This document describes the HOLTEN SAFE 2000 and MAXI SAFE 2000 Class II biological safety cabinets, designed to protect the operator, surroundings, and work process from particle/microbiological contamination. These cabinets comply with various international standards, including NSF Std 49, Nordiska R3-Föreningens Norm for säkerhetsbänkar, DIN 12950 Teil 10, NF 44/201, and BS 5726 (92).
Function Description
The HOLTEN SAFE 2000 and MAXI SAFE 2000 cabinets are microprocessor-controlled Class II biological safety cabinets. Maintenance Features
Regular maintenance is crucial for reliable operation and compliance with safety standards.
Recommended Maintenance:
- DAILY: Disinfect the work area, lift tabletops, and wipe the backside and trough.
- WEEKLY: Wipe the exterior of the unit with a mild household detergent.
- REGULARLY (by qualified technician):
- Test correct air velocities.
- Test efficiency of installed HEPA filters.
- Test tightness of the construction.
- These tests should be performed at intervals of approximately 5000 hours of operation or at least once a year.
Filter Change Indication:
The LCD display provides a clear indication for filter change (Fig. 4). A flow graph illuminates in all segments when the filter is new and clean. As the filter becomes contaminated, segments will turn off, indicating the need for replacement.
Cleaning the Inside Front Window:
- Bring the front window to the highest position using button (5).
- Open the front shield.
- Clean the inside window.
Safety Precautions for Installation:
- Ensure the installation site is draught-free and away from frequent pedestrian traffic.
- Mount stainless steel tabletops over the trough.
- Adjust levelling screws for a horizontal and level tabletop.
- Connect the cabinet to the Mains, ensuring compliance with supply specifications and protection by a high-sensitive leakage current contact breaker.
- Valves for gases, vacuum, or liquids are positioned in a separate plate in the side window and should be connected by an authorized technician.
Important Notes for Operation:
- The cabinet should be used indoors in a normal clinical environment (18-28 °C, normal humidity, atmospheric pressure).
- Not for outdoor use or environments with high humidity/pollution.
- Not constructed to ventilate vapours with acid or organic solvents; not a fume hood.
- Switch on fan at normal speed 10 minutes prior to usage.
- Clean and disinfect work chamber and windows with 70% ethanol or similar lint-free wipe.
- Clean/disinfect objects before introducing them into the work chamber.
- Front window must be in working position during work.
- Place product behind front suction holes, as far back as possible.
- Work with steady/soft movements.
- Never overload the work chamber.
- Reduce transfers into and out of the work chamber.
- Avoid products with strong heat emission.
- Do not position the cabinet in places with direct draught or frequent passing of persons.
Biohazard Work:
- Never perform work with the fan at reduced speed.
- The cabinet should not be used for group 4 pathogens or HIGH-RISK biological agents (Class 4 by CDC, oncogenic viruses by NCI).
- Never operate without the fan compartment cover in place to ensure personal protection and prevent contact with rotating fan.
Disinfectants:
- Avoid products containing iodine, chloramine, chlorine dioxide, hypochloride, phenol, and perchloric acid.
- Recommended disinfectants contain alcohol or aldehydes:
- 70% (volume) pure ethanol
- 2% (volume) glutaric aldehyde
- 15% (volume) formaldehyde
