Do you have a question about the Hawk MiniWave Ultrasonic Level Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The MiniWave Ultrasonic Level Series is a liquid level measurement device designed for continuous measurement in various industrial applications. It operates on the principle of emitting an ultrasonic pulse, which reflects off the liquid surface and returns to the transducer. The reflected signal is then processed by specially developed software to enhance accuracy and reject false echoes. Automatic sensitivity control dynamically adjusts and improves the received echoes for optimal measurement.

Function Description:

The MiniWave is a compact, loop-powered ultrasonic level transmitter. It provides continuous, non-contact level measurement for liquids, offering an effortless and intuitive operation. The device is designed for easy and flexible mounting, compatible with a range of chemical environments. It supports various display modes, including Level, % Level, Space, and Volume (requires PC with GoshawkII software). The unit can be programmed to set low and high level measurement points (4mA and 20mA respectively) and features adjustable output response time and smoothness (Damping). A failsafe output can be configured for conditions where a level cannot be detected.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Frequency: 50 kHz
  • Operating Voltage: 7-28VDC at the terminal (residual ripple no greater than 100mV)
  • Power Consumption: 500mW @ 24VDC
  • Analog Output: 4-20mA modulating output module with HART (Recommended 250 Ohm @ 24VDC)
  • Analog Resolution: 14 bits
  • Communications: HART (Generic - Universal Commands only) and GoshawKII via HART.
  • Blanking Distance: 250 mm (10")
  • Maximum Range: 12 metres (40ft)
  • Resolution: 1 mm (0.04")
  • Electronic Accuracy: +/- 0.25% of maximum range
  • Operating Temperature: -40°C to 60°C (-40°F to 140°F)
  • Maximum Operating Pressure: -0.5 to 3 bar (0 - 44 PSI)
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation: Yes
  • Beam Angle:
  • Materials: Transducer: PVDF, Housing: Powder coated aluminum
  • Display: 4 line graphic display (128 x 64)
  • Keypad: 4 keys (CAL, RUN, UP, DOWN)
  • Memory: >10 years data retention
  • Enclosure Sealing: IP67
  • Cable Entries: M20 cable glands
  • Mounting: 2" BSPT Thread or 2" NPT Thread
  • Typical Weight: 1kg (2.2 pounds)
  • Volume: Pre-set common vessel shapes, 32 point programmable linearization table (requires PC connection with GoshawkII software).

Usage Features:

The MiniWave is designed for ease of use with a simple 4-button keypad (CAL, RUN, UP, DOWN) and a graphic display.

  • Powering On: When power is applied, the unit automatically starts up, displaying boot diagnostics, serial numbers, software version, and model types. It re-scans for the level upon power-up.
  • Navigation: The CAL button accesses the Main Menu and, when held for 3 seconds, the AutoSet Menu. The RUN button cancels/returns from menus and re-activates the unit. The UP and DOWN buttons scroll between live diagnostics, menu options, and adjust parameters.
  • Setup: The unit uses automatic sensitivity control. For best results, a liquid level or flat surface should be present below the transducer during initial setup. Users can adjust display units (MilMetre, CenMetre, Metres, Feet, Inches), set low and high level points, and configure damping.
  • AutoSet: This feature allows the unit to scan and program the high or low level to the detected distance. After the scan, users are prompted to accept the measured distance. High and Low levels can also be manually adjusted in the 'Setup' menu.
  • Advanced Settings: Includes parameters for HART protocol settings (Comms), Blanking distance adjustment, Tracking speed (Slow, Medium, Fast, InstaTrack), Mapping (to ignore false echoes), EchoSize (to adjust sensitivity to echoes), Analog output adjustments, Sensitivity control, WaveBoost (for additional echo amplification), Factory Reset, and Device Info.
  • Lock Code: The unit features an enable/disable lock code for security.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as incorrect distance display (adjust Sensitivity, WaveBoost, check for material presence), erratic/unstable analog trends (increase Damping, choose slower Tracking speed, check for obstructions), and locked up or flat line measurements (confirm material presence, perform Mapping, adjust Sensitivity/WaveBoost, check Blanking distance, increase Tracking speed).
  • PLC Indication Mismatch: Advice includes connecting a multimeter to verify mA readings, checking High Level and Low Level settings.
  • AutoSet Failure: Solutions involve increasing Sensitivity, allowing more time for the unit to run, increasing WaveBoost, or manually setting High and Low levels.
  • Remote Innovation: HawkLink 3G communication device allows remote access for diagnostics, calibration, and performance checks by the Global Support Team, facilitating efficient after-sales service.
  • Knowledge Sharing: HAWK emphasizes sharing expertise with customers and its distribution network to ensure long-term solutions and efficient processes.

The MiniWave is available in two models: MWN1A (with 2" NPT thread) and MWB1A (with 2" BSPT thread). Accessories include FA2NB-4 and FA2BB-4 ANSI Polypropylene Flanges for NPT and BSPT threaded units respectively, and Hawklink-MiniUSB for PC connection with GoshawkII software.
