Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden and unexpected
death of a baby for no obvious reason and although we don’t yet know
how to completely prevent SIDS, it is possible to signicantly lower the
chances of it happening by following the advice.
Advice for parents to reduce the risk of SIDs
Things you can do...

9 Use a rm, at, waterproof mattress in good condition.
Things to avoid...
8 Never sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby.

Overview

The device described is the Groegg² (Groegg2), a unique color-changing room thermometer and nightlight, designed to help parents create a safer sleeping environment for babies by monitoring room temperature. It is manufactured and distributed worldwide by The Gro Company.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Groegg² is to display the room temperature in Celsius (°C) and indicate whether the temperature is within recommended guidelines for safe infant sleep. It achieves this by changing its color based on the temperature:

  • Blue: Indicates the room is too cold (16°C and below / Under 61°F).
  • Yellow: Indicates the room temperature is recommended (16-20°C / 61-68°F). This is the ideal range for reducing the risk of cot death, as advised by health professionals.
  • Orange: Indicates the room is warm (20-24°C / 68-75°F).
  • Red: Indicates the room is too warm (24°C and above / Over 75°F).

In addition to temperature monitoring, the Groegg² also functions as a nightlight, offering four adjustable brightness levels, including off. This feature allows parents to customize the lighting in the baby's room. The device is designed to be used in conjunction with advice from The Lullaby Trust, a UK charity focused on safer sleep for babies and reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Primary voltage of PSU: 220-240V
  • Voltage required: 5V
  • Current Consumption: 500mA
  • Operating temperature range: 0-60 degrees Celsius
  • Accuracy of temperature range: +/- 1°C
  • Patents: Worldwide Patents Granted
  • Model Number: EGG2M EN 001

Usage Features:

  • Getting Started:
    1. Remove all protective packaging.
    2. Insert one end of the power lead into the circular socket of the Groegg² and the other end into any UK plug socket.
    3. Switch on the charger. The Groegg² powers on automatically and requires a few minutes for accurate readings to stabilize after power-up.
  • Placement Guidelines:
    • Do not place the thermometer over or very close to a radiator, in direct sunlight, or by an open window.
    • Ensure the thermometer is placed out of reach of the baby's cot, and the power lead cannot be reached or pulled by a toddler.
    • The Groegg² displays the room temperature, not the baby's temperature. Parents are advised to regularly check their baby to ensure they are not too hot or cold.
  • Brightness Adjustment: The brightness of the nightlight can be adjusted by pressing the button on the bottom of the device until the desired level is achieved. There are four night-light levels, including off.
  • Switching Off: To switch off the Groegg², turn off the power at the wall socket. It is recommended to leave the Groegg² on at all times for continuous monitoring.
  • Responding to Temperature Readings:
    • If the room temperature is outside the recommended yellow range, three actions can be taken:
      1. Cool or heat the room: This can involve opening or closing a window/door or using a thermostatically controlled heater/radiator.
      2. Adjust the bedding: Increase or reduce the amount of bedding. For users of Grobag Baby Sleep Bags, this means choosing a different tog rating (0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, or 3.5 tog). For traditional sheets and blankets, add or remove layers.
      3. Adjust the baby's clothing: Reduce or increase the number of layers of clothing the baby is wearing.
    • Specific advice for warm weather (red indication): Reduce room temperature, bedding, and clothing. If the temperature cannot be lowered, remove all bedding and clothing, leaving the baby in just a nappy/diaper. A fan can be used to circulate air (ensuring it's not near the baby or pointing directly at them). Give the baby extra drinks. In extremely warm temperatures, sponge the baby down with lukewarm water.
    • Specific advice for cold weather (blue indication): Increase room temperature, bedding, and clothing. A thermostatically controlled heater in the baby's room is recommended (ensuring it's out of reach). Increase clothing levels, but always keep the baby's head uncovered. If the baby is cold, offer a warming cuddle or warm drink before returning them to their cot/crib with extra clothing/bedding.
  • Troubleshooting Temperature Readings: If the Groegg² doesn't read the expected temperature, it's important to remember that it indicates the temperature of the surrounding air, so drafts and adjacent heating sources can affect the reading.

Maintenance Features:

  • Electronic Stabilization: The Groegg² contains sensitive electronics that require stabilization after power-up to achieve accurate temperature readings. It is advised to avoid switching the power on and off repeatedly.
  • Malfunction Reset: If the unit malfunctions, remove the power and allow the unit to stand for 5 minutes before re-applying power.

The device is designed to be a helpful tool in promoting safer sleep practices, always emphasizing that parents should regularly check their baby and consult health professionals if in doubt.
