Description of the automatic pulse trickle charge mode.
How to re-peak a battery pack while on trickle charge.
The Prophet Sport is an AC/DC powered peak detection fast charger designed for 4-8 cell Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries. It offers a straightforward and efficient way to charge battery packs.
The primary function of the Prophet Sport charger is to safely and efficiently charge 4-8 cell Ni-Cd and Ni-MH battery packs. Users can select a charge rate of 1, 2, or 4 amps. Once the start button is pressed, the charger initiates the fast charging process. It automatically detects when the battery pack is fully charged, at which point it transitions into a safe trickle charge mode. This trickle charge mode helps equalize cell voltage and maintain the battery's full charge, conditioning the batteries and extending their life. The charger utilizes advanced peak detection circuitry to accurately determine when a battery has reached its full capacity.
The Prophet Sport charger is designed for ease of use, though it requires some basic mechanical ability and adult supervision. It can be powered by two different sources: a standard 110V wall outlet using its AC power cord, or a 12V DC power source using the provided alligator clips. Compatible DC sources include a 12V hobby battery, a 12-volt power supply, or an automobile battery. It is crucial not to use both AC and DC power sources simultaneously. When using a DC power source, the red (positive) alligator clip should be connected to the red terminal of the DC power source, and the black (negative) clip to the black terminal. If an automobile battery is used, charging should never be done while the automobile is running.
To begin charging, the user first supplies power to the charger, which will emit a beep and its LED will flash once. Next, the battery pack is connected to the charger, resulting in another beep and the LED repeatedly blinking until the charging process begins. For 6- and 8-cell Ni-Cd or Ni-MH battery packs, the charge rate should be selected based on the battery's capacity rating. For optimum performance with 6-8 cell packs, using a DC power source is recommended, as AC power limits the charger to a maximum of 2 amps. Once the charge rate is set, pressing the "Start" button initiates charging, and the LED will glow solid red.
For 4- and 8-cell Ni-Cd or Ni-MH radio packs, the included RX charge adapter is used to connect the battery. Charge rates of 1 or 2 amps are available, with 1 amp recommended for 600mAh or lower capacity receiver packs and 2 amps for higher capacity packs. The charging process is similar, with the LED turning solid red upon pressing "Start."
Once the battery has peaked, the LED will flash, and a beeper will sound for 30 seconds. If the battery remains connected after 30 seconds, the LED will continue to flash, and the beeper will sound approximately every 90 seconds. This indicates that the charger has entered the Advanced Trickle Charge mode. During trickle charge, the charger beeps and the LED continuously flashes.
A convenient "Re-Peak" feature allows users to re-peak a battery that has already peaked and is in Advanced Trickle Charge. This is done by simply pressing the "Start" button again without disconnecting the battery. However, it is advised not to re-peak the battery more than once during a single charging process.
The charger provides visual and auditory feedback. An LED and beeper indicate when the charge is complete. The LED illuminates to indicate that the battery is charging, and flashes with beeps when the battery has peaked and entered trickle charge.
To ensure safe operation and longevity of the device, several precautions must be observed. Users should carefully read and follow all directions and warnings associated with the charger and the batteries being charged. The charger should never be connected to an automobile 12V system while the vehicle is running, nor should it be attached to AC and DC power sources simultaneously. Batteries and the charger should never be left unattended during use.
Charging should always occur on a heat-resistant surface, clear of other items, as the charging process generates heat that could damage non-heat resistant objects. The charger should be allowed to cool between charges. Correct polarities must always be observed. The device should be kept away from liquid, flammable chemicals, and moisture, and all chemicals, small parts, and electrical components should be kept out of the reach of children.
For inspection or repairs, users must obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number. The product should be securely packed in a shipping carton, noting that original boxes may not withstand shipping rigors without additional protection. Shipping should be done via a carrier that provides tracking and insurance, as Horizon Hobby is not responsible for merchandise until it arrives and is accepted at their facility. The package should include the user's complete name, address, phone number, RMA number, and a brief summary of the problem, with these details clearly written on the shipping carton.
For warranty service, the original sales receipt verifying the proof-of-purchase date must be included. If warranty conditions are met, the product will be repaired or replaced free of charge, at the sole discretion of Horizon Hobby. For non-warranty repairs, if the expense exceeds 50% of the retail purchase cost, an estimate will be provided. Users will be billed for any return freight for non-warranty repairs. Payment methods accepted include money orders, cashiers checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Unpaid or unclaimed repairs after 90 days will be considered abandoned and disposed of accordingly.
