Overview

This document describes the Hanna Instruments HI98129 and HI98130, which are compact, waterproof pH, EC/TDS, and temperature testers. These devices are designed for ease of use with a two-button operation system and are built to float if accidentally dropped in water.

Function Description

The HI98129 and HI98130 testers are multi-parameter instruments capable of measuring pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and temperature. They feature automatic temperature compensation (ATC) for all pH, EC, and TDS measurements, ensuring accuracy across varying temperatures. The testers measure temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. A key feature is the user-selectable EC/TDS conversion factor (CONV) and temperature compensation coefficient (β), allowing for customization based on specific application needs.

The devices incorporate a stability tag on the LCD, which disappears once the reading has stabilized, indicating when a reliable measurement can be taken. Battery level and a low-battery indicator are clearly displayed on the LCD, alerting the user to the need for battery replacement to prevent inaccurate readings. Furthermore, the Battery Error Prevention System (BEPS) automatically shuts off the tester if there isn't enough power to ensure an accurate measurement, safeguarding data integrity.

Both models come with a replaceable HI73127 pH electrode, which features a stainless steel round connector and an extendable cloth junction. This design simplifies electrode replacement by eliminating the need to align pins, which can often break. The integrated stainless steel temperature sensor facilitates faster and more accurate temperature measurements.

Usage Features

Turning the Tester ON / OFF: To turn the tester on, press and hold the ⏚/MODE button. All LCD segments will display for a few seconds, followed by the battery life percentage indicator. To turn the tester off from measurement mode, press the ⏚/MODE button. "OFF" will be displayed on the second LCD line before the tester powers down.

HOLD Mode: While in measurement mode, pressing and holding the SET/HOLD button will display "HOLD" on the screen. This freezes the current pH, EC/TDS, or temperature readings on the LCD. Pressing either button will resume normal measurement mode.

Setup Mode: The setup mode allows users to select the desired temperature unit and pH buffer set. To access this mode, select pH mode and then press ⏚/MODE until "TEMP" and the current temperature unit (e.g., "TEMP °C") are displayed. Users can then press SET/HOLD to cycle through temperature units. After selecting the temperature unit, pressing ⏚/MODE again allows selection of the pH buffer set (e.g., "pH7.01 BUFF" or "pH6.86 BUFF"). SET/HOLD changes the buffer set. To exit setup and return to measurement mode, press ⏚/MODE twice.

pH Calibration & Measurement: Frequent calibration is recommended, especially when high accuracy is required or when the pH electrode is replaced, at least monthly, or after testing aggressive samples. To enter calibration mode from measurement mode, press and hold ⏚/MODE until "CAL" is displayed. The tester will prompt for a buffer solution (e.g., "pH 7.01 USE"). The buffer value will appear on the first LCD line, and "REC" will be on the second line. If an invalid buffer is used, "USE" will display for 12 seconds, followed by "WRNG."

  • One-point calibration: For pH 4.01, 10.01, or 9.18 buffer solutions, the tester automatically accepts the calibration point once the reading stabilizes, displaying "OK 1" before returning to measurement mode. For pH 7.01 (or 6.86) buffer solutions, press ⏚/MODE after acceptance to display "pH 7.01" (or "pH 6.86") and "OK 1," then return to measurement mode.
  • Two-point calibration: After the first calibration point (pH 7.01 or 6.86) is accepted, the tester will prompt for a second buffer (e.g., "pH 4.01 USE"). If a valid buffer (pH 4.01, 10.01, or 9.18) is recognized, the calibration point is accepted, displaying "OK 2" before returning to measurement mode. If no valid buffer is recognized, "WRNG" will be displayed. Once calibration is complete, the "CAL" tag will illuminate.

Exiting Calibration & Resetting Default Values: While in calibration mode, pressing ⏚/MODE before the first calibration point is accepted will exit calibration, displaying "ESC" and returning to measurement mode with the last calibrated data. To clear a previous calibration and restore default values, press SET/HOLD before the first calibration point is accepted. The tester will display "CLR" on the second LCD line, the "CAL" tag will disappear, and the tester will revert to default calibration.

pH Measurement: To measure pH, use SET/HOLD to select pH mode. Place the electrode in the solution and stir gently. Wait for the stability tag to disappear before taking the reading. The pH value is displayed on the first LCD line, and temperature on the second. Ensure the tester is calibrated (indicated by the "CAL" tag) before measuring.

EC/TDS Calibration & Measurement:

  • Calibration Procedure: From measurement mode, press and hold ⏚/MODE until "CAL" is displayed on the second LCD line. Place the probe in the appropriate calibration solution (HI70031 for HI98129 or HI70030 for HI98130). The LCD will display "OK" for 1 second, and the tester will return to measurement mode. The "CAL" tag will indicate successful calibration.
  • Measurement: Use SET/HOLD to select either EC or TDS mode. Place the electrode in the solution and stir gently, using plastic beakers to minimize electromagnetic interference. Wait for the stability tag to disappear. The EC/TDS value will be displayed on the first LCD line, and temperature on the second. Ensure the tester is calibrated before taking measurements.

Changing EC/TDS Conversion Factor (CONV) & Temperature Compensation Coefficient β (BETA): From measurement mode, press and hold ⏚/MODE until "TEMP" and the current temperature unit are displayed. Press ⏚/MODE again to display the current conversion factor (e.g., "0.50 CONV"); use SET/HOLD to change it. Press ⏚/MODE once more to display the current temperature compensation coefficient β (e.g., "% 2.1 BETA"); use SET/HOLD to change it. Press ⏚/MODE to return to measurement mode.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Always use fresh buffer solution for each calibration to ensure accuracy.
  • A two-point calibration is recommended for improved accuracy.
  • Rinse the probe thoroughly with distilled or deionized water between successive measurements to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Clean the electrode monthly using a pH and EC cleaning solution. For general purpose cleaning, keep the electrode in HI7061 solution for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water.
  • When not in use, add a few drops of HI70300 Storage solution to the protective cap. Never store the probe in distilled or deionized water, as this can damage the electrode.

Electrode Replacement: The pH electrode is replaceable using the supplied HI73128 removal tool. Insert the tool into the probe cavity, rotate it counterclockwise, and then use the other side of the tool to pull out the old electrode. Insert a new pH electrode by reversing these steps.

Battery Replacement: The battery life percentage indicator is displayed upon power-on. If the battery level drops below 5%, a battery symbol will light up, indicating that replacement is needed soon. If the battery level is too low to guarantee accurate readings, the tester will automatically shut off. To replace batteries:

  1. Turn off the tester.
  2. Remove the four screws on the top of the tester to open the battery compartment.
  3. Remove the old batteries.
  4. Insert four new 1.5V AA batteries, paying attention to the correct polarity.
  5. Close the battery compartment with the four screws. Only use the battery type specified in the manual, and dispose of old batteries according to local regulations.
