FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Question Answer
What are the variables that affect
run time?
The estimated run time for this humidifier is based on average room
conditions. The actual run time of your humidifier is dependent on numerous
variables such as:
Air exchange in the room where the humidifier is placed.
Room construction of the room where the humidifier is placed.
Temperature of the room where the humidifier is placed.
Humidity levels in the room where the humidifier is placed.
Movement of occupants and the opening and closing of doors in the room
where the humidifier is placed.
Home furnishings in the room where the humidifier is placed.
How do I remove film on water
tank?
See Daily Maintenance instructions. Regular cleaning is recommended.
How can I extend the run time?
Run your unit on the lowest setting.
If your unit has electronics, set it to your desired humidity level. The unit
will turn on and off, which will extend the run time.
Fill the tank all the way full, place it on the base, let the water empty into
the base until it stops bubbling, then refill the tank full again. This ensures
maximum water capacity and will extend run time.

Overview

This document describes the Holmes Cool Mist Humidifier, model HCM1100, a household appliance designed to add moisture to dry indoor air, improving comfort and health. It utilizes a cool, invisible mist humidification system, drawing dry air through a rear intake grill and passing it through a moisture-laden wick filter. This filter retains minerals and deposits from the water, and the resulting moist air is then directed back into the room from the top air grill. The system is designed to provide a cool mist output that is typically not visible, which is normal for this type of humidification.

Usage Features:

The humidifier is designed for straightforward operation and includes several features to enhance user experience and ensure effective humidification.

  • Placement: For optimal performance and to prevent damage, the humidifier should be placed on a firm, flat, level, and moisture-resistant surface, at least 4 inches (10 cm) away from a wall. It should not be placed on rugs, carpets, or finished floors that could be damaged by moisture. Placing it on an inside wall near an electrical outlet is recommended, away from heat sources like stoves or radiators.
  • Power and Control: The unit operates on a 120V AC electrical outlet and features a 2-Speed Humidity Control/Power Knob. Users can adjust the humidification rate by moving the knob to the HI (2) position for maximum output or the LO (1) setting for a lower rate. It takes approximately 30 minutes for the filter to fully absorb water and for the unit to reach its maximum moisture output.
  • Water Tank and Filling: The humidifier holds about 1 gallon of water in its tank and base, capable of producing up to 1 gallon of water in a 24-hour period, depending on room humidity and temperature. To fill, the tank is removed from the base, turned upside down, and the tank cap is twisted off counter-clockwise. It should be filled with cool, fresh tap water; warm water should be avoided to prevent leaking. The tank cap must be replaced FIRMLY.
  • Tank Cap Tablet Holder: A unique feature is the cage located on the tank cap, designed to hold humidifier enhancement tablets. These tablets treat the water before it passes into the humidifier base. To use, the top of the green cage is popped off, a tablet is placed inside, and the cage top is closed. Only one tablet should be used per tank filling.
  • Aromatherapy Cup: An aromatherapy cup is integrated into the top grill of the humidifier. Users can pour designated essential oils into this cup to diffuse scents into the room. It is crucial NOT to add essential oils directly into the water tank.
  • Run Time Management: To extend run time, users can operate the unit on the lowest setting. If the unit has electronic controls, setting it to a desired humidity level will allow it to cycle on and off, conserving water. Filling the tank completely, allowing water to empty into the base until bubbling stops, and then refilling ensures maximum water capacity and extended run time.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes numerous safety instructions, including never operating the unit without water, not moving it while operating or still warm, and always unplugging it before refilling or moving. It also warns against placing anything over the moisture outlet, inserting objects into openings, or operating with a damaged cord or plug. The appliance has a polarized plug for safety, which should not be modified.

Maintenance Features:

Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the humidifier's efficient operation, to prevent the growth of algae or bacteria, and to prolong its lifespan.

  • Filter Replacement: The wick filter traps waterborne minerals and sediment. The frequency of filter replacement depends on water hardness, but under normal continuous use, a new filter should be replaced every 30 days. Replacement filters (model HWF62) can be purchased from local retailers or directly from the manufacturer.
    • Filter Replacement Process: To replace the filter, the unit must be switched OFF and unplugged. The tank and main housing are removed to access the base tray. The old filter is discarded, and weekly cleaning instructions are followed. A new filter is then inserted into the filter support in the base, followed by replacing the main housing and tank.
  • Daily Maintenance:
    1. Ensure the unit is OFF and unplugged.
    2. Remove the housing and tank, placing them in a sink or tub.
    3. Carry the base to the sink, remove the wick, drain remaining water, and rinse thoroughly to remove sediment or dirt. Wipe clean and dry.
    4. Drain and thoroughly rinse the water tank, wiping it clean and dry.
    5. Replace the filter and housing, then refill the tank with cool tap water.
    6. Follow operating instructions.
  • Weekly Maintenance (Remove Scale):
    1. Repeat steps 1-4 of daily maintenance.
    2. Clean the base by partially filling it with 8-oz cups of undiluted white vinegar or Cleanse Clean® solution (Model S1710). Let it stand for 20 minutes, cleaning interior surfaces with a soft brush. Remove scale by wiping with a cloth dampened with undiluted white vinegar.
    3. Rinse with clean warm water to remove the cleaning solution before disinfecting.
  • Weekly Maintenance (Disinfect Humidifier Base and Tank):
    1. Fill the humidifier tank halfway with water and 1/2 tablespoon of chlorine bleach.
    2. Let the solution stand for 20 minutes, swishing every few minutes to wet all surfaces.
    3. Carefully empty the tank after 20 minutes and rinse with warm water until no bleach smell is detected. Dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.
    4. Place the filter back into the tank, refill the water tank as directed in Operating Instructions, and turn the unit on.
  • Aromatherapy Cup Cleaning: The aromatherapy cup should be cleaned with a slightly wet cloth or cotton stick. Alcohol should NOT be used for cleaning.
  • Storage Instructions: When storing the humidifier for an extended period, dispose of the filters (do not leave them in the unit). Clean, rinse, and thoroughly dry the humidifier as per weekly maintenance instructions, ensuring no water remains in the unit. Store the humidifier in its original carton in a cool, dry place. It is recommended to order a replacement filter for the next year's use.

The manual also provides troubleshooting tips for common issues like the unit not turning on, minimal mist output, or the filter turning brown, offering solutions such as checking the power, allowing time for the filter to absorb water, operating on a higher setting, or replacing the filter. It also addresses frequently asked questions regarding run time variables and methods to extend run time.
