Overview

This document provides a quick reference guide for the Clear-Com RS-702 Dual-Channel Beltpack and the RS-703 TW Dual-Channel Beltpack, outlining their functions, controls, connectors, and maintenance features. Both beltpacks are designed for professional intercom systems, enabling clear and reliable communication in various production environments.

Function Description

The Clear-Com RS-702 and RS-703 beltpacks serve as user interfaces within an intercom system, allowing individuals to communicate on two independent channels (Channel A and Channel B). They facilitate two-way audio communication, call signaling, and program audio monitoring. The RS-702 is a standard dual-channel beltpack, while the RS-703 is a TW (Two-Wire) Dual-Channel Beltpack, indicating its compatibility with specific two-wire intercom systems.

Core Functions:

  • Two-Way Communication: Users can initiate and receive audio communication on either Channel A or Channel B.
  • Call Signaling: The beltpacks allow users to send and receive visual call signals, alerting other users to an incoming communication request.
  • Program Audio Monitoring: Both models support the input and monitoring of external program audio, which can be mixed with intercom audio.
  • Headset Interface: They provide a connection point for a headset, integrating microphone input and headphone output for hands-free operation.
  • Intercom System Integration: The beltpacks connect to the main intercom system via dedicated intercom cables, enabling them to be part of a larger communication network.

Usage Features

Both the RS-702 and RS-703 beltpacks share a common set of user-friendly controls and indicators, designed for intuitive operation in demanding environments.

Top View Controls and Indicators:

  • Volume Controls (Ch-A and Ch-B): Rotary knobs located at the top of the beltpack allow users to adjust the audio volume level for each channel independently.
  • Talk Buttons (Ch-A and Ch-B): These buttons initiate communication on the respective channel. They can be pressed and held for momentary talk or tapped to latch the talk function on, freeing the user's hands.
  • Talk LEDs (Ch-A and Ch-B): Adjacent to the talk buttons, these LEDs illuminate when the intercom channel's talk function is active, providing visual feedback to the user.
  • Call Buttons (Ch-A and Ch-B): These buttons activate a call signal on the respective channel, alerting other users.
  • Call LEDs (Ch-A and Ch-B): These LEDs light up when a call signal is received on the corresponding channel, providing a visual alert.
  • Power LED: This indicator confirms that the beltpack is receiving power and is operational.

Bottom View Connectors:

  • Intercom Cable Receptacle: This is the primary input for connecting the beltpack to the intercom system.
    • RS-702: 6-pin XLR female connector.
    • RS-703: 3-pin XLR female connector.
  • Intercom Cable Loop-Thru: This output allows multiple beltpacks to be daisy-chained together, extending the intercom line.
    • RS-702: 6-pin XLR male connector.
    • RS-703: 3-pin XLR male connector.
  • Program Audio Level Control: A small rotary control to adjust the input level of external program audio.
  • Headset Cable Receptacle: A 4-pin XLR male connector for connecting a headset.
  • Program Audio Input (RS-703 only): A 3.5mm balanced input jack for program audio. It's important to note that this input does not work with stereo audio.

DIP Switch Settings (Accessible via maintenance): The DIP switches offer advanced configuration options to customize the beltpack's behavior:

  • Mic Type: Selects between dynamic (ON) and electret (OFF) microphone types for headset compatibility.
  • Headset Output Level: Adjusts the headset audio output level (High or Low).
  • Min Volume, Ch-A/Ch-B: Determines if the volume control mutes the audio at its minimum setting or allows a low level of audio.
  • LEDs On/Off: Enables or disables all LEDs for discreet operation.
  • Call-on Talk Enable, Ch-A/Ch-B: Configures whether a call signal is automatically sent when the talk button is activated.
  • Talk Latch Enable, Ch-A/Ch-B: Enables or disables the latching function for the talk buttons.
  • RTS/Clear-Com Select (RS-703 only): Configures the RS-703 for compatibility with either RTS or Clear-Com intercom systems.

Side-Tone Adjustment: Small screws labeled "Side-Tone A" and "Side-Tone B" allow users to adjust the level of their own voice heard in their headset for each channel, enhancing comfort and natural communication.

Maintenance Features

The beltpacks are designed with features that facilitate maintenance and configuration adjustments.

Accessing DIP Switches and Side-Tone Adjustments:

  • Belt Clip Mechanism: To access the DIP switches and side-tone adjustments, the belt clip needs to be loosened by unscrewing a slotted screw located inside a keyhole on the back of the beltpack.
  • Swivel and Slide: The belt clip can then be swiveled and slid up or down, exposing the DIP switch bank and the side-tone adjustment screws. It is not necessary to completely remove the belt clip for these adjustments.
  • Tool Requirement: A small, flat-blade screwdriver is required to adjust the DIP switches and the side-tone screws.

Connector Pinouts: The manual provides detailed pinout diagrams for all connectors, including the headset (XLR4M), intercom (XLR6M/F for RS-702, XLR3M/F for RS-703), and program audio (TRS Jack for RS-703). These diagrams are crucial for troubleshooting connectivity issues and ensuring proper wiring.
