Description
Haldex hydraulic power units are designed specifically to
operate on AC electric power. Each power unit is a custom
selected assembly consisting of a high performance
hydraulic pump, reservoir, motor, manifold interface block,
relief valve, pressure gauge and oil level sight gauge with
thermometer. They are controlled with NFPA D03 (D01)
directional control valves. Manifold and valve sold sepa-
rately. The power units can be coupled via suitable
hydraulic lines to a wide range of operating mechanisms.
They normally operate hydraulic cylinders, but can be used
with any other hydraulic actuating device.

Overview

This document describes the Haldex 1-5 HP AC Hydraulic Power Units, specifically models 10591, 10592, and 10593, as outlined in BARNES OIPM P/N 2690161. It serves as an operating instructions and parts manual, emphasizing safety precautions throughout.

Function Description:

Haldex hydraulic power units are designed for operation with AC electric power. Each unit is a custom-selected assembly comprising a high-performance hydraulic pump, a reservoir, a motor, a manifold interface block, a relief valve, a pressure gauge, and an oil level sight gauge with a thermometer. These units are controlled by NFPA D03 (D01) directional control valves (manifold and valves sold separately). They are intended to be coupled via suitable hydraulic lines to a wide range of operating mechanisms, typically hydraulic cylinders, but can also be used with other hydraulic actuating devices. The units are shipped fully assembled and tested.

Important Technical Specifications:

The units are equipped with totally enclosed fan-cooled motors with continuous horsepower ratings. They feature an adjustable relief valve, factory preset, and reservoirs plumbed for vertical mounting. Reservoir options include 5 and 15-gallon rectangular designs. A 100-mesh inlet strainer is included.

AC Hydraulic Power Unit Performance Table:

Stock No. Nominal GPM Operating PSI HP Phase Motor Volts 60 Hz RPM
10591 1 1/2 2000 2 1 115/230 1725
10592 2 1500 2 3 230/460 1725
10593 3.5 2000 5 3 230/460 1725

Physical Dimensions (Referencing Figure 2):

  • Overall length: Approximately 13.93 inches.
  • Base dimensions: Approximately 11.250 inches by 12.000 inches.
  • Conduit entrance: 0.875 inch diameter (3 locations).
  • Mounting holes: 0.438 inch diameter (4 locations).
  • Fill plug: 1/2-14 N.P.T.F.
  • Drain: 1/2-14 N.P.T.F.
  • SAE port: 9/16-18 SAE (plastic plugged).
  • Pressure gauge: 0-3000 PSI.
  • Breather: 40 micron, bayonet type filler.
  • Sight gauge with thermometer.

Usage Features:

  • Installation:
    • Select a clean, dry area with adequate ventilation, preferably near the electric power source.
    • Units require free air circulation for heat displacement, despite having totally enclosed fan-cooled motors.
    • Designed for vertical mounting with reservoir feet down and breather up. A flat mounting surface is required.
    • Avoid dusty conditions to prevent clogging of the reservoir breather.
    • Mounting in an inclined plane or other non-vertical positions will reduce usable oil, potentially causing foaming, erratic component movement, and pump failure.
    • Do not remove plastic shipping plugs until ready to install hoses and fittings to minimize contamination.
    • Ensure work area and hydraulic components are clean before installation.
    • Fill the reservoir with good quality automatic transmission fluid (ATF) using a clean funnel with a fine mesh wire screen.
    • Remove shipping plugs (2) 9/16-18 SAE #6 and install hoses/fittings.
    • Do not use Teflon tape on NPTF ports; the unit uses both SAE O-ring and NPTF type ports.
    • Avoid overtightening fittings.
  • Electrical Installation:
    • Ensure nameplate voltage is available at the motor during operation.
    • Choose a site that avoids long power cord runs to prevent voltage drop; larger wire diameter may be required for longer cords.
    • Follow all local electrical and safety codes, including NEC and OSHA.
    • For single-phase motors, use 3-wire cords with 3-prong grounding plugs.
    • For three-phase motors, use 4-wire cords with grounding type plugs.
    • Verify motor rotation is clockwise facing the fan end of the motor.
  • Operation:
    • Double-check all hydraulic and electrical connections.
    • Confirm the reservoir is filled with hydraulic fluid.
    • Ensure all equipment guards are in place and the work area is clear of personnel and loose items.
    • Start-Up: Jog the motor intermittently several times to prime the pump and fill hydraulic lines. This also helps ensure adequate lubrication.
    • After lines are filled, check and replenish reservoir oil level as needed.
    • Never run the pump dry, as this can cause severe pump damage.
    • Never exceed the maximum operating pressure.
    • Do not overtighten fittings, bolts, etc., to prevent damage.
    • Provide adequate cooling for hydraulic oil to prevent oil/component damage and hazards from excessive temperatures.

Maintenance Features:

  • Fluid Management:
    • Keep the reservoir filled with good quality automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
    • Use a clean funnel with a fine mesh wire screen for filling; do not use a cloth strainer.
    • Frequent inspection and change of hydraulic fluid if contaminated is crucial, as most pump/fluid motor failures, valve malfunctions, and short unit life are linked to dirt or foreign materials (water, chips, lint) in the system.
  • Inspection:
    • Regularly inspect hydraulic hoses and fittings for wear or leakage.
    • Keep the unit clear of dirt and foreign materials.
    • Keep electrical connections clean.

General Safety Information (Emphasized throughout the manual):

  • Read the manual carefully before assembly, installation, operation, or maintenance.
  • Observe all safety information to protect yourself and others.
  • Failure to comply with instructions can result in personal injury and/or property damage.
  • Retain instructions for future reference.
  • Follow all local electrical and safety codes, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Replace or repair damaged or worn power cords immediately.
  • Do not operate units without proper grounding.
  • Ensure nameplate voltage is available at the motor when operating under load; use adequate wiring to avoid voltage drop.
  • The use of 3-prong single-phase adapters is prohibited in Canada by the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Provide adequate cooling for hydraulic oil to prevent excessive temperatures, which can be hazardous and cause property damage or personal injury.
