Overview

The Hornady RAPID® Safe is a technologically advanced security device designed for the secure storage of handguns and other valuables. It offers multiple access methods, including a programmable combination code, RFID tags, and a mechanical key lock, ensuring quick and reliable access for authorized users.

Function Description

The primary function of the RAPID® Safe is to provide secure storage, preventing unauthorized access to its contents. It is designed to be a quick-access safe, allowing users to retrieve their firearm or valuables efficiently when needed. The safe operates on both wall power and battery power, offering flexibility in placement and ensuring continued functionality during power outages. It incorporates an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system, allowing for touch-free and rapid opening with programmed RFID tags. Additionally, a traditional keypad provides a backup access method with a user-defined combination code, and a mechanical barrel key offers a failsafe manual override.

Usage Features

  • Multiple Access Methods: The safe supports three distinct ways to open it:
    • RFID Tags: The RAPID® Safe comes with three RFID bracelet tags (M, L, XL), one RFID card tag, and one RFID key fob tag. Up to two RFID tags can be programmed at a time. To open the safe using an RFID tag, simply place the programmed tag approximately 1/2 inch over the "H" logo on the front panel. When operating on battery power, the ENTER key must be pressed first to activate the system before using an RFID tag.
    • Combination Code: The safe has a factory preset combination code (1-2-3-4-ENTER) which can be changed to a personalized 4, 5, or 6-digit code. To change the code, open the safe, locate the three small program buttons inside the right corner, press the top white button, wait for the amber status light to blink, enter the new code, and press ENTER. The keypad will blink twice to confirm the code is saved. When operating on battery power, the ENTER key must be pressed first to activate the system before entering the combination code.
    • Manual Key Lock: A mechanical barrel key lock is provided for manual override. To access it, the keypad panel must be carefully removed by pushing a locking tab towards the "H" logo and lifting up, taking care not to damage the attached wires. The key can then be used to unlock the safe.
  • RAPID® Sleeve: The safe includes a RAPID® sleeve designed to accommodate most 5-inch pistols and 4-inch barreled revolvers. This sleeve can be easily removed to create more space for larger handguns or other valuables. To remove, lift the levers on each side of the sleeve and pull it out. Reinstallation is the reverse process, ensuring the levers are up, the sleeve is aligned with the notches, and the levers are pressed down to lock it in place.
  • Security Cable: A security cable is included, allowing the safe to be tethered to a stationary object for added security. With the safe cover open, the lug end of the cable is placed into the security cable slot, and the lid is closed to secure it.
  • Left-Hand/Right-Hand Feature: The keypad panel can be reversed to accommodate opposite hand usage. This is done by pressing a side-locking tab and reversing the panel, again being careful with the attached wires.
  • Keypad Status Lights: The keypad features a status light that provides visual feedback:
    • Solid Red: System is powered and ready.
    • Blinking Amber: System is ready to program (for codes or RFID tags).
    • Solid Amber: Battery is low; replace batteries immediately.
    • Solid Green: System is unlocking.
  • Backlit Reader: The RFID reader (H logo) is backlit when the safe is plugged into an electrical outlet. This backlight can be turned off by opening the safe and locating the on/off switch next to the white program button. When operating on battery power, the backlit reader will switch off after 20 seconds of inactivity.
  • Anti-Tamper Feature: The keypad is equipped with an anti-tamper feature that disables the keypad for 2 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect code entries. This feature does not affect RFID tag access.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Installation and Replacement: For backup or mobile use, the safe requires eight AA alkaline batteries (not included). To install or replace batteries, the keypad panel and battery case cover must be carefully removed. It is crucial to use new alkaline AA batteries and replace all batteries at the same time. The safe is not designed to operate on a 9V battery.
  • Battery Life Indicator: A solid amber status light indicates low battery, prompting immediate replacement.
  • Recommended Battery Replacement Schedule: Batteries should be replaced every 12 months to ensure reliable operation.
  • Cleaning: While not explicitly detailed, general maintenance would involve keeping the safe clean and free of debris, especially around the keypad, RFID reader, and internal mechanisms, to ensure smooth operation.
  • Warranty and Service: The RAPID® Safe comes with a one-year limited warranty covering defects in workmanship or materials. To receive warranty service, users must register their product and obtain a return authorization number from Hornady® Security™. It is important to remove all personal property from the safe before sending it for service. Hornady® Security™ does not provide replacement barrel keys for security reasons, advising users to consult a locksmith if keys are lost.
