Overview

This document is an operator's manual and parts list for a Husqvarna LE475 / 966951101 Edger/Trimmer, model year 2008.

Function Description:

The Husqvarna LE475 Edger/Trimmer is designed to provide a professionally groomed appearance to lawns with minimum effort. It can edge lawns at walks, around flower beds, trim close to poles and hydrants, and also under fences and other hard-to-reach locations. The machine is capable of both vertical edging and horizontal trimming. Its four-wheel design allows for easy and stable operation on sidewalks or cement surfaces.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual does not explicitly list detailed technical specifications such as engine horsepower, displacement, or blade diameter. However, it does provide information on the type of fuel and oil to be used, which would be found in the separate engine manual. The blade mounting nut requires a 3/4" wrench, and the cutterhead shaft requires a 5/16" Allen wrench for blade changes. The machine uses #2 multi-purpose grease for lubrication of the cutterhead body.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The edger-trimmer is shipped mostly assembled, with the handle and throttle control requiring attachment. The handle brace, lower support, and handle are secured with six nuts and bolts. The control rod is installed into pivot holes and secured with cotter pins. The throttle wire needs to be attached to the engine carburetor if not already done.
  • Engine Preparation: Before starting, the engine crankcase must be filled with the correct grade of oil as specified in the engine manual. Fueling instructions, including the type of fuel, should also be followed from the engine manual. It is crucial to clean the area around the fuel cap before removing it to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.
  • Starting the Engine: Ensure the clutch lever is in the rear DISENGAGED position. Manually pull out the choke on the engine, then grasp the recoil starting handle and pull quickly. If the engine doesn't start after a few pulls, lower the throttle to the detented full throttle (fast) position. Once started, push the choke to the off position and use the SLOW position to idle the engine.
  • Clutch and Depth Lever: This lever engages and disengages the drive belt for the blade and regulates the depth of edging and height of trimming. Notches in the lever's base allow for adjustment.
  • Cutterhead Angle Adjustment: The cutterhead angling lever, located on the left side of the frame, allows positioning the blade horizontally for trimming or vertically for edging. This adjustment should only be made when the engine is off.
  • Wheel Positioning: The wheel adjusting spacer can be centered between the wheels for vertical edging, or the wheels can be moved to the right for trimming (horizontal position) or angle edging. For curb riding, the right front wheel is slid toward the left wheel, and the spacer is placed between the wheel and the right frame, allowing only vertical edging. Wheel positions should not be changed while the engine is running.
  • Operating Recommendations: For best appearance around flowers, the blade should be adjusted to a 20° angle cut. The cutting depth should be between 1/2" to 1" deep (with a new blade, usually the third notch of the adjustment bracket). Avoid cutting too deep to prevent unnecessary stress on the engine and accelerate blade wear. Cutting too shallow leads to rapid regrowth of roots. The cutting depth should be readjusted as the blade wears. Avoid edging or trimming in wet grass to prevent clogging and splattering. The edger-trimmer should be pushed at a moderate walking speed. For curved sections, placing the front wheels together at the right side of the trimmer-edger can make it easier to cut around corners.
  • Stopping the Engine: Disengage the edger-trimmer clutch and depth lever, then move the throttle control to the stop position. Ensure the engine is stopped and the blade is not rotating before leaving the operating position.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Safety: All maintenance and adjustments should be performed with the engine off, unless otherwise instructed. Loose clothing, watches, and jewelry should be removed before working on the machine.
  • Oil Level Check: The engine oil level must be checked every time the edger-trimmer is used to prevent extensive internal damage.
  • Oil Changes: Failure to change engine oil at recommended intervals can cause serious damage, especially with detergent oils. Increased frequency of oil changes is recommended in dusty conditions.
  • Spark Plug Maintenance: The spark plug should be checked after every 50 hours of operation and replaced at 100-hour intervals or sooner if fouled or deteriorated. The area around the spark plug should be cleaned before removal. The spark plug gap should be adjusted according to the engine manual.
  • Blade Maintenance: Sharp blade edges can cause injury, so suitable covering should be used during maintenance.
  • Blade Change: To change the blade, place a 5/16" Allen wrench on the inside of the cutterhead shaft and a 3/4" wrench on the blade nut, then turn to loosen the nut. Remove the outer washer and old blade. Replace with a Husqvarna blade (available in 3-pack), ensuring the outer washer is placed in the same direction as removed, and tighten the nut as snugly as possible.
  • Lubrication: The cutterhead body requires occasional greasing with #2 multi-purpose grease. The cutterhead mandrel has two precision-sealed bearings that do not require lubrication. All exposed bearings, linkage, and front wheels should be oiled. All nuts and bolts should be checked for tightness.
  • Storage Instructions: For long-term storage, the fuel tank should be completely drained, and the engine should be run until it stops from lack of fuel to clear the carburetor. While the engine is still warm, the crankcase should be drained and refilled with fresh oil. The spark plug should be removed, and one ounce of oil poured into the cylinder, then the starter rope pulled to spread the oil before replacing the spark plug. Dirt and chaff should be cleaned from the cylinder, cylinder head fins, and blower housing.
  • Troubleshooting Chart: The manual includes a troubleshooting chart to diagnose common issues such as engine failure to start, hard starting/loss of power, erratic operation, and poor idling, with suggested causes and remedies. For repairs beyond minor adjustments, contact a local Lawn Mower Service Shop.
  • Spark Arrestor: The equipment does not include a spark arrestor muffler. If used in certain areas (e.g., California forest/brush/grass-covered land, state/national parks), a spark arrestor must be installed and maintained in effective working order to comply with local regulations.
