit and Cable Hardware):*

    • No. 2: 26-100 lbs for Loop.
    • *EMT Conduit up to 6" diameter.
    • Suitable for use in Air Handling Spaces in accordance with Section 300.22 (C) and (D) of the National Electrical Code, and rules 12-010 (3), (4), and (5), and 12-020 of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Process:
    1. Thread the cable into either the No. 1 or No. 2 Gripple Express fastener.
    2. Pull the cable through the fastener.
    3. Loop the cable around the ceiling or service attachment point and pass the tail end of the cable through the other hole of the Gripple Express.
  • Adjustment (Release):
    1. Ensure the load is fully supported before making adjustments.
    2. To release, press the button on the top (for Gripple Express No. 2) or slide the button on the side (for Gripple Express No. 1). This action releases the fastener from the cable, allowing for height adjustment of the service.
  • Cable Compatibility: Always use Gripple-supplied and specified cable. Never use on coated cable or other types of cable. Any damaged filaments on the cable should be trimmed with Gripple wire cutters before use.
  • Angle Considerations:
    • The angle inside the Gripple formed loop must not exceed 60°.
    • When hanging at an angle to vertical, the load calculation must account for 'side load'. For instance, at a 60° angle to vertical, the SWL is reduced by 50%. Refer to published technical information for detailed guidance.
    • For wraparound hangers on round/spiral ducting or pipes, the final inclusive angle of the assembly should not exceed 60°.
    • Legs on Y-Fit hangers must not be installed at angles greater than 60°.

Maintenance Features:

  • No Lubrication: Do not apply oil or any other lubricant to the Gripple fastener or any part of the cable assembly. Lubricants can compromise the fastener's grip and performance.
  • No Painting: Do not paint the Gripple Express fastener. Ensure the fastener is in its final position before applying any paint to the cable assembly. Moving the Gripple fastener after painting is also prohibited. Painting can interfere with the mechanism and potentially reduce its effectiveness.
  • No In-line Joining: Never join two cable ends together in-line. The cable should always pass through both channels of the Gripple fastener in a continuous loop.
  • Environmental Suitability:
    • Gripple products, including Stainless Steel versions, are NOT suitable for use in chlorinated or swimming pool environments due to potential corrosion.
    • Standard or Express Gripple hangers are designed for use in DRY LOCATIONS ONLY.
    • Stainless Steel Gripple hangers are SUITABLE FOR DAMP LOCATIONS.

Safety and Warranty:

  • Installation Safety: Do not walk or stand on the Gripple product installation.
  • Warranty: Failure to comply with the manufacturer's recommendations may result in product malfunction, potential damage to property or persons, and will invalidate the Gripple warranty. Gripple products are warranted to conform to published specifications at the time of shipment and to be free from defects in materials and workmanship. No other warranty, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability or fitness for purpose, shall exist in connection with the sale or use of any Gripple product.
