Remote Control
Introduction
This chapter provides the following information to remotely control
the HP 4284A via the Hewlett-Packard Interface Bus (
hp-ib
).
Reference information for programming the HP 4284A
Intro duction to the Standard Commands for Programmable
Instruments (

)
Tutorial information for the SCPI programmer
Hewlett-Packard
Interface Bus
(HP-IB)
HP-IB is Hewlett-Packard's implementation of IEEE standard
488.1-1987. And IEEE standard 488.1-1987 is identical to the
original IEEE standard 488-1978.
HP-IB Connection
When conguring an HP-IB system, the following restrictions must
be adhered to.
The total length of cable in one bus system m
ust be less than or
equal to two meters times the number of devices connected on
the bus (the HP-IB controller counts as one device) and the total
length of cable must not exceed 20 meters.
A maximum of 15 devices can be connected on one bus system.
There are no restrictions on how the cables are connected together.
However, it is recommended that no more than four piggyback
connectors b e stacked together on any one device. The resulting
structure could exert enough force on the connector mounting to
damage it.
For example, a system containing six devices can b e connected
together with cables that have a total length of less than or equal to
12 meters (six devices
2
2m/device = 12 meters). The individual
length of cable may b e distributed in any manner desired as long as
the total length do es not exceed the allowed maximum. If more than
ten devices are to b e connected together, cables shorter than two
meters must b e used b etween some of the devices to keep the total
cable length less than 20 meters.
Figure 7-1 shows an HP-IB interface connector. The HP 4284A uses
all of the available HP-IB lines; therefore, damage to any connector
pin will adversely aect its HP-IB op eration.
