This is a device manual for the JF Viva, an automobile manufactured by GM Holden Ltd. It covers various aspects of the vehicle, including its dashboard, audio system, locks, driving features, fuel, emergency procedures, weekly checks, specifications, towing and loading, and cleaning.
Dashboard
The dashboard of the JF Viva features a comprehensive layout designed for driver convenience and information. Key components include:
- Gauges: The speedometer indicates vehicle speed in kilometers per hour (km/h). The odometer records total distance traveled, while the tripmeter tracks distances for specific journeys (TRIP A and TRIP B), resettable via a button. A temperature gauge monitors engine coolant temperature, with a red zone indicating overheating. A fuel gauge shows the fuel level, and a tachometer displays engine speed in revolutions per minute (rpm), with a red zone for critical speeds.
- Dimmer and Clock: A thumb wheel adjusts instrument lighting brightness when headlights or park lights are on. The digital clock displays time and has three buttons (H for hour, M for minute, S for set) for adjustment.
- Warning Lamps: Various indicator lamps alert the driver to vehicle status. These include turn signals, high beam, oil pressure (dangerously low if illuminated while driving), low fuel, brake (park brake engaged or system fault), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) (system not operating), battery (charging system problem), door ajar, boot compartment ajar (sedan only), malfunction indicator lamp (emission control system issue), hold mode (automatic transmission feature), and seatbelt reminder.
- Wipers and Washers: The windscreen wiper/washer lever controls four wiper positions (OFF, INT for intermittent with adjustable speed, LO for continuous slow, HI for continuous fast). The windscreen washer sprays fluid when the lever is pulled. Rear wiper and washer (if equipped) are activated by pushing the lever towards the dashboard.
- Headlamps: A rotary band controls parking lights and headlamps. High/low beam is toggled by pushing the lever forward/backward. A battery saver feature automatically turns off headlamps when the ignition is off and the driver's door is opened. High beams can be flashed for signaling.

Tow and Load
This section provides guidelines for towing and loading the JF Viva.
- Loading the Vehicle:
- Maximum Vehicle Payloads: Overloading is a safety hazard. Typical recommended carrying capacity (occupants at 68 kg each, luggage kg, total load kg) for Sedan, Hatch, and Wagon is 408 kg.
- Maximum Front and Rear Axle Loads: Do not exceed specified axle loads (Sedan/Hatch Front 920 kg, Rear 845 kg; Wagon Front 920 kg, Rear 950 kg). Include roof rack load.
- Notes on Loading: Place heavy objects forward and low in the luggage compartment. Unsecured objects can be thrown forward. Heavy objects can affect handling. Do not place objects in front of the rear window or on the dashboard. Roof loads increase sensitivity to crosswinds and affect handling. Do not place objects where airbags inflate.
- Roof Racks: Distribute load evenly, secure tightly. Roof loads alter handling. Consult Holden Dealer for approved rack systems.
- WARNING: Load (including roof rack) must not exceed 75 kg for wagon and 50 kg for sedan/hatch. Distribute load evenly.
- Carrying Portable Gas Cylinders:
- WARNING: Gas cylinders can leak, causing fire/explosion. Ensure adequate ventilation, restrain from rolling, and place in load area. Purpose-built compartments recommended.
- Towing:
- Trailers: Includes caravans, boat trailers, etc.
- Towing: Vehicle designed primarily as passenger car; towing affects handling, durability, economy. Refer to table for mandatory equipment.
- Overloading: Never exceed loads for towing equipment. Overloading or missing equipment may void warranty.
- Maximum Towing Capacities: Without trailer brakes: 610 kg. With trailer brakes: 1,200 kg.
- WARNING: Holden towing equipment recommended. Holden not liable for defects in non-Holden equipment or vehicle damage from its use. Avoid mixing brands.
- Recommended Procedure for Attaching a Trailer:
- Tow Ball Load: Weight on tow bar. Approximately 10% of loaded trailer mass for single axle trailers; 5-10% for multi-axle trailers. Adjust by packing trailer contents. Check before coupling.
- All Towing (before you begin): Axle loads must not be exceeded. Remove weight from vehicle rear if axle loads exceeded. Ensure packed trailer weight is within Holden approved tow bar capacity.
- Towing Precautions: Inflate tires to max recommended pressure. Tighten tow ball nut to 140 Nm. Familiarize with handling. Maintain vehicle and trailer. Use extended-arm mirrors. Re-aim headlamps if needed. Use lower gear on steep hills. Do not use axle-mounted hitches. Ensure tow bar doesn't obscure license plate. Seal mounting holes if tow bar removed. Trailer brakes mandatory for trailers over 610 kg.
- Running-in when Towing: Drive new vehicle for at least 1,500 km before towing. If towing earlier, do not exceed 80 km/h.
- Vehicle Maintenance: More frequent maintenance required when towing.
Cleaning
This section provides instructions for cleaning the interior and exterior of the JF Viva.
- Interior Cleaning:
- WARNING: Many cleaners are toxic, flammable, or damaging. Avoid acetone, lacquer thinners, enamel reducers, nail polish removers, laundry soaps, bleaches, reducing agents, carbon tetrachloride, petrol, naphtha. Ensure ventilation.
- Care and Cleaning of Upholstery: Vacuum regularly. Identify fabric type, stain nature/age, and test stain remover. Remove stains as soon as possible.
- Cleaning PVC Coated Fabrics: Wipe with dry cloth regularly. For embedded dirt, use lukewarm water and soap, soft bristle brush, then damp cloth, then dry cloth. Applies to rubber floor mats.
- Cleaning Cloth Trim: Vacuum or soft brush. Do not use whisk broom or coarse hair brush. For soiling, sponge lightly with warm water, detergent, and ammonia. Rub lightly, sponge again if needed, soak up excess fluid with dry cloth.

Soak bird droppings with wet sponge, or use water/baking soda solution. Clean small sections at a time, rinse with cold water, dry with chamois.
- WARNING: Brakes may be affected by water after washing; apply lightly to dry.
- Removing Stains (Grease, Oil, Tar): Wash regularly. Remove stains promptly. Use kerosene or turpentine for grease/oil/fresh tar, then wash/polish. Rubbing/cutting compound removes paint; use sparingly.
- WARNING: Some chemical cleaners are detrimental to automotive paint. Flush spilled petrol immediately with clean water. Do not use petrol on painted/plastic surfaces. Do not spill coolant on paintwork.
