Overview

The Hired-Hand 48" Mega Flow fan is a robust ventilation unit designed for various applications, including agricultural and industrial settings. Its primary function is to provide efficient air movement, and it comes with specific instructions for safe installation, operation, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Function Description

The 48" Mega Flow fan is engineered to move a significant volume of air, making it suitable for environments requiring substantial ventilation. It is designed to be securely mounted, typically from chains, and can be tilted to a desired angle to direct airflow effectively. The fan is equipped with wire guards for user protection, a critical safety feature mandated by national safety codes, especially when the fan is installed within 7 feet (2.1 m) of the floor or within reach of personnel or livestock. The fan can be connected to an automatic controller, allowing for automated operation based on environmental conditions, though users are warned that the fan may start at any time when connected this way. In critical applications, such as life support ventilation systems, the manual emphasizes the need for adequate backup ventilation or acceptance of the inherent risks associated with potential fan failure.

Important Technical Specifications

While specific performance metrics like CFM (cubic feet per minute) or power consumption are not explicitly detailed in the provided pages, the fan's "48" Mega Flow" designation indicates a large-diameter fan designed for high-volume airflow. The fan housing is specifically identified as a "48" Fan Housing," confirming its size. The manual lists several replacement parts with their corresponding part numbers, which can infer some of the fan's components:

  • Prop: Part No. 6403-5012
  • Motor: Part No. 3017-5000
  • Fan Guard: Part No. 6403-0134
  • Hanging Kit: Part No. 6450-7006

These part numbers suggest a modular design, allowing for easier maintenance and replacement of key components. The motor part number (3017-5000) indicates a specific motor designed for this fan, crucial for its performance. The fan guard (6403-0134) is a vital safety component, and the hanging kit (6450-7006) confirms its intended suspension mounting.

Usage Features

The fan is designed for straightforward installation and operation. Before installation, users are instructed to inspect the fan for any transit damage, including loose, missing, or damaged parts, and to familiarize themselves with its operation by reading all instructions. The installation process involves:

  1. Determining Location: Identifying the optimal placement for the fan.
  2. Attaching Support Chains: Connecting top support chains and a rear chain to the fan using S-hooks.
  3. Hanging the Fan: Using S-hooks to connect the support chains to ceiling mounts.
  4. Securing Tension Line: Attaching one end of a tension line to the midpoint of the rear chain.
  5. Tilting the Fan: Adjusting the fan to the desired angle and securing the loose end of the tension line to maintain this tilt.
  6. Ensuring Tension: Verifying that the tension line remains taut at all times.

A critical safety warning highlights the necessity of disconnecting the power source before any installation or servicing to prevent property damage, serious injury, or death. Users are also advised to inspect the fan for any objects that might obstruct blade rotation before operation. If a thermostat is used, the fan's power cord should be connected to the controller for automated temperature regulation. The fan is then ready for operation. The manual explicitly states that the fan should not be operated until the user is completely familiar with its operation and all instructions have been read.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the fan's performance and longevity. The manual outlines key maintenance procedures:

  1. Periodic Cleaning: Blades, motor, and wire guards should be cleaned periodically to reduce vibration and extend fan life. This cleaning should be done using a dry brush or compressed air.
  2. Avoid Water on Motor: A specific warning advises against spraying the motor with water or cleaning fluids, which could damage the electrical components.
  3. Fan Guard Inspection: The fan guard should be cleaned and inspected periodically. A damaged or dirty fan guard can significantly reduce fan performance, emphasizing its role beyond just safety.

The availability of replacement parts further supports the fan's maintainability, allowing users to replace worn or damaged components rather than the entire unit. This includes the prop, motor, fan guard, and hanging kit, ensuring that the fan can be kept in optimal working condition over time.

Warranty Information

The Hired-Hand 48" Mega Flow fan comes with a one-year warranty covering electrical and mechanical defects in material and workmanship. If the fan fails within this period, it can be returned prepaid to the place of purchase for repair or replacement at the manufacturer's discretion. The warranty explicitly states that damage due to accident or abuse is not covered. This warranty provides specific legal rights, and users may have additional rights depending on their state's laws. The manufacturer, HIRED-HAND, INC., is located at 1733 County Road 68, Bremen, AL 35033, with contact information including phone (256-287-1000) and fax (256-287-2000).
