Overview

This document is the owner's manual for the HIX N-840/N-640 and C-800/C-600 series of heat transfer machines. These are air automatic heat transfer machines designed for various applications, ranging from T-shirt shops and retail to commercial and high-volume operations.

Function Description

The HIX N-840/N-640 and C-800/C-600 machines are designed to apply heat transfers to garments and other materials. They utilize an air-powered mechanism for automatic operation, ensuring consistent pressure and efficient transfer application. The machines are available in both analog and digital versions, offering different control interfaces for temperature and time settings. The N-840/N-640 models are ideal for T-shirt shops and retail, while the C-800/C-600 models are recommended for heavy service, continuous, and high-volume applications due to their robust design.

Important Technical Specifications

Models:

  • N-840/N-640: 16"x20" / 15"x15" Air Automatic Heat Transfer Machines (Analog and Digital)
  • C-800/C-600: 16"x20" / 15"x15" Commercial Air Automatic Heat Transfer Machines (Analog and Digital)

Power Requirements:

  • Air Source: 100-125 P.S.I. (6.8-8.5 bar) clean and dry air source, requiring 1-1/2 to 2 CFM. A 1/4" NPT air inlet is located on the left side panel. An external air filter and water trap are strongly recommended to prevent damage to internal air-operated components (C-800/600 models include a filter).
  • Electrical:
    • Fuses (120V): MDA-15 (N-840, N-640, C-800, C-600)
    • Fuses (220V): MDA-10 (N-840, C-800), MDA-8 (N-640, C-600)
    • When using an extension cord, use 12 or 14 gauge, 3-conductor, with a maximum length of 25 feet (7.62 m).

Heat Recovery:

  • C-800/C-600 (120 volt models): Slower heat recovery (18-20 seconds @ 375°F).
  • C-800/C-600 (220 volt models): Quicker cycle times (10 seconds @ 375°F).

Pressure:

  • Adjustable via an air pressure control knob and monitored by an air pressure gauge.
  • Recommended setting: 40 P.S.I. (pounds per square inch).
  • The machine is protected by a factory-preset pressure release valve.

Usage Features

Unpacking and Installation:

  • Users are advised to save all packing materials for potential future shipping or repairs.
  • Upon receipt, inspect for hidden shipping damage and contact the delivery company if found.
  • Installation involves removing plywood shipping base bolts, attaching provided feet, plugging into a grounded electrical outlet, and connecting to a clean, dry air source.

Temperature and Time Control:

  • Digital Versions:
    • Turn on the machine via the on/off switch.
    • Press the "menu" button to toggle between "TEMP" and "TIME" settings.
    • Use the up/down buttons to adjust the desired temperature or time.
    • Press the "menu" button a third time to lock in settings.
    • Wait for the machine to reach the preset temperature.
  • Analog Versions:
    • Turn the heat control knob to "8" for approximately 350°F (177°C).
    • The heat light indicates heating and cycles on/off to maintain temperature.
    • Adjust the heat control knob to the desired temperature.
    • Set the timer by turning the dial to the desired time setting.
    • Important: The timer mode should always be set to "E" for proper operation.

Pressure Control:

  • The air pressure control knob must be pulled out for adjustments and pushed in to lock.
  • Adjust pressure by turning the regulator control knob while monitoring the gauge.
  • Turn clockwise to increase pressure, counter-clockwise to reduce.
  • Always consult transfer manufacturer's guidelines for pressure recommendations.

Transfer Application:

  • Set temperature, time, and pressure according to transfer recommendations.
    • Typical Cold Peel: 350°F (177°C), 15 seconds.
    • Typical Hot Split: 375°F (190°C), 10-12 seconds.
  • Align the garment on the lower platen and smooth out wrinkles. A platen release switch (N-840/640 only) allows bringing the heated platen into contact with the garment to remove wrinkles before transfer positioning.
  • Position the transfer, then pull the operating handle down until the lower platen engages (approx. 1 second), then release.
  • The machine opens automatically at the end of the set time.
  • Peel the paper off the transfer continuously, away from the garment, without folding it back on itself.
  • Hot Peel/Split Transfers: Peel immediately after the machine opens; do not allow to cool.
  • Cold Peel Transfers: Rub with an eraser or cloth and allow to cool for 5-10 seconds before removing the release paper.
  • Successful transfer depends on the correct balance of time, temperature, and pressure, which vary based on material type, thickness, and transfer type.

Maintenance Features

Safety Warning: Always unplug the machine from electrical and air supplies before performing maintenance or repairs.

Lubrication:

  • Lubricate every 6 months using 3-in-1 oil (1-2 drops) at the joints of all moving parts.

Mechanical Inspection:

  • Every 12 months or 100,000 cycles (whichever comes first), verify the tightness of the two gas spring retaining bolts (N-840/640D models only, part #80 on page 12).
  • Use a 3/16" attachment on a torque wrench and tighten bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (120 in lbs.). Loose bolts can cause the gas spring to come loose and the upper heat head to fall, potentially injuring the operator.

Cleaning Heat Platen:

  • The heat platen can be cleaned with steel wool, a scrubbing aluminum sponge, or a fine wire brush.

Troubleshooting and Repairs:

  • The manual provides detailed flowcharts for troubleshooting common issues such as "Little or no heat," "Machine overheats," "Machine will not stay closed," "Machine doesn't open at the end of time cycle," and "Machine jerks or flies open at the end of time cycle."
  • Thermostat Bypass (Analog Only): Instructions are provided to bypass the thermostat to diagnose heating issues. If the heat light comes on and the machine heats, the thermostat needs replacement.
  • Fuse Replacement: Instructions for locating and replacing blown fuses with the correct amperage (MDA-15 for 120V, MDA-10 or MDA-8 for 220V depending on model).
  • Relay Bypass (Analog Only): Instructions for temporarily bypassing the relay to test if it's the cause of heating issues. This is a test only and the machine should not be operated with the relay bypassed.
  • Customer Service Tech Sheets are available online at www.hixcorp.com or by calling 620-231-8568. Parts ordering is available online.

Shipping or Returns:

  • Users are strongly advised to save all original shipping/packing materials and to ship the machine only in its original box to prevent damage.
  • Instructions include fastening the machine to the plywood shipping base, securing the handle, and placing it in the original box with liners.
