OPERATING THE 7.0 WITH THE ON SCREEN MENU SYSTEM
This section describes the operation of the Citation 7.0 using the on screen menus and display system.
Introduction
Before the advent of digital technology, the only way to change a setting or make a selection in a piece of audio or
video equipment was to turn a switch or knob. The action of turning the control caused an immediate change as the
switch position changed, or the control changed an electrical value within the unit. The only way to tell how the change
was made was through in precise markings on the front panel or knob, or by connecting indicator lights to the switch
settings.
Early remote controls were nothing more than motorized versions of physical controls. Here, a motor did the work of
turning the knob or switch for you.
The availability of digital technology has radically changed the way consumer electronics devices are operated. The
availability of low cost computing hardware has made it possible to replace the individual switches that used to control
every function with simple switches that send commands to a processor. The processor, in turn, provides a control
signal that acts on the device or circuit under control.
A major advantage of this is that the control processor can also report it’s status, and the status of the device being
controlled to an external display. In the case of the Citation 7.0, this display is a two line alphanumeric, fluorescent unit
on the front panel, or video signals that become on screen menus when connected to a video monitor.
Citation 7.0 Menu and Display System
The Citation 7.0 A/V Controller uses a series of menus and on screen displays to make it easy to use and operate the
device. In some cases, the display shows a discrete function, in response to a button press on either the front panel or
the remote control. In other cases, the display shows a status screen that shows a summary of the settings for one of
the 7.0’s memories. If you wish to change one of the items on the menu, there are navigational controls to move
through the choices displayed on the screen.
Direct Function Controls
Direct function controls correspond to the knobs and switches on conventional audio products. When you press the
button, something happens. For example, an input or mode is selected, the volume is raised or lowered, or a mode or
condition is changed. In some cases a button press causes the change immediately, and a message will appear on
the display or screen to confirm the action. In other cases, such as the volume control, pressing the button brings up a
numeric reading on the front panel display, and an bar graph to the on screen display. Tapping the button or keeping it
pressed down causes the condition to change, with the display showing the results. In other cases, the button controls
a set of conditions with a few, fixed, choices. Tap the button once to bring the display on and show the current
condition. Tap it again to cycle through the choices that are available. Stop when you reach the desired condition.
Functions that are controlled directly are indicated by a “D” on the diagram of the remote control on page #xx.
