Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the Hitachi RAS-S18CAK / RAC-S18CAK Split Type Air Conditioner, covering both the indoor and outdoor units. It provides essential information on safety precautions, functions, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Hitachi Split Type Air Conditioner is designed to provide cooling, dehumidifying, and air circulation functions for indoor environments. It consists of an indoor unit (RAS-S18CAK) and an outdoor unit (RAC-S18CAK) that work together to regulate room temperature and humidity.

Cooling Operation: The device is used for cooling when the outdoor temperature is between 21°C and 43°C. It allows users to set a desired room temperature, with a recommended range of 25°C to 28°C for optimal cooling. The fan speed can be adjusted to AUTO, HI, MED, or LOW. If indoor humidity is very high (over 80%), some dew may form on the air outlet grille of the indoor unit.

Dehumidifying Operation: This function is active when the room temperature is above 16°C. If the temperature falls below 15°C, the dehumidifying function will not work. During dehumidifying, the fan speed is automatically set to LOW. The recommended room temperature for dehumidifying is between 20°C and 26°C. If the room temperature is higher than the setting, the unit will dehumidify and reduce the temperature. If the room temperature is lower than the setting, dehumidifying will occur at a slightly lower temperature than the current room temperature, and the indoor unit will stop emitting air once the room temperature falls below the setting.

Circulation Operation: In this mode, the compressor does not run, and there is no cooling. Only the indoor fan operates to circulate air. If the setting temperature is higher than the room temperature, the indoor fan will stop running.

Sleep Timer: This feature allows the device to operate for a designated period (1, 2, 3, or 7 hours) and then automatically turn off. During sleep timer operation, the fan speed and room temperature are automatically controlled to ensure a quiet and comfortable environment. For cooling and dehumidifying, the room temperature will be controlled 2°C above the set temperature, and the fan speed will be set to LOW 1 hour after the sleep timer is activated.

ON/OFF Timer: The unit offers both ON and OFF timer functions, allowing users to schedule when the air conditioner starts or stops operation. The timer can be set in 1-hour intervals up to 12 hours.

Air Deflector Adjustment:

  • Horizontal Deflector (Up/Down): The horizontal air deflector automatically adjusts to the optimal angle for each operation. It can be continuously swung up and down or set to a desired fixed angle using the "AUTO SWING" button. During cooling, it's advised not to keep the deflector swinging for extended periods to prevent dew formation and dripping.
  • Vertical Deflector (Left/Right): The vertical air deflector can be manually adjusted to direct conditioned air to the left or right.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model Names: Indoor Unit: RAS-S18CAK, Outdoor Unit: RAC-S18CAK
  • Dimensions:
    • RAS-S18CAK (Indoor Unit): Width 1030 mm, Height 295 mm, Depth 207 mm
    • RAC-S18CAK (Outdoor Unit): Width 850 mm, Height 650 mm, Depth 298 mm
  • Operating Temperature Ranges (Cooling):
    • Indoor (Dry bulb °C): Minimum 21, Maximum 32
    • Indoor (Wet bulb °C): Minimum 15, Maximum 23
    • Outdoor (Dry bulb °C): Minimum 21, Maximum 43
    • Outdoor (Wet bulb °C): Minimum 15, Maximum 26
  • Remote Controller Signal Range: Approximately 7 meters.
  • Power Consumption (OFF mode): The indoor unit consumes about 8W in OFF mode if the main power is left ON.

Usage Features

  • Remote Controller: The primary interface for controlling the indoor unit, featuring buttons for CIRCULATION, DEHUMIDIFYING, COOLING, RESET, STOP, SLEEP, FAN SPEED, AUTO SWING, TEMPERATURE adjustment, OFF-TIMER, and ON-TIMER. A display shows selected room temperature, timer status, function, and circulation intensity.
  • Temporary Switch: Located on the indoor unit, this switch allows basic start/stop operation if the remote controller is not working. Pressing it once starts the unit in the previously set mode; if the power was off and then on again, it starts in automatic mode.
  • Indoor Unit Indicators:
    • OPERATION LAMP: Lights during operation.
    • TIMER LAMP: Lights when the timer is active.
    • FILTER LAMP: Lights after approximately 200 hours of operation to indicate that the filter needs cleaning. It turns off when the "AUTO SWING" button is pressed in "STANDBY MODE."
  • Energy Saving Tips:
    • Install curtains or blinds to reduce heat entering the room through windows.
    • Do not leave doors and windows open for extended periods during operation.
    • Use the timer function effectively to save energy.
  • Health Considerations: Avoid prolonged direct airflow.
  • Child Safety: Young children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the appliance. The appliance is not intended for use by young children or infirm persons unless adequately supervised.

Maintenance Features

  • Pre-filter Cleaning: The pre-filter should be cleaned when the FILTER lamp lights up, or at least monthly.
    1. Open the front panel by holding both sides and pulling up.
    2. Remove the pre-filter by pushing upward to release claws and pulling it out.
    3. Vacuum dust from the pre-filter. If heavily soiled, rinse under running tap water and gently brush with a soft bristle brush. Allow to dry in shade.
    4. Re-insert the pre-filter with the "FRONT" mark facing forward and slot it into place.
    5. Close the front panel by pushing on the three arrow portions.
  • Air Purifying Filters (Optional): These filters prevent dust and should be attached to the pre-filter frame. They are washable and can be used for up to 1 year. The type number for ordering replacements is . Operating the air conditioner without a pre-filter can lead to dust entering the unit and causing faults. Using air purifying filters may slightly reduce cooling capacity and speed, so setting the fan speed to "HIGH" is recommended in this condition.
  • Washable Front Panel: The front panel can be removed and washed with clean water and a soft sponge using neutral detergent. After washing, ensure it is thoroughly dried. If not removed, wipe it with a soft dry cloth.
  • Maintenance Before Long Off Period: If the unit will not be used for an extended period, run it in "CIRCULATION" mode at 16°C with HI fan speed for about half a day on a fine day to dry the unit completely. Then, switch off the power plug.
  • Regular Inspection: Qualified service personnel should check the unit every half-yearly or yearly for:
    • Disconnected or broken earth line.
    • Rust or instability of the mounting frame and outdoor unit.
    • Firm connection of the power line plug to the socket.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a checklist for common issues like the unit not operating or not cooling well, advising users to check the fuse, voltage, circuit breaker, air filter cleanliness, outdoor unit obstruction, open doors/windows, heat sources, and set temperature.
  • Safety during Cleaning: Always stop operation and switch off the power supply/circuit breaker before cleaning or maintenance.
  • Prohibited Cleaning Agents: Do not use hot water (above 40°C), benzine, gasoline, acid, thinner, or a brush on plastic surfaces, as they can cause damage or shrinkage. Do not use detergent on air purifying filters as it may deteriorate electrostatic performance.
  • Supply Cord: If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or a similarly qualified person.
