Installing the bottom shelf
Before you begin, discard the black
circular pieces found when unpacking this
product. They are for shipping purposes
only.

(D). Repeat for the remaining poles.
Determine the desired position of the shelf
(A). Ensure that it is no more than 6 in. from
the floor.
Place two tapered sleeves (B) into the
appropriate groove on each pole assembly.
Ensure the “UP” arrow faces up. Ensure
each sleeve is the same height to ensure
the shelf is level when installed.
Place the shelf (A) on its side and slide each
pole assembly through the bottom of the
shelf (A) until snug. After all pole
assemblies are in place, position the unit in

Overview

This document describes the assembly, usage, and maintenance of an HDX 5-Tier Shelving Unit, Item # 401454, Model # E40901800BK5THD. It is designed for general storage purposes, offering a robust and versatile solution for organizing various items in a home, garage, or commercial setting. The unit is NSF certified, indicating it meets public health and safety standards.

Function Description:

The 5-Tier Shelving Unit provides five levels of storage space, allowing users to organize and store a wide range of items. Its primary function is to offer stable and accessible vertical storage, maximizing space utilization. The unit is designed for stationary use but can be converted into a mobile unit with optional casters. Each shelf is capable of holding a substantial amount of weight, making it suitable for heavy-duty storage. The assembly process is straightforward, requiring minimal tools and effort, and it includes features for stability and safety, such as wall mounting and adjustable levelers.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Item Number: 401454
  • Model Number: E40901800BK5THD
  • Number of Tiers: 5
  • Shelf Capacity: Each shelf holds up to 350 lbs, evenly distributed.
  • Caster Compatibility (Optional):
    • Caster sizes: 3 in. or 4 in.
    • Thread diameter: 3/8 in.
    • Total load capacity with 3 in. casters: 350 lbs (evenly distributed).
    • Total load capacity with 4 in. casters: 450 lbs (evenly distributed).
  • Certifications: NSF certified, ensuring compliance with public health and safety standards.
  • Materials: The components include shelves (A), tapered sleeves (B), bottom poles with pre-installed levelers (C), and top poles (D). Hardware includes washers (AA), anchors (BB), and screws (CC) for wall mounting.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The unit requires assembly, which is recommended for two adults. It should be assembled on a soft surface like carpet to prevent scratching the finish. The assembly process involves screwing bottom poles (C) to top poles (D) to create pole assemblies. Tapered sleeves (B) are placed onto the pole assemblies, ensuring the "UP" arrow faces up and they are level. Shelves (A) are then slid down over the sleeves and pushed into position.
  • Adjustable Shelves: While not explicitly stated as "adjustable," the assembly process allows for the determination of shelf positions, with the first shelf recommended to be no more than 6 inches from the floor. This implies a degree of customization in shelf height during initial setup.
  • Stability: The unit incorporates several features to ensure stability:
    • Levelers: Bottom poles (C) come with pre-installed levelers that can be adjusted to ensure the shelving unit is level on uneven surfaces. Rotating levelers counterclockwise raises the poles, and clockwise lowers them.
    • Wall Mounting: For enhanced stability and safety, the unit can be mounted to a wall using the provided hardware (washers AA, anchors BB, screws CC). This step is explicitly stated as "required to ensure the stability of the shelves" and involves drilling pilot holes and securing the top shelf to the wall.
  • Optional Mobility: The unit can be converted into a mobile shelving unit by purchasing and installing optional casters. This involves unscrewing and removing the leveling feet and replacing them with casters of either 3 in. or 4 in. size with a 3/8 in. thread diameter.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Tipping Hazard: Users are cautioned against allowing children to play or climb on the product. It must be placed on a level surface to avoid tipping.
    • Overload Prevention: Each shelf has a maximum capacity of 350 lbs, evenly distributed, and users are warned not to overload them.
    • Caster Usage (if applicable): When using casters, specific guidelines must be followed to prevent tipping and injury: push mobile units in a long direction, use caution with heavily loaded carts, place heavy objects on the lowest shelf, and inspect casters regularly.

Maintenance Features:

  • Caster Inspection (if applicable): If optional casters are installed, they should be inspected before use, and any worn casters should be replaced immediately to maintain safety and functionality.
  • General Care: While not explicitly detailed, general maintenance would likely involve regular cleaning of the shelves and poles to prevent dust and grime buildup. Checking the tightness of connections and the levelness of the unit periodically would also contribute to its longevity and safe operation. The durable construction suggests a low-maintenance design.
  • Replacement Parts: The manual implies that if any part appears missing or damaged upon unpacking, customers should contact customer service, suggesting that replacement parts may be available.
