WinTV-HVR uses your PC or laptop’s CPU for displaying TV programs on your PC
screen. The decoding of high definition ATSC is very processor intensive, and the
smoothness of high definition TV programs depends upon how fast your PC or laptop
system is. Other PC activities that consume CPU resources might affect the display of
ATSC digital TV. Slow video, jerky video and momentary pausing of video are all results
of a CPU which is temporarily being used by other activities.
For the best ATSC digital TV reception, a roof top ‘Wideband’ or ‘High gain’ antenna
is recommended. In the U.S., a good ATSC digital antenna selector can be found at
TitanTV.com under Resources.
N
ote: The WinTV-HVR-1265 cannot receive digital satellite TV unless it is connected to a satel-
lite TV set top box.

remote control receiver cable) where is can be “seen” by
the remote control transmitter. This is normally at the front of
your PC.

ATSC digital TV is over-the-air digital TV for North America. ATSC digital TV
typically requires an antenna for reception, and is currently broadcast in 200 cities, with
over 1500 TV stations. ATSC digital TV is transmitted in several resolutions, from
“standard definition” up to high definition which has about 16 times the resolution of
normal cable TV. In any resolution, ATSC digital TV gives sharper pictures than analog
cable TV and near CD quality sound.
Clear QAM TV channels are digital cable TV channels which are broadcast “in
the clear”. These digital cable TV channels are broadcast in various resolutions, from
standard definition up to high definition.
WinTV-HVR-1265 has a built-in tuner for analog cable TV, digital ATSC and digital clear
QAM TV. To receive ATSC, you will need an antenna. To receive digital clear QAM or
analog cable TV, you will need a cable TV connection.

Overview

This document describes the WinTV-HVR-1265, a device designed to bring television viewing and recording capabilities to your personal computer. It supports both analog and digital television signals, allowing users to watch live TV, pause, rewind, and record their favorite programs directly on their PC. The device is compatible with various Windows operating systems and offers a range of features to enhance the TV viewing experience.

Function Description

The WinTV-HVR-1265 serves as a TV tuner for your computer, enabling it to receive and process television signals. It supports both analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC/QAM) broadcast standards, making it versatile for different regions and signal types. The device allows you to watch live television in a window on your PC screen, or in full-screen mode. Beyond live viewing, it provides DVR-like functionalities, including the ability to pause, rewind, and record TV programs. For digital TV, it captures the signal in its original quality, including high-definition broadcasts, closed captions, parental control information, and SAP audio. For analog cable TV, it utilizes a built-in hardware MPEG-2 encoder to record video at a configurable quality level. The device also supports external audio/video inputs, allowing you to connect other sources like cable TV boxes or satellite set-top boxes to your PC. Some models of the WinTV-HVR-1265 also include FM radio reception capabilities, expanding its multimedia functions.

Usage Features

Installation and Setup:

The installation process involves inserting the WinTV-HVR-1265 PCI-E board into an available slot on your motherboard. Once the hardware is installed, you proceed with software installation using the provided CD-ROM. The software guides you through driver installation and initial setup. During the setup wizard, you'll configure your country, select the type of TV signal (analog, digital, or both), and initiate a channel scan. The channel scan automatically detects available TV channels, which can take several minutes. For digital signals, the wizard also scans for QAM digital cable TV channels if you have a cable TV connection. If you need to connect external audio/video sources, the setup wizard allows you to configure composite and S-Video inputs.

Watching Live TV:

After installation, you can launch the WinTV v7 application to watch live TV. The application displays TV in a resizable window or full-screen mode. You can access a channel list to browse and select channels. The channel list can be displayed permanently or accessed via the Options menu. For digital TV, the application supports closed captions, which can be toggled on or off.

DVR-like Functionality (Time-Shifting):

The WinTV-HVR-1265 continuously records the live TV stream to your PC's hard drive while you're watching. This enables time-shifting features:

  • Pause: Click the "Pause" button to temporarily stop live TV. The time counter will start counting, indicating how long you've paused.
  • Play: Click the "Play" button to resume watching from where you paused.
  • Rewind: Use the "Skip back" buttons to rewind the video by specific increments (e.g., 1 minute, 10 seconds) or to the beginning of the recorded buffer.
  • Fast Forward: Use the "Skip ahead" buttons to fast forward the video by specific increments (e.g., 1 minute, 30 seconds).
  • Delay Counter: A delay counter indicates how far behind live TV you are, allowing you to easily track your position in the time-shifted buffer.

Recording TV Programs:

The device allows you to record TV programs to your PC's hard drive.

  • Instant Recording: While watching a program, click the "Record" button to start recording. A file name will briefly appear on the screen. Click "Stop" to end the recording.
  • Scheduled Recording (TV Scheduler): The built-in TV Scheduler allows you to program future recordings. You can access the scheduler from the WinTV v7 Options menu. For each event, you specify:
    • Name: A custom name for the recording.
    • Channel: The desired TV channel.
    • Start Time: The exact time the recording should begin.
    • Duration: The length of the recording in minutes.
    • Recurrence: Options include "Record Once," "Record Daily," or "Record Weekly" (with specific days of the week for weekly recordings).
    • Start Date: The date the recording schedule begins. The WinTV application does not need to be running for scheduled recordings to work; it will "wake up" the application at the scheduled time.

Playback of Recorded Files:

Recorded programs are saved in the "MyVideos" directory by default, though this can be changed in the settings. Files are named using a format that includes channel number, channel name, date, and time. To play a recorded file, click the "Playback File" button and select the desired video from the list.

External Inputs:

The WinTV-HVR-1265 supports external audio/video inputs, such as Composite and S-Video. This allows you to connect and view content from other devices like VCRs, DVD players, or game consoles through your PC. The setup wizard guides you through configuring these inputs, including selecting the appropriate video format if necessary.

FM Radio (for compatible models):

If your WinTV-HVR-1265 model supports FM radio, you can scan for FM stations during the initial setup. Once scanned, you can switch to FM radio mode within the WinTV v7 application using the source selector.

Configuration and Settings:

The WinTV v7 application includes a comprehensive "Configuration" menu (accessed via a gear icon) with various tabs:

  • General: Allows you to select the video renderer for optimal display.
  • Folders: Configure the default directory for recorded TV programs.
  • Devices: Manage your WinTV tuner, re-scan for channels, and set up TV sources.
  • All Channels: View and manage all scanned channels.
  • Favorites: Create a list of your favorite channels for quick access.
  • Parental Control: Set parental control levels to restrict access to certain programs.
  • Advanced Options: Configure advanced settings, such as converting TV recordings to MPG file type or enabling game mode.

Maintenance Features

Driver and Software Updates:

The manual emphasizes the importance of keeping your drivers and software up to date. Hauppauge provides updates on its website, which can include bug fixes, performance improvements, and new features. Regularly checking for and installing these updates ensures optimal performance and compatibility with new operating systems or broadcast standards. The software includes a feature to check for the latest available updates directly from the Hauppauge website.

Channel Rescanning:

If you experience issues with missing channels, or if new channels become available in your area, you can easily rescan for TV channels through the WinTV v7 Configuration menu. This process re-detects all available analog and digital signals, ensuring your channel list is current.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides guidance on common issues, such as ensuring the correct country is selected during setup for proper channel scanning. It also implicitly suggests that if you encounter problems, verifying your device settings, such as the video format for external inputs, can resolve many issues. The ability to re-scan channels serves as a primary troubleshooting step for reception problems.

System Requirements:

While not a direct maintenance feature, adhering to the recommended system requirements (processor speed, RAM, graphics card, available PCI-E slot, hard drive space) is crucial for the device's stable operation. Ensuring your PC meets or exceeds these requirements minimizes performance issues and contributes to the longevity of the device's functionality within your system.

Physical Maintenance:

As an internal PCI-E card, the WinTV-HVR-1265 requires minimal physical maintenance. Ensuring the computer's internal environment is clean and free of excessive dust can help maintain proper airflow and prevent overheating, which is beneficial for all internal components, including the TV tuner card.
