LOADING THE VEHICLE
Chapter 9
TOW AND LOAD
9-2
MAXIMUM FRONT AND REAR AXLE LOADS
Do not exceed the maximum axle loads shown in the diagram, including the weight of
any tted accessories. If unsure, the vehicle should be weighed at a weighbridge. This
ensures the vehicle’s axles have sufcient strength to carry the total weight of body
and mechanicals, plus cargo and passengers, and still retain a considerable safety
margin to cope with weight transfer as the vehicle brakes, accelerates, corners and
goes over bumps.
Vehicle Rear axle load (kg) Front axle load (kg)
2WD 1,680 1,200
4WD 1,680 1,300
Note Refer to the vehicle's compliance plate for gross vehicle mass (GVM) gures.
Carrying capacity
Carrying capacity is the maximum capacity of the vehicle for the carriage of all
nonstandard items including cargo carrying devices (for example, tray or body, if
applicable), the cargo itself, occupants, optional equipment and accessories. Light
commercial vehicles, depending on their model and specication, have different
carrying capacities.
CARRYING PORTABLE GAS CYLINDERS IN VEHICLES
WARNING
Gas cylinders can leak, creating a risk of re or explosion. As a precaution, ensure
adequate ventilation when carrying gas cylinders. They must be restrained from rolling
around, and where possible, placed in the load area of the vehicle. It is recommended
that if gas cylinders are frequently transported, that a purpose-built carrying compartment
be used. Transportation of gas cylinders is regulated by legislation in some States.
