Installation of the Twistep
We have assembled the TWISTEP for the most-common height in either 2 x 2 or 1 ¼ x 1 ¼
installations. Your vehicle may require that you adjust the TWISTEP height, depending on the clearance
for the TWISTEP to operate properly and to rotate correctly when it is not in use. The goal is to have the
TWISTEP as high as it can be, yet still clear the underneath of the vehicle when you twist into the not-in-
use position.

Overview

The PortablePET TWISTEP is a pet step designed to assist pets in entering and exiting vehicles, particularly those with a hitch receiver. It is manufactured by Heininger Holdings, LLC.

Function Description:

The TWISTEP is a vehicle-mounted pet step that attaches to a vehicle's hitch receiver. Its primary function is to provide a stable and accessible step for pets, especially dogs, to safely get into and out of a vehicle without requiring human lifting or jumping, which can be strenuous for both pets and owners. The device features a swivel movement, allowing the step platform to be rotated out for use and then twisted back under the vehicle for storage when not needed. This design aims to keep the step out of the way during driving and when not in use, while also protecting it from potential damage. The TWISTEP is designed to ride higher than the vehicle's drive and suspension components to minimize impact with the ground on uneven surfaces or steep driveways.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Hitch Compatibility: The TWISTEP is designed for use with either 2" x 2" or 1¼" x 1¼" hitch receivers. It comes pre-assembled with a 2" x 2" adaptor. For smaller hitches, the adaptor can be removed using the included Hex Key.
  • Weight Capacity: The TWISTEP itself can support up to 400 pounds. However, the actual weight limit is ultimately determined by the tongue weight limit of the vehicle's hitch. For example, most Class III hitches have a tongue weight limit of 500 pounds, while most Class II hitches have a tongue weight limit of 300 pounds. Users are advised to check their vehicle's specific tongue weight rating.
  • Materials: The device includes a 2" aluminum sleeve (pre-attached) and a receiver bolt made of durable materials suitable for outdoor use and supporting pet weight.
  • Patents: The TWISTEP is protected by several patents, including Patent Numbers: 7,204,501; 7,025,365; 6,935,647; 6,659,484.
  • Dimensions/Weight (Implied): While specific dimensions and weight are not provided, the device is described as potentially heavy to hold up during installation, suggesting a robust construction.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The TWISTEP is installed by inserting its receiver bar into the vehicle's hitch receiver. The height of the TWISTEP assembly can be adjusted to ensure proper clearance and rotation. This involves loosening and removing four screws with a Hex Key, adjusting the height, and then re-attaching the receiver bar. The goal is to position the step as high as possible while still allowing it to clear the vehicle's underside when twisted into the "not-in-use" position.
  • Anti-Wobble Function: The receiver bar includes an anti-wobble function, which, when the receiver bolt is tightened, prevents wobbling or rattling of the TWISTEP.
  • Operation: To use the step, the T-Handle is lifted to release the swivel mechanism, and the platform is twisted 180 degrees until a locating pin snaps back into place, securing it in the "use" position. To stow, the step is twisted back under the vehicle until the locating pins snap into place.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Do not stand or ride on TWISTEP while the vehicle is in motion.
    • Ensure the vehicle engine is shut off before/during using TWISTEP.
    • Always stow TWISTEP out of the way when not in use to prevent injury.
    • Do not use TWISTEP as a platform to carry items while the vehicle is in motion or as a towing device.
    • Ensure the locating pin is locked in place after rotating the TWISTEP for use or storage.
    • Do not rotate TWISTEP while someone (or a dog) is standing on it.
    • Basic safety precautions and close supervision are necessary, especially when used by or near children and pets.
    • Do not operate or use TWISTEP when tired, ill, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
    • Use TWISTEP only for its intended purpose.
    • Do not exceed the vehicle's hitch tongue weight limit.
    • Take appropriate safety precautions in adverse weather (e.g., dry, remove ice, be mindful of heat).
    • Do not overreach; maintain proper footing and balance.
    • Stop using immediately if unstable, damaged, or malfunctioning.
    • Never use undue force to operate.
    • Be aware of potential ground impact when driving over steep driveways or uneven surfaces.
  • Special Vehicle Requirements: For certain vehicle models (2006-2015 Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon, 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee, and some Nissan Pathfinders), an additional bracket (item #3053, Twistep Height Extension) may be required.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Checks: The hitch bolt and all TWISTEP fasteners should be double-checked once a month (or every time it's reinstalled) to ensure secure attachment, addressing any loosening due to vehicle/road vibration.
  • Cleaning: The TWISTEP should be cleaned periodically with soap and water to remove sand, grit, and other debris that could interfere with smooth operation. In salty conditions, thorough washing is recommended weekly.
  • Lubrication: Routine lubrication of the T-handle shaft with 3-In-One® Oil is required to ensure the knob lifts easily and the platform rotates smoothly.
  • Storage: Always stow the TWISTEP out of the way when driving through an automated car wash to prevent damage.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a One-Year Limited Liability Warranty covering defects in workmanship and materials from the date of purchase from an authorized PortablePET dealer. Warranty claims require a sales receipt and product registration on www.heininger.biz. The warranty covers repair or replacement at Heininger Holdings' option but does not cover normal wear and tear, cosmetic blemishes, improper assembly, lack of maintenance, custom alteration, or damage from accident, abuse, or neglect. Transportation costs for warranty inspection are the owner's responsibility.
