EMERGENCIES
6-13
WARNING
Do not push start or tow start your vehicle with a at battery. If unburnt fuel were
to reach the catalytic converter and ignite, the converter could overheat or be
destroyed by backre. Therefore, if the battery is at, you can jump start, but not
push start your vehicle.
To protect your vehicle’s electrical system; never disconnect the battery when
the engine is running, never start the engine while the battery is disconnected,
never charge the battery while it is still connected to the vehicle (rst disconnect
the negative cable, then the positive cable). The polarity of the battery, i.e. the
connections for the positive and negative cables, must not be interchanged when
reconnecting. First connect the positive cable, then the negative cable.
If your vehicle does not start due to a discharged battery, it can often be started by
using energy from another battery, a procedure called jump starting.
Please read the following procedure before attempting to jump start your vehicle.
However, if after reading the following procedure you are still unsure about jump
starting we strongly recommend, for your safety and that of your vehicle, that
you leave the starting to a competent mechanic.

WARNING
Batteries produce explosive gases,
contain corrosive acids and supply levels
of electrical current high enough to cause
burns. Therefore, to lessen the chance
of personal injury when working near
a battery:
Do not expose the battery to open
ames or sparks. Battery action
generates hydrogen gas which is
ammable and explosive.
Do not smoke near a battery.
Wear eye protection such as industrial safety glasses and avoid leaning over the
battery whenever possible.
Do not allow battery acid to contact eyes or skin. Flush any contacted area with
water immediately. In case of eye contact you should seek medical help. Battery
acid also damages paint and fabrics. To minimise damage, wash all battery acid
off immediately.
Ensure any batteries that have ller caps are properly lled with uid.
Remove rings, metal watch bands and other metal jewellery before working around
the battery.
Carefully follow each step in the jump starting procedures.
Never use a quick charger to start your engine.
Do not lean over the battery during jump starting.
