Why is it so difficult to couple my Holland FWS1 Accessories to the trailer?

      Daniel ClarkeAug 11, 2025
Difficulty in coupling to a trailer can arise from several factors. You might be trying to couple too quickly, so ensure you follow the correct procedure as described in this Owner’s Manual. The trailer could be too high, preventing the kingpin from properly entering the lock; if so, lower it according to the manufacturer's instructions. The lock may be closed, in which case you should manually pull the release handle out fully and swing the hinged lock open, or if air release equipped, set tractor brakes and actuate fifth wheel control valve to open lock.

If you're finding it hard to couple your Holland Accessories to the trailer, accumulated rust or grime might be interfering with the lock's operation. Try thoroughly cleaning the fifth wheel and re-lubricating it as described in this Owner’s Manual. Alternatively, the lock might be adjusted too tightly; check the lock adjustments according to the procedure in this Owner’s Manual.

If you're having trouble coupling your Holland Accessories to a trailer, the lock might be damaged, and the fifth wheel MUST be rebuilt using the appropriate SAF-HOLLAND service kit. Another cause could be a damaged or bent release handle, which would need replacing using the appropriate SAF-HOLLAND service kit. A jammed safety indicator could also be the culprit; inspect the release handle, and if it’s bent, replace it using the appropriate SAF-HOLLAND service kit.

If you're experiencing difficulty coupling your Holland Accessories to the trailer, it's possible that the lock jaw opening is spread due to a prior high coupling attempt. Measure the width of the opening in the jaw. If it's greater than 2.38 inches, replace it using the appropriate SAF-HOLLAND service kit. Also, a damaged top plate just below the lock adjustment pin could be the issue, in which case the entire fifth wheel top plate MUST be replaced.

      Justin YoungSep 4, 2025
If you're having trouble coupling your Holland Accessories to the trailer, a bent kingpin, damaged upper coupler, or improper use of a “lube plate” may be interfering with lock movement. You should check the kingpin and upper coupler as detailed in HOLLAND Service Bulletin XL-SB020 and repair or replace them as needed. Also, remove any improperly installed or specified lube plates, and refer to HOLLAND Service Bulletin XL-SB004-01 for lube plate warnings.
