HI702
Copper High Range
INSTRUCTION MANUAL
• It is important that the sample does not contain any debris.
Whenever the cuvette is placed into the measurement cell, it
must be dry outside, and completely free of fingerprints, oil and
dirt. Wipe it thoroughly with HI731318 or a lint-free cloth prior
to insertion.
Shaking the cuvette can generate bubbles, causing higher
readings. To obtain accurate measurements, remove such bubbles
by swirling or by gently tapping the cuvette.
Do not let the reacted sample stand for too long after reagent
is added, as accuracy will be affected.
After the reading it is important to immediately discard the
sample, otherwise the glass might become permanently stained.
Tips for an Accurate Measurement
To save the battery, the instrument shuts down after 10 minutes of non-use.
One fresh battery lasts for a minimum of 5000 measurements. When the battery is dead the
instrument will display “bAd” then ”bAt” for 1 second and then turns off.
To restart the instrument, the battery must be replaced with a new one.
To replace the instrument’s battery:
Turn the instrument off by holding the button until the meter shuts off.
Turn the instrument upside down and remove the battery cover with a screwdriver.
Remove the battery from its location and replace it with a new one, inserting the negative
end first.
Insert the battery cover and replace the screw with a screwdriver.

Overview

The Hanna HI702 Copper High Range Checker is a portable, handheld colorimeter designed for accurate measurement of copper concentration. This device utilizes an adaptation of the EPA approved method, where the reaction between copper and a bicinchoninate reagent produces a purple tint in the sample, which is then measured.

Functional Description

The HI702 Checker features a simple design for ease of use. It includes a cover, a cuvette with a cap, and a cuvette holder for sample placement. Measurements are displayed on an LCD Liquid Crystal Display. The device is operated via a single button.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Range: 0.00 to 5.00 ppm

  • Light Source: Light Emitting Diode @575 nm
  • Light Detector: Silicon Photocell
  • Method: Adaptation of the EPA approved method. The reaction between copper and the bicinchoninate reagent causes a purple tint in the sample.
  • Environment: 0 to 50 °C (32 to 122 °F); max 95% RH non-condensing
  • Battery Type: 1.5V AAA (1 pc.)
  • Auto-Shut off: After 10 minutes of non-use

Usage Features

Measurement Procedure:

  1. Power On: Turn the meter on by pressing the button. All segments will be displayed. The display will then show "Add", "C.1" with "Press" blinking, indicating the meter is ready for the first measurement.
  2. Zeroing: Fill a cuvette with 10 mL of unreacted sample and replace the cap. Place this cuvette into the meter and close the meter's cap. Press the button. The display will show "Add", "C.2" with "Press" blinking, indicating the meter is zeroed.
  3. Reagent Addition: Remove the cuvette from the meter and unscrew the cap. Add the content of one packet of HI702-0 reagent. Replace the cap and shake gently for about 15 seconds to ensure proper mixing. Place the cuvette back into the meter.
  4. Measurement: Press and hold the button until a timer is displayed on the LCD, showing a countdown prior to the measurement. Alternatively, wait for 45 seconds and then press the button.
  5. Result Display: The instrument will display the concentration of copper in ppm. The meter automatically turns off after 10 minutes of inactivity.

Tips for an Accurate Measurement:

  • Ensure the sample does not contain any debris.
  • The cuvette must be dry outside and free of fingerprints, oil, and dirt before insertion. Wipe it thoroughly with HI731318 or a lint-free cloth.
  • Avoid shaking the cuvette vigorously, as this can generate bubbles, leading to higher readings. Remove bubbles by swirling or gently tapping the cuvette.
  • Do not let the reacted sample stand for too long after reagent addition, as accuracy will be affected.
  • Immediately discard the sample after reading to prevent permanent staining of the glass.

Errors and Warnings:

  • Light High: Indicates too much light for a measurement. Check the preparation of the zero cuvette.
  • Light Low: Indicates insufficient light for a measurement. Check the preparation of the zero cuvette.
  • Inverted Cuvettes: The sample and the zero cuvette are inverted.
  • Under Range: A blinking "0.00" indicates the sample absorbs less light than the zero reference. Verify the procedure and ensure the same cuvette is used for both reference (zero) and measurement.
  • Over Range: A flashing value of the maximum concentration indicates the reading is over range. Dilute the sample and re-run the test.
  • Battery Low: The battery needs to be replaced soon.
  • Dead Battery: Indicates the battery is dead and must be replaced. Normal operation will be interrupted. Change the battery and restart the meter.

Maintenance Features

Battery Management:

  • The instrument automatically shuts down after 10 minutes of non-use to conserve battery life.
  • A fresh battery provides a minimum of 5000 measurements.
  • When the battery is dead, the instrument will display "bad" then "bat" for 1 second before turning off.
  • To replace the battery:
    1. Turn the instrument off by holding the button until the meter shuts off.
    2. Turn the instrument upside down and remove the battery cover with a screwdriver.
    3. Remove the old battery and replace it with a new 1.5V AAA battery, inserting the negative end first.
    4. Insert the battery cover and replace the screw with a screwdriver.
