Overview

This document describes the HOOVER® Canister Cleaner, a household vacuum cleaner designed for efficient cleaning of both carpets and hard surface floors.

Function Description

The HOOVER® Canister Cleaner is a versatile vacuuming system that utilizes a canister unit, a flexible hose, a telescopic extension wand, and a combination rug and floor nozzle to provide thorough cleaning. It operates by creating suction to pick up dirt and debris, which is then collected in a disposable filter bag within the canister. The cleaner is equipped with various features to optimize cleaning performance and user convenience, including adjustable suction power, a variable speed control, and a selection of specialized cleaning tools.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Source: Operates on the voltage specified on the data plate located on the bottom of the cleaner.
  • Filtration System: Utilizes a multi-stage filtration system including a disposable paper filter bag (HOOVER® Allergen Filtration Type H30+ recommended), a secondary filter, and a final filter set (HOOVER part no. 40101001 recommended).
  • Cord Management: Features a cord rewind pedal for convenient storage of the power cord.
  • Nozzle Settings: The rug and floor nozzle offers two settings: "BARE FLOOR" and "CARPET," selectable via a pedal on top of the nozzle.
  • Suction Control: Includes a suction regulator on the wand and a variable speed control on the canister for adjusting suction power.
  • Bag Full Indicator: A visual indicator (from green to red) signals when the filter bag needs to be checked or replaced.
  • Tool Storage: Integrated tool storage compartment within the canister.

Usage Features

  1. Assembly:

    • Unpacking: Identify and remove all parts from the carton: canister cleaner, rug and floor nozzle, filter bag (pre-installed), hose, and telescopic wand.
    • Hose Connection: Push the hose connector firmly into the opening in the bag lid until it clicks. To disconnect, depress the buttons on the connector and pull up.
    • Wand and Nozzle Attachment: Push the telescopic wand firmly onto the hose, aligning arrows for a secure fit. Similarly, push the nozzle firmly onto the wand, aligning arrows.
    • Tool Attachment: Push tools firmly onto the hose or wand, twisting slightly to tighten or loosen.
    • Wand Adjustment: Adjust the telescopic wand length by pressing the spring latch and pulling the upper portion to the desired length, then releasing the latch to lock.
  2. Operation:

    • Power On/Off: Depress the ON-OFF pedal to turn the cleaner ON or OFF.
    • Cord Rewind: Step on the cord rewind pedal to retract the power cord, holding the plug to prevent whipping.
    • Rug and Floor Nozzle: Select the appropriate setting ("BARE FLOOR" or "CARPET") using the pedal on the nozzle for optimal cleaning on different surfaces.
    • Suction Regulation:
      • Wand Suction Regulator: Open for less suction (useful for lightweight fabrics or throw rugs), close for maximum suction.
      • Variable Speed Control: Slide the control toward "-" to reduce energy consumption and clean delicate fabrics or lightly soiled areas. Slide toward "+" for maximum cleaning power on heavily soiled areas. If the floor nozzle is difficult to push, slide the control toward "-".
    • Cleaning Stairs: Place the cleaner on its end and clean stairs from bottom to top.
    • Polarized Plug: Ensure the polarized plug is inserted correctly into the outlet (one blade wider than the other). If it doesn't fit, reverse the plug. Do not alter the plug.
  3. Cleaning Tools:

    • Crevice Tool: Ideal for tight spaces, corners, edges, dresser drawers, upholstered furniture, stairs, and baseboards.
    • Furniture Nozzle: Suitable for upholstered furniture, draperies, tapestries, mattresses, clothing, automobile interiors, and carpeted stairs.
    • Dusting Brush: Useful for carved furniture, table tops, books, lamps, lighting fixtures, Venetian blinds, baseboards, shutters, and registers.

Maintenance Features

  1. Filter Bag Replacement:

    • When to Replace: Check the bag when the indicator shows about 2/3 red, or when the cleaner's efficiency decreases. Change immediately if picking up very fine materials like powder to prevent clogging and bursting.
    • Procedure:
      1. Disconnect the cleaner from the electrical outlet.
      2. Press the bag lid latch and open the bag lid.
      3. Grasp the bag holder and pull it up.
      4. Slide the used bag out of the holder and discard it (do not discard the holder).
      5. Slide a new HOOVER® Allergen Filtration Type H30+ bag into the holder, ensuring the finger hold and opening face up.
      6. Fold the front of the bag under and slide the holder into the slot in the cleaner.
      7. Ensure the bag is below the seal, then close the bag lid.
    • Important: Only use Genuine HOOVER® Allergen Filtration Type H30+ disposable bags.
  2. Secondary Filter Maintenance:

    • Function: Protects the motor from dirt particles.
    • When to Replace: Recommended after every 5 bag changes, or if dirty.
    • Procedure:
      1. Disconnect the cleaner from the electrical outlet.
      2. Insert the new filter into the slots with the grey side facing out.
      3. Do not operate the cleaner without the secondary filter in place.
  3. Final Filter Set Maintenance:

    • When to Replace: Recommended after every 5 bag changes, or if dirty. Use HOOVER part no. 40101001.
    • Procedure:
      1. Disconnect the cleaner from the electrical outlet.
      2. Press the latch and remove the filter door.
      3. Discard the two old filters.
      4. Replace the cloth filter on the bottom, then place the foam filter on top with the dark side up.
      5. Insert the tabs on the filter door into the slots on the cleaner and snap the door closed.
      6. Do not operate the cleaner without filters in place.
  4. Clearing Blockages:

    • Prevention: Remove larger items from surfaces before vacuuming.
    • Procedure:
      1. Turn the cleaner OFF and disconnect the wand from the hand grip.
      2. Turn the cleaner ON and check the hose end for suction. Turn OFF and remove any blockages.
      3. Remove the nozzle from the wand, attach the wand to the hose, turn the cleaner ON, and check for suction. Turn OFF and remove any blockages.
      4. Before reattaching the nozzle, check the nozzle connector for blockages and remove them.
  5. Lubrication: The motor bearings are pre-lubricated for the life of the motor. Do not add lubricant, as this could cause damage.

  6. Wand Storage: The wand storage clip can be inserted into slots at the rear or bottom of the canister for convenient storage.
