Overview

This document serves as an installation and user manual for the Häfele Standard Hood, specifically models 495.38.283 (KAELYN) and 538.86.051 (KAELYN). It provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and correct operation, installation, and maintenance of the appliance.

Function Description

The Häfele Standard Hood is designed for domestic use to ventilate kitchen spaces by extracting smoke, steam, and odors produced during cooking. It is not intended for commercial purposes such as barbecues or roast shops. The hood helps maintain a clean and fresh kitchen environment by filtering and expelling air. It offers both outdoor exhausting and recycling modes, allowing flexibility based on installation requirements and preferences.

The hood features a push-button control panel for ease of use. These buttons allow users to control the fan speed and lighting. The fan has multiple speed settings to accommodate different cooking intensities, from simmering to high-density smoke production. The integrated light illuminates the cooking area, enhancing visibility while preparing food.

Usage Features

Installation: The manual outlines two primary methods for installing the hood:

  1. Wall Mounting (Way 1): This method involves drilling two Ø8mm holes into the wall at a suitable location, aligning with the holes at the back of the cooker hood. Nuts are inserted into these holes, and screws are tightened to secure the hood. Additionally, two safety screws are used to fix the hood through 6mm diameter safety vents located on the back casing. A one-way valve is then placed onto the cooker hood.
  2. Under-Cupboard Mounting (Way 2): For this method, four 6mm diameter holes are drilled at the bottom of a hanging cupboard. The one-way valve is placed on the cooker hood, which is then installed onto the cupboard bottom and secured with four enclosed screws.

Ventilation Methods: The hood supports two ventilation methods:

  1. Vertical Ventilation (Pic A): In this configuration, the round cover on the top of the hood must be removed using a tool. Air is then vented from the top horizontally.
  2. Horizontal Ventilation (Pic B): For this method, the round cover at the back of the hood needs to be removed. Air is then vented from the back.

Air Ventilation Setting:

  • Outdoor Exhausting: To vent air outside, the adjuster should be turned to the outdoor position. An outlet is then installed, and when the cooker hood is turned on, air is expelled through this outside outlet.
  • Recycling Mode (with Carbon Filter): For recycling air indoors, the adjuster is set to the indoor position. An outlet cover is installed, and with the cooker hood on, air is vented back into the room through an internal outlet after passing through a carbon filter. This mode is particularly useful when external venting is not feasible.

Control Panel (Push Buttons): The hood is operated via a simple push-button interface:

  • "0" (Off button): This button is used to turn off the fan.
  • "1" (Low Speed button): Activates low-speed ventilation, suitable for simmering and cooking that produces minimal steam.
  • "2" (Medium Speed button): Sets the airflow speed for standard cooking operations, providing effective ventilation.
  • "3" (High Speed button): Engages high-speed ventilation, ideal for situations with high-density smoke or steam, ensuring maximum extraction efficiency.
  • Light button: Controls the integrated light, turning it on or off to illuminate the cooking surface.

Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes several critical safety precautions:

  • Children should never operate the machine.
  • The cooker hood is exclusively for home use.
  • Regular cleaning of the hood and its filters is essential to maintain good working condition and prevent fire hazards. Failure to clean the unit according to instructions poses a fire risk.
  • Adequate room ventilation should be ensured when the appliance is connected.
  • The power supply cord must be checked for damage; any damaged cord must be replaced by qualified service personnel.
  • Sufficient room ventilation is required when the range hood is used simultaneously with other gas or fuel-burning appliances. Air must not be discharged into a flue used for exhausting fumes from other fuel-burning appliances.
  • Regulations regarding air discharge must be adhered to.
  • Flaming directly under the range hood is prohibited.
  • Children aged 8 years and above, and individuals with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities or lack of experience, can use the appliance if supervised or instructed on safe use and understanding of hazards. Children should not play with the appliance, and cleaning/user maintenance should not be performed by children without supervision.
  • If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or similarly qualified persons to avoid hazards.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity, efficiency, and safety of the Häfele Standard Hood. Before any cleaning, the hood must be switched off, and the plug pulled out from the power supply.

I. Regular Cleaning:

  • The exterior of the hood should be cleaned using a soft cloth moistened with hand-warm, mildly soapy water or a household cleaning detergent.
  • Abrasive materials, metal pads, harsh chemicals, or stiff brushes must never be used, as they can damage the hood's surface.

II. Monthly Cleaning for Grease Filter:

  • Cleaning the grease filter every month is essential to prevent fire risks.
  • The filter collects grease, smoke, and dust, directly impacting the hood's efficiency. If left uncleaned, accumulated grease can become saturated and potentially flammable.
  • The grease filter should be cleaned with a household cleaning detergent.

III. Annual Cleaning for Activated Carbon Filter:

  • This maintenance applies solely to hoods installed in recirculation mode (not vented to the outside).
  • The activated carbon filter traps odors and must be replaced at least once a year. The frequency of replacement may vary depending on how often the hood is used.
  • Important Note: The carbon filter is typically mounted on the back of the grill and should be changed every 3 months for optimal performance.
  • Warning: Charcoal filters cannot be washed or recycled. They must be replaced after a maximum of 120 hours of use and should not be exposed to heat.

Troubleshooting: The manual includes a troubleshooting guide to help users identify and resolve common issues:

  • Light on, but fan does not work:
    • Cause: Jammed fan blade or damaged motor.
    • Solution: Switch off the unit and have it repaired by qualified service personnel.
  • Both light and fan do not work:
    • Cause: Light bulb burn or loose power cord.
    • Solution: Replace the bulb with the correct rating or plug the power supply back in.
  • Serious Vibration of the unit:
    • Cause: Damaged fan blade, fan motor not fixed tightly, or unit not hung properly on the bracket.
    • Solution: Switch off and repair by qualified service personnel (for fan blade/motor issues) or take down the unit and check bracket location (for hanging issues).
  • Suction performance not good:
    • Cause: Too long a distance between the unit and the cooking plane.
    • Solution: Readjust the distance to 65-75cm.

Environmental Protection: The manual advises that waste electrical products should not be disposed of with household waste. Users are encouraged to recycle where facilities exist and to check with their Local Authority or retailer for recycling advice. This promotes responsible disposal and environmental protection.
