Overview

The Hungry Hungry Hippos game is a classic, fast-paced game designed for 2-4 players aged 4 and up, requiring adult assembly. The primary function of the game is to provide an entertaining and competitive experience where players race to make their hippo "chomp" the most marbles. It's a game of speed and quick reflexes, creating an exciting "feeding frenzy" atmosphere.

Function Description:

The core function of Hungry Hungry Hippos is to simulate a marble-eating contest among four hippos. Each player controls a hippo, and the objective is to rapidly press a lever or tail mechanism to make their hippo extend its neck and mouth to "eat" as many marbles as possible from the central game base. The game promotes hand-eye coordination, quick decision-making, and friendly competition.

Usage Features:

Initial Setup and Assembly:

Before the first game, some assembly is required. Players need to remove the hippo heads and marbles from their plastic and cardboard inserts. The hippo heads are then attached to their respective bodies by fitting tabs on the hippo's neck through holes on either side of the head. This initial assembly ensures the hippos are ready for action. The marble storage cover also needs to be removed from the box and kept handy for later use.

Getting Ready to Play:

  1. Removing Hippos from the Game Base: Each hippo is initially secured to the game base. To remove them, players gently squeeze the sides of the hippo and pull it out from the tabs that hold it in place.
  2. Attaching Hippos to the Game Base: Once removed, the game base is flipped over. Each hippo is then attached by sliding its front tabs into designated holes on the edges of the base. A firm press down locks the hippo securely in place, ensuring stability during gameplay.
  3. Filling Marble Release Areas: The game comes with multiple marble-release areas. Players fill each of these areas with the plastic marbles provided. A special golden marble is included, which can be placed in any release area for a bonus game.
  4. Waking Up Your Hippo: To prepare a hippo for play, a player holds down its tail and pulls its neck out and downward. Pressing and releasing the tail a few times ensures the hippo's chomping mechanism is active and ready.

Gameplay:

  1. Hippo Selection: Each player chooses one of the four distinct hippos: Veggie Potamus, Sweetie Potamus, Bottomless Potamus, or Hungry Hippo.
  2. Launching Marbles: To start the game, all marbles are launched into the central arena by pressing the black buttons located on the game base. This scatters the marbles, making them accessible to the hippos.
  3. Starting the Frenzy: The player whose birthday is next gets the honor of yelling "GO!" This signals the start of the game, and all players simultaneously begin to make their hippos chomp the marbles as fast as they can.
  4. Chomping Action: Players repeatedly press their hippo's tail or lever. This action causes the hippo's neck to extend, its mouth to open, and then retract, ideally scooping up any marbles in its path. The goal is to be as quick and efficient as possible to capture the most marbles.

Winning the Game:

The primary objective is to have the hippo that chomps the most marbles. Once all marbles have been eaten, players count the marbles collected by their hippo. The player with the highest marble count wins.

Bonus Game:

For an added challenge, the game includes a bonus round. In this variation, gameplay proceeds as usual, but the winner is determined by whoever's hippo manages to chomp the golden marble. This adds an extra layer of excitement and a specific target for players to aim for.

Maintenance Features:

Putting the Game Away:

Proper storage ensures the longevity of the game and keeps all components organized.

  1. Removing Hippos from the Game Base: To disassemble, players pinch the tabs located beneath the game base to release and remove each hippo.
  2. Storing Marbles: The marbles are collected and placed into the center storage tray on the underside of the game base. A dedicated storage cover then secures the marbles, preventing them from scattering or getting lost.
  3. Storing Hippos: Each hippo is placed into a specific underside corner of the game base. The tabs on the hippo are used to lock it in place, ensuring a compact and secure storage arrangement.
  4. Locking Hippo Necks: To further secure the hippos for storage, players press down on each hippo's tail and lift its neck up and onto the front tab on its body. This position keeps the hippo's chomping mechanism in a safe, retracted state, preventing damage.
  5. Compact Storage: Once all components are properly stored, the game base, with the hippos and marbles secured, forms a compact unit that fits neatly back into its original box.

Important Note for Replay:

When preparing to play again after storage, players must remember to remove the marble storage cover from the bottom of the game base and set it aside before launching the marbles. This ensures that the marbles are free to be released into the game arena.

The Hungry Hungry Hippos game is designed for repeated play, with its robust plastic components built to withstand the energetic nature of the game. The clear instructions for assembly, gameplay, and storage make it accessible for its target age group and ensure that the game can be enjoyed for many years. The game's design prioritizes ease of use and durability, making it a reliable choice for family fun.
