Overview

This document describes a tower fan, specifically the Holmes HT26 and HT26TG models, providing detailed information on its function, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Holmes tower fan is designed to provide cooling airflow within a room. It operates by drawing in air and expelling it to create a circulating breeze. The fan features multiple speed settings and an oscillation function, allowing it to distribute air across a wider area. It is intended for household use only and should not be used for commercial or industrial applications. The fan incorporates a safety device in its plug, specifically a replaceable fuse, which provides overload protection. If an overload or short-circuit situation occurs, the fuse will blow, indicating a safety measure has been activated.

Usage Features

The fan is straightforward to assemble and operate. Assembly typically takes 5-10 minutes and requires a Phillips head screwdriver. The process involves gently tipping the fan housing upside down, securing the two base halves together, ensuring the power cord is routed through the designated opening in the base, aligning the base holes with the fan housing, and then securing the base halves to the fan housing with five screws. Finally, the power cord is run through a cord channel underneath the base, and the fan is turned upright for operation.

To use the fan, it should be placed on a dry, level surface and plugged into a standard 120V AC outlet. The fan's functions are controlled via a "Mode Knob" located on the control panel. This knob allows users to select different settings:

  • Off (O) position: Turns the fan off.
  • Speed settings (1, 2, 3): These correspond to Low, Medium, and High fan speeds, respectively.
  • Oscillation function: The fan can operate at any of the three speed settings with or without oscillation. The Mode Knob likely has distinct positions for each speed with and without oscillation (e.g., "1 with oscillation," "2 with oscillation," "3 with oscillation").

The fan is equipped with a polarized plug, meaning one blade is wider than the other. This is a safety feature designed to reduce the risk of electric shock. The plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If it does not fit fully, the user should reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, a qualified electrician should be contacted to install the proper outlet. Users are explicitly warned not to modify the plug or defeat this safety feature.

Several important safety instructions are provided for usage:

  • Always read all instructions before use.
  • Use the fan only for its described purpose.
  • Do not immerse the unit, plug, or cord in water or spray with liquids.
  • Ensure close supervision when used by or near children.
  • Unplug the fan when not in use, when moving it, before putting on or taking off parts, and before cleaning.
  • Avoid contact with moving parts.
  • Do not operate in the presence of explosive and/or flammable fumes.
  • Never place the cord under rugs or near open flames, cooking, or heating appliances.
  • Do not operate if the cord or plug is damaged, or if the appliance malfunctions or has been dropped/damaged. In such cases, the fan should be discarded or returned to an authorized service facility.
  • Do not run the cord under carpeting or similar coverings, or route it under furniture or appliances. Arrange the cord away from traffic areas to prevent tripping hazards.
  • Do not use attachments not recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Do not let the cord hang over the edge of a table, counter, or come into contact with hot surfaces, or leave it exposed to high traffic areas.
  • Do not use outdoors.
  • To disconnect, grip the plug and pull from the wall outlet; never yank on the cord.
  • Always use on a dry, level surface.
  • Do not operate until fully assembled.
  • Do not use in a window to reduce the risk of electrical shock and injury.
  • Do not use with any solid-state speed control device to reduce the risk of fire or electric shock.
  • If the fuse blows, unplug the product, replace the fuse as per instructions, and check the product. If the replacement fuse blows, a short circuit may be present, and the product should be discarded or returned to an authorized service facility.

Maintenance Features

Proper cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the fan's longevity and safe operation. Users are instructed to always unplug the fan before cleaning.

Fan Cleaning:

  • Clean the fan with a soft cloth moistened with a mild soap solution.
  • Do not allow water to drip on or into the fan motor housing.
  • Do not use gasoline, thinner, or benzene as cleaners.
  • Periodic cleaning of the fan by lightly running a vacuum cleaner nozzle over the fan grill is recommended to remove accumulated dust or dirt.

Fan Head and Base Cleaning:

  • Use a soft, moist cloth, with or without a mild soap solution, to carefully clean the fan base and head.
  • Exercise caution around the motor housing area and prevent water or other electrical components from being exposed to water.

Replaceable Fuse:

The fan features a replaceable 5 Amp, 125 Volt fuse located in the plug. Instructions for replacing the fuse are provided:

  1. Unplug the fan. Grasp the plug and remove it from the receptacle.
  2. Open the fuse cover, located on the top of the plug, by sliding the cover down towards the prongs using a thumb or flathead screwdriver. Ensure the cover is completely open.
  3. Carefully remove the old fuse by using a small screwdriver to pry it out of the compartment by its metal ends.
  4. Place the plug on a solid, flat surface.
  5. Insert a new 5 Amp, 125 Volt fuse into the fuse compartment and use a small screwdriver to secure its metal ends into the compartment.
  6. Slide the fuse cover closed completely. If the cover is difficult to close, ensure the fuse is secured in place by pressing down on its metal ends. Users are warned that replacing the attachment plug is not allowed, as it contains a safety device (fuse) that should not be removed. If the attachment plug is damaged, the product should be discarded.

Fan Storage:

During the off-season, it is important to store the fan in a safe, dry location. The manufacturer recommends using the original (or appropriately sized) box and protecting the fan from dust or moisture.

Warranty Information:

The fan comes with a 3-year limited warranty from Sunbeam Products, Inc. (JCS). This warranty covers defects in material and workmanship from the date of purchase. JCS will repair or replace defective products or components. The warranty is exclusive and voids if the user attempts to repair or adjust electrical or mechanical functions. It is valid for the original retail purchaser and is not transferable. Proof of purchase (original sales receipt) is required for warranty performance. The warranty does not cover normal wear, negligent use, misuse, improper voltage, use contrary to instructions, disassembly, repair or alteration by unauthorized personnel, or Acts of God (fire, flood, hurricanes, tornadoes).

JCS's liability is limited; it is not liable for incidental or consequential damages, and implied warranties are limited to the duration of the express warranty. JCS disclaims all other warranties, conditions, or representations. Some jurisdictions do not allow limitations on incidental or consequential damages or implied warranty duration, so these limitations may not apply to all users.
