Do you have a question about the HOLDEN Astra City 2001 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is a supplement to the owner's handbook for the Holden Astra TS series, specifically covering the three-door City and SRi models. It provides additional information and modifications to the main handbook, and should be kept with the original in the vehicle's glovebox.

The Holden Astra TS series, as described in this supplement, is a range of three-door vehicles, including City and SRi models. The supplement details specific features and maintenance requirements for these variants, distinguishing them from other Astra models.

  • Fuel Tank Capacity: 52 litres.
  • Coolant Capacity: Approximately 6.8 litres.
  • Coolant Specification: 50% water and 50% Dex-Cool, conforming to GM6277M specification.
  • Brake Fluid Type: Heavy duty brake fluid, DOT 4, SAE spec. J1703.
  • Petrol Requirements (RON): Use clean, UNLEADED PETROL of at least 91 octane rating. High octane (PREMIUM UNLEADED) can be used for slight improvement in engine power and torque.
  • Tyre Size (SRi): 205/50 R16. Note: Due to lack of clearance, tyre chains may not be used on SRi Astras.

Dimensions:

Feature City SRi
Overall length 4,110 mm 4,110 mm
Overall width (inc. mirrors) 1,967 mm 1,967 mm
Overall height (at curb) 1,429 mm 1,429 mm
Track – Front 1,484 mm 1,464 mm
Track – Rear 1,472 mm 1,452 mm
Wheel base – at curb 2,614 mm 2,614 mm
Wheel base – at GVM 2,606 mm 2,606 mm

Weights:

  • Carrying Capacity: Recommended 445 kg, including 5 occupants and luggage. Maximum Rear Axle Load and Gross Vehicle Weight must not be exceeded.
  • Curb Weight (unloaded car with full tank):
    • 3 door model: 1130 kg
    • SRi model: 1150 kg
    • Add 20 kg for automatic transmission.
    • Add 30 kg for air conditioning.
  • Gross Vehicle Mass (G.V.M.): Maximum allowable weight when fully loaded (including luggage, passengers, roof rack load, full tank of fuel, and tow bar ball load if towing).
    • 3 door and SRi models: 1675 kg.
  • Maximum Rear Axle Load: 820 kg (including tow bar ball load).

Usage Features:

  • Manual Transmission: All 3-door models have 5 forward gears and a reverse gear.
    • City Models: Reverse gear is located beside first gear.
    • SRi Models: Reverse gear is located beside fourth gear.
    • To select reverse gear, lift the ring beneath the knob on the gear shift lever.
    • When selecting fifth gear, shift the lever sideways against light spring pressure.
  • Shift Speeds (SRi):
    Gear Change Economy Normal
    1st~2nd 15 km/h 20 km/h
    2nd~3rd 20 km/h 40 km/h
    3rd~4th 30 km/h 60 km/h
    4th~5th 40 km/h 80 km/h
    • Using 'Economy' shift speeds helps maximise fuel economy. Higher road speeds for upshifting may be necessary depending on driving conditions (load, gradient, overtaking, heavy acceleration).
  • Rear Centre Head Restraint: Adjustable to first or second position based on passenger height. For improved visibility or to fold the left-hand rear seat backrest, adjust to the lowest position by releasing locking springs and pushing down.
  • Rear Seat Access: A lever on the outer side of each front seat allows tilting the seat-back forward and sliding the seat forward for rear access. To reposition, push the seat backwards, then tilt the seat-back upright. Raising the seat-back before sliding it back will lock it, requiring manual readjustment.
  • Additional Front Seat Adjustments (SRi):
    • Lumbar Support: Rotate a wheel on the side of the seat-back. Wheel forwards increases lumbar support; wheel backwards decreases it.
    • Thigh Support: Adjust by raising a handle and moving the thigh support pad. Do not adjust while driving.
  • Front Electric Windows (SRi):
    • Main switches are on the driver's door; an individual switch is on the passenger door. Control indicators glow when operational.
    • To operate in stages, tap the switch. For full closing/opening, press the switch slightly longer. Tap again to stop movement.
    • Safety feature: If glass encounters resistance above halfway during full closing, movement stops, and the window opens again. This can be overridden by repeatedly tapping the switch to close in stages (e.g., due to frost).
    • Closing Windows from Outside: Hold the key in the door locking position until windows are fully closed.
    • Interruption of Power Supply: Full opening and closing are disabled after power interruption (battery/fuse) or low voltage. To reactivate: close doors, switch ignition on, close window, and keep switch pressed for at least 5 seconds. Repeat for each window. If the system overloads, power supply is cut off temporarily.
    • Safety Precaution: To avoid risk to children, remove the key from the ignition when leaving the car.
  • Steering Wheel Audio Controls (SRi): Audio system functions can be operated by buttons on the left and right side of the steering wheel. Refer to the supplied operating instructions for details.
  • Flat Tyre: To prise off the hub cap, use the blade end of the screwdriver provided in the kit. Position the screwdriver at the recess on the side of the hub cap and lever it outward. Alternatively, place the screwdriver in the bolt hole diagonally opposite and lever the cap off. Remove plastic caps from wheel bolts before removing the bolts. When replacing, align the pin on the back of the cap with the corresponding hole in the wheel and push firmly into place.
  • Snow Chains (SRi): Not to be used on SRi Astras due to lack of clearance with 205/50 R16 tyres.
  • ISOVIN: The car carries a body style code F08, applicable to all 3-door models.

Maintenance Features:

  • Engine Oil Level (SRi): The dipstick is at the front of the engine. Oil level should be maintained between 'Min' and 'Max' markings. Refer to page 7-3 of the Astra Handbook for more information.
  • Maintenance Schedule (SRi):
    • The SRi model Astra engine has a double overhead camshaft design with camshafts driven by an internal chain, not an externally serviceable toothed rubber belt.
    • Therefore, references to toothed belt and tensioners in the main Astra Handbook (page 12-6 and Service Coupons at 60,000 kms, 120,000 kms, and 180,000 kms) do not apply to the SRi model.
    • Service labour times for these intervals are 1.7 hours, not 3.3 hours, as shown on page 12-7 of the Astra Handbook.
    • Brake and Clutch Fluid: Change every 2 years (regardless of km).
  • Extreme Operating Conditions – SRi: If the vehicle operates under certain extreme conditions, some service items should be serviced more frequently than specified in the main Maintenance Plan.
    • Conditions:
      • A: Stop-start driving, excessive idling, low-speed operation (e.g., inner-city driving, taxi, police, door-to-door delivery).
      • B: Caravan or trailer towing, extended periods with heavy loads, or high-speed operation in temperatures above 35°C.
      • C: Extreme climates (high air pollution, airborne sand/dust, high altitude, major temperature fluctuations).
    • Additional Service Intervals:
      • Change automatic transmission fluid: @ 60,000 km or 4 years (whichever comes first) – Condition A, B, C.
      • Replace engine oil and filter: @ 5,000 km or 3 months (whichever comes first) – Condition A.
      • Air cleaner element – replace: @ 30,000 km or 2 years (whichever comes first) – Condition C.
      • Pollen filter – replace: @ 15,000 km or 1 year (whichever comes first) – Condition C.
      • Fuel filter – replace: @ 30,000 km or 2 years (whichever comes first) – Condition C.
    • These extra services are only for continuous operation under specified conditions. For one-off trips, an extra service should be for that period only. If operating continually for one month or 1,000 km under extreme conditions, additional services may be required. Discuss with a Holden Dealer service manager for advice on service frequency.
    • Ensure details of any Extreme Operating Conditions service procedure are recorded on page 12-5 of the Astra Handbook.
  • Roof Rack Loads and Towing Information: Refer to Chapter 10 in the Astra Handbook for detailed information on roof rack loads, towing loads, and towing safety.
