Overview

The K-BUS KNX Universal Dimming Actuator, available in 1, 2, or 4-fold configurations (ADUD-01/02.3, ADUD-02/02.3, ADUD-04/02.3), is a KNX device designed for controlling lighting.

Function Description:

The dimming actuator supports various dimming functions, including:

  • Switching: On/off control for connected loads.
  • Relative/Absolute Dimming: Adjusting brightness levels.
  • Status Feedback: Provides feedback on switch status, brightness, and abnormal conditions such as short-circuit, over-voltage, over-temperature, and operating voltage failure.
  • Reset Behavior: Defines how the device behaves after a download, bus failure, or bus recovery.
  • Dimming Curves: Offers 6 predefined dimming curves (Linear, Exponential, Cubic, Quadratic, Logarithmic, Root) and a user-defined curve for customized dimming characteristics.
  • Phase Cut Dimming: Supports both leading edge and trailing edge phase cut dimming.
  • Manual Operation: Allows for local manual control and provides output indication.
  • Central Control: For 2-fold and 4-fold dimmers, it enables central control of all channels. This feature is not available for the 1-fold dimmer.
  • Individual or Parallel Output: Channels can be configured for individual control or parallel operation to expand load capacity (only for 2-fold and 4-fold).
  • Extension Functions: Includes Staircase lighting, Flashing switch, Delay switch, Scene control, Threshold functions, Forced operation, Safety operation, and Operation hours counter.
  • Logic Function: Supports up to 8 channels of logic, each with up to 8 inputs and 1 logic result. Logic functions include AND, OR, XOR, Gate forwarding, Threshold comparator, Format convert, Gate function, Delay function, and Staircase lighting.
  • KNX Data Secure: The device complies with the KNX secure standard, allowing it to run in data secure mode to protect user data against unauthorized access and manipulation.

Usage Features:

  • Dimming Operation Modes: The dimmer supports both leading edge and trailing edge dimming.
    • Leading Edge: Turns off the dimmer in the leading edge and turns on in the trailing edge. No voltage input from zero point until the dimmer is turned on. Suitable for inductive loads.
    • Trailing Edge: Turns on the dimmer at the zero-crossing point and turns off in the trailing edge. This minimizes inrush current, has no minimum load requirement, allows for better performance with single or very small loads, extends lamp life, and reduces power grid interference. Suitable for resistive or capacitive loads.
  • KNX Secure Commissioning:
    • Requires assigning a project password when importing a KNX Secure device into ETS.
    • A commissioning key (FDSK) is required for the first download and is found on a sticker on the device. It can be entered manually or scanned via QR code.
    • If the device is replaced, the FDSK must be reset to factory settings, then the device re-assigned and re-commissioned.
  • General Settings:
    • Operation and Send delay after bus recovery: Sets the delay time for sending to the bus after device bus recovery (0-15s).
    • Send cycle of "In operation" telegram: Sets the time interval for cyclically sending "In operation" telegrams (0-240s, 0=inactive).
    • Manual operation: Enables manual control for debugging and checking lamps.
    • Manual to automatic by: Configures behavior when exiting manual operation (Only long press, Both long press and automatic delay time).
    • Delay time: Sets the delay time for exiting manual operation (10-6000s).
    • Safety function: Configures the behavior for safety status cancellation (Cancel via object value "0" or "1").
    • Monitoring period: Sets the period for monitoring the telegram of a safety object (0-1000s, 0=monitoring deactive).
    • Logic function: Enables the logic function interface.
  • Output Settings:
    • Device type: Displays the product type (1-Fold, 2-Fold, 4-Fold).
    • Dimming channels: For 2-Fold and 4-Fold dimmers, allows configuration of individual or parallel channels to expand load capacity.
  • Channel Settings:
    • Description: Sets a name for the channel (max 30 characters).
    • Load type: Configures the load type (Resistive&Capacitive, Inductive, LED) and dimming edge (trailing or leading).
    • Dimming curve: Selects one of the predefined or user-defined dimming curves.
    • General dimming time: Sets the time for the entire dimming process from minimum to maximum value (2-255s).
    • Minimum/Maximum brightness value: Sets the adjustable brightness range (1-100%).
    • Switching on value: Sets the brightness value when switching on (Preset brightness value, Last brightness value).
    • Dimming mode selection for switching on/off: Configures dimming behavior (Jumping, Dimming).
    • Dimming time for relative/absolute dimming: Sets the duration for relative or absolute dimming (4s).
    • Allow switch off via relative dimming: Enables switching off via relative dimming.
    • Absolute dimming value lower than the minimum value: Configures behavior when absolute dimming value is below minimum (0%=0%, otherwise=Minimum brightness value).
    • Additional startup characteristic when the lamp is off:
      • Startup brightness value: Sets the brightness value for startup (50%).
      • Behavior for dimming up: Defines how dimming up behaves (Dim up based on the startup brightness).
      • Behavior when the switch or dimming value is lower than startup value: Defines behavior when target brightness is lower than startup value (Jump to startup brightness).
    • Reset behavior: Configures behavior after download, bus failure, or bus recovery (Switching off, Preset brightness value, Brightness before bus failure, No reaction).
    • Short-circuit detect for operating supply or device reset if output is off: Enables short-circuit detection.
  • Central Control:
    • Enables central control for switching, relative dimming, and absolute dimming (only for 2/4-Fold Dimmers).
  • Status Feedback:
    • Configures feedback for switching, brightness value, short-circuit, over-voltage, over-temperature, and operating voltage failure (Respond after read only, Respond after change).
  • Extension Functions:
    • Scene function: Enables scene control.
    • Time function: Enables time-based functions (Delay switch, Flashing switch, Staircase lighting).
    • Threshold function: Enables threshold-based control.
    • Forced function: Enables forced operation.

    • Staircase lighting: Sets duration time (10-6500s), prewarning, warning time, and dimming down value.
  • Threshold Function Details:
    • Threshold value datatype: Selects datatype for threshold (1byte unsigned, 1byte percentage, Temperature, Illuminance).
    • Threshold value 1 & 2: Sets threshold values based on datatype.
    • Threshold behavior: Configures behavior (Without hysteresis, With hysteresis).
    • Output type: Sets output action (Switching, Brightness value).
  • Forced Function Details:
    • Forced operation datatype: 1bit or 2bit.
    • Forced operation at object value: Sets object value for activating/canceling forced operation (0=Forced/1=Cancel, 1=Forced/0=Cancel).
    • Behavior at forced operation: Configures behavior (Switching off, Preset brightness value, Unchange).
  • Safety Function Details:
    • Behavior at safety operation: Configures behavior (Switching off, Preset brightness value, Unchange).
    • Behavior at end of safety operation: Configures behavior after safety operation ends.
  • Operating Hours Counter Details:
    • Operating hours counter: Activates and sets datatype (Inactive, Value in s, Value in h).
    • Send counter value: Sets cycle for sending counter value (60-65535s or 1-255h).
    • Monitoring operation hours: Enables monitoring with a threshold for lamp life (100-2147483647s or 1-65535h).
  • Logic Function Details:
    • Function of channel: Selects logic function (AND, OR, XOR, Gate forwarding, Threshold comparator, Format convert, Gate function, Delay function, Staircase lighting).
    • Input a/b/c/d/e/f/g/h: Configures inputs (Disconnected, Normal, Inverted).
    • Result is inverted: Inverts the logic calculation result (No, Yes).
    • Read input object value after bus voltage recovery: Reads input value after device recovery (No, Yes).
    • Output send when: Sets conditions for sending output (Receiving a new telegram, Every change of output object).
    • Send delay time: Sets delay for sending logic result (None, 0.1s, 1s, 10s, 25s, Factor 1-255).

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting Table: Provides solutions for common issues like lamp flickering, differences in LED brightness, flicker/unstable LED startup, min. control value higher than lamp on value, lamp not supporting dimming, incompatible lamp/driver, incompatible load type, dimmable range not 0-100%, lamp still bright at lowest brightness, flicker/unstable dimmable range, abnormal switch off/on, and LED not turning off.
  • Short-circuit, Over-voltage, Over-temperature, and Operating Voltage Failure Protection: The device includes hardware protection mechanisms.
    • Short-circuit: Disconnects output, waits 1 minute, then attempts to output current control value. If still short-circuited, output is permanently disconnected until device restart.
    • Over-voltage: Disconnects output.
    • Over-temperature: If internal temperature exceeds 90°C for 10s, brightness dims to 20% or minimum. Returns to normal operation when temperature drops below 70°C and a new control telegram is received.
    • Operating Voltage Failure: If no valid over-zero signal is detected, control status and drive signals are not sent. Requires normal power supply to resume.
  • Factory Reset: Press and hold the programming button for 4 seconds, release, and repeat 4 times within 3 seconds to reset to factory configuration.
  • KNX Secure: Ensures data integrity and prevents unauthorized access, which is crucial for maintaining system security.
