Overview

The StowAway® In-Wall Ironing Board is a cleverly designed, space-saving solution for your ironing needs, integrating a full-sized ironing board and storage into your wall. This innovative unit is available in two series: the 18100 series, which features a clean white finish, and the 18200 series, offered in unfinished oak, allowing for customization to match your home's decor. The primary function of this device is to provide a convenient, readily accessible ironing station that can be neatly tucked away when not in use, freeing up valuable floor space in laundry rooms, bedrooms, or closets.

Function Description

At its core, the StowAway® In-Wall Ironing Board serves as a dedicated ironing center. It consists of a cabinet (Part A) that is designed to be recessed into a wall, fitting between standard 16-inch on-center studs. Inside this cabinet, a sturdy ironing board is mounted, which can be easily lowered for use and folded back up for storage. The board itself is covered with a specially designed cover and pad (Part C), ensuring a smooth and protected surface for ironing. The cabinet also features internal shelving, providing storage for an iron, spray bottles, starch, and other ironing essentials. A garment hook (Part F) is included, which can be attached to the inside of the cabinet door, offering a convenient spot to hang freshly ironed clothes or items waiting to be ironed.

The ironing board's height is adjustable, allowing users to customize it to their preferred working level. When opened, the board can be set to a height of 36 inches and can be raised further to 38 inches. This adjustability is achieved by modifying the cutout height during installation; for example, a 25-inch cutout from the floor will result in a 36-38 inch ironing board height. The board is designed to swivel, providing flexibility and ease of use when ironing different garments. To close the unit, the board must be in its lowest position, ensuring it fits snugly back into the cabinet.

An optional accessory, the 180 Light Kit, enhances the functionality of the StowAway® ironing board. This kit includes an adjustable spotlight LED bulb, a 3-prong electric outlet, and a timer with automatic shut-off settings (15 & 30 minutes). It installs into the upper right corner of the cabinet, providing illumination for your ironing tasks and a convenient power source for your iron. It's important to note that a certified electrician should handle the wiring for this light kit.

Usage Features

The StowAway® In-Wall Ironing Board is designed for ease of use and maximum convenience.

  • Installation: The unit is installed by cutting a precise opening in the drywall (14.25" x 46.25") between wall studs. The bottom of the cutout should be positioned 25 inches off the floor for the standard ironing board height. The cabinet is then secured to the wall studs using Phillips drywall screws (Part E).
  • Door Orientation: The cabinet door (Part B) can be configured to open either to the left or to the right, depending on your preference and room layout. This is determined during the installation of the door hinges (Part D). The hinges are attached to the door first, then aligned with the cabinet frame, and secured with Phillips panhead screws (Part G).
  • Opening and Closing: To use the ironing board, simply open the cabinet door. The ironing board then lowers and extends from the cabinet. To put it away, the board is lifted near the back end, guided through curved cutouts in the cabinet, and glided into its stored position. It must be in the lower position to close the cabinet door fully.
  • Height Adjustment: The board's height can be adjusted by lifting it near the back end and guiding it through the curved cutouts in the cabinet. Reverse this process to lower it.
  • Garment Hook: The included garment hook can be installed on the inside of the cabinet door. For a left-hinged door, it's placed 6 inches from the top and ½ inch from the side of the top left corner. For a right-hinged door, it's placed 2 inches from the top and ½ inch from the side of the top right corner. This placement ensures room for the optional light kit if installed.
  • Optional Light Kit: If the 180 Light Kit is installed, it provides focused lighting for ironing and an electrical outlet for the iron, enhancing the functionality and convenience of the ironing station. The timer feature helps conserve energy by automatically shutting off the light and outlet.
  • Replacement Covers: The ironing board uses specific replacement covers with attached fiber pads, designed for its 11 x 41 inch surface. These covers have elastic edging for a better fit and are stain and scorch resistant, ensuring the longevity and performance of your ironing surface.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the StowAway® In-Wall Ironing Board is straightforward, ensuring its longevity and smooth operation.

  • Cleaning: The cabinet can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and a mild cleanser as needed. The ironing board cover can be spot cleaned and air-dried directly on the board.
  • Iron Storage: Always unplug your iron before stowing it in the cabinet. Store the iron with its sole facing the cabinet's heat-resistant plates to prevent damage to the cabinet interior. It is crucial to never leave a hot iron unattended, especially when stored.
  • Smooth Board Movement: If the ironing board does not slide up and down smoothly, the slide slots behind the metal tubing can be lubricated with wax or a bar of soap. This helps reduce friction and ensures effortless adjustment.
  • Wobbly Ironing Board: If the ironing board feels wobbly, the knob on the underside of the board can be adjusted to tighten it and stabilize the surface.
  • Stiff Swivel: When the unit is new, the cover may make the board swivel more stiffly. With use, the cover will compress and mold to the board, making it easier to move from side to side. If stiffness persists with an older unit, check and adjust the knob on the underside of the board.
  • Replacement Parts: If any hardware is missing during installation, or if replacement parts are needed, Household Essentials customer service can be contacted to expedite replacement parts. Replacement covers and pads are also available for purchase to maintain the ironing surface.

The StowAway® In-Wall Ironing Board is a practical and elegant addition to any home, offering a dedicated, organized, and space-efficient solution for all your ironing needs.
