Overview

This document is a user's manual and operating instructions for HEAT STREAM propane forced air heaters, covering models HS-40-GFA, HS-60V-GFA, HS-125V-GFA, and HS-150V-GFA.

Function Description:

The HEAT STREAM heaters are direct-fired, forced-air construction heaters designed for temporary heating of buildings under construction, alteration, or repair, for both indoor and outdoor use. They operate by forcing all combustion products into the heated area. These heaters achieve approximately 98%+ combustion efficiency, but still produce small amounts of carbon monoxide, necessitating adequate ventilation. They are unvented portable heaters that consume oxygen from the surrounding area, requiring sufficient combustion and ventilation air. The primary purpose is to provide safe and economical temporary heating in construction environments.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Numbers: HS-40-GFA, HS-60V-GFA, HS-125V-GFA, HS-150V-GFA.
  • Fuel Type: LP (Propane) gas only. The heater is shipped from the factory for LP gas use and cannot be converted to other gases.
  • Power Source: Requires a 120V, 60 Hz, grounded electrical connection.
  • Extension Cord Requirements:
    • 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters): 18 AWG conductor.
    • 11 to 100 feet (3.4 to 30.53 meters): 16 AWG conductor.
    • 101 to 200 feet (30.8 to 61 meters): 14 AWG conductor.
  • Combustion Efficiency: Approximately 98%+.
  • Safety Features:
    • 100% safety shut-off system.
    • Equipped with a 3-prong (grounding) plug for shock hazard protection.
    • Thermal switch to shut down operation if internal temperature is too high.
  • Input Ratings: Adjustable (except HS-40-GFA). The HS-40-GFA model has a fixed 40,000 BTU output.
  • Minimum and Maximum Inlet Pressure:
    • Minimum: 5 PSI for all models.
    • Maximum: Bottle Pressure for all models.
  • LP Cylinder Requirements: Must use a propane vapor withdrawal supply system. LP cylinders must be equipped with a collar to protect the gas valve, a shut-off valve, and a safety relief valve.
  • Ventilation: Requires a fresh air opening of at least three square feet (2,800 sq. cm.) for each 100,000 BTU/Hr of heater output. For example, an HS-150V-GFA requires:
    • A two-car garage door open 6 inches, OR
    • A single car garage open 9 inches, OR
    • Two thirty-two inch wide windows open 15 inches.
  • Clearances to Combustible Materials:
    • Sides: 24 inches
    • Top: 36 inches
    • Front: 72 inches
  • LP Cylinder Placement: Must be located at least 6 feet (10 ft. in Canada) from the heater. Do not direct heater discharge towards the LP cylinder unless it is at least 20 feet from the heater.

Usage Features:

  • Portability: The heater is portable, stable, and fully assembled.
  • Ignition: Features continuous spark ignition or piezo spark ignition (depending on the model).
  • Adjustable Height: Includes an adjustable height controller.
  • Wind and Rain Protection: Designed to be wind resistant and rain protected.
  • Operation:
    1. Connect the power cord to a properly grounded 3-prong 120V, 60 Hz extension cord.
    2. Connect the heater to a proper LP cylinder.
    3. Turn the gas valve clockwise to the OFF position.
    4. Wait five minutes for any gas to clear.
    5. Push in and turn the gas control knob counterclockwise to the LOW/IGN position to light the burner. Keep pressing the control knob for at least 30 seconds after lighting.
    6. Once the burner stays lit, turn the gas valve knob counterclockwise to the desired setting (for models other than HS-40-GFA).
  • Shutdown:
    1. Turn the gas valve knob clockwise to the OFF position.
    2. Turn the gas supply OFF by turning the LP cylinder valve clockwise to close.
    3. Disconnect the power cord.
  • Leak Testing: All gas connections must be leak-tested with a 50/50 soap and water solution prior to start-up. Bubbles indicate a leak. Never use a flame to check for leaks.
  • LP Cylinder Management: The manual provides a table indicating the minimum number of 100 lb LP cylinders required based on ambient temperature for different heater models to ensure adequate vapor withdrawal.
  • Safety Warnings: Emphasizes hazards such as fire, explosion, burns, asphyxiation, carbon monoxide poisoning, and electric shock. It explicitly states that the heater is not for home or recreational use and should not be used in residential living areas or non-adequately ventilated enclosed spaces. It also warns against storing propane cylinders indoors.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: The heater should be inspected before each use, and at least annually by a qualified service person. More frequent cleaning may be required.
  • Hose/Regulator Inspection: Inspect the regulator/hose assembly prior to each use for abrasion, wear, or cuts. Replace if necessary with the proper assembly.
  • Cleaning: The inside of the heater should be cleaned once a month.
  • Spark Gap Check: Check the spark gap at least once per heating season.
  • Storage: Always disconnect the heater from the LP cylinder before storage. If stored indoors, the LP tank MUST be disconnected and stored outdoors in a well-ventilated area, out of reach of children, and in accordance with safety standards. Re-install the plastic valve plug or cover on the cylinder valve to protect the fitting. Never store an LP cylinder inside a building or near any gas or oil burning appliances.
  • Service: Service and repair must be performed by a qualified service person.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides a table of common symptoms, possible causes (e.g., no electric power, fan blades bent, no spark, corroded electrode, thermal switch shutdown, damaged control valve, dust accumulation), and corresponding solutions (e.g., check power, straighten fan blades, replace motor, inspect/replace spark module, set plug gap, clean heater).
