Overview

This document is an owner's manual for a Grass Catcher, specifically Model Number G543ST, with MFG. ID NO. 96073002600 and Product No. 960 73 00-26, designed for a 54-Inch Mower. The manual provides instructions for assembly, operation, customer responsibilities, and repair parts.

Function Description:

The Grass Catcher is an attachment designed to collect grass clippings and leaves during mowing operations. It consists of a cover assembly, an upper chute, a lower chute, and three containers for collecting debris. The system is designed to be mounted on the rear of a ride-on mower, directing cut grass from the mower deck through the chutes into the collection containers. A full bag indicator is included to alert the operator when the containers are full or the chutes are clogged. The primary function is to maintain a clean lawn by removing clippings and leaves, preventing thatch buildup, and improving the overall appearance of the mowed area.

Usage Features:

The manual emphasizes safe operation practices for ride-on mowers, particularly when using the grass catcher.

  • Safety First: Operators are instructed to read and understand all safety rules, including disconnecting the spark plug wire before any setup, transport, adjustment, or repair to prevent accidental starting.
  • Slope Operation: Special caution is advised for slopes. Mowing should be done up and down slopes, not across, at a low ground speed. Operators should avoid starting, stopping, or turning on slopes if tires lose traction.
  • Children Safety: Extreme vigilance is required around children. Children should be kept out of the mowing area, and the machine should be turned off if a child enters the area. Carrying children on the machine is strictly prohibited.
  • Towing: Only recommended attachments that comply with tractor specifications should be towed, and at the lowest possible speed on slopes.
  • Assembly: The assembly process involves mounting the bagger support assembly to the tractor's drawbar, attaching the cover assembly, installing the collection containers, and connecting the lower and upper chutes. Different drawbar types (A, B, C, D) have specific installation instructions for the support assembly.
  • Operation Tips:
    • Always run the mower throttle at full speed when bagging.
    • Select a gear low enough for good cutting and bagging performance.
    • Overlap the width of cut as needed.
    • For tall grass, mow twice: first relatively high, then to the desired height.
    • Use the left-hand side of the mower for trimming.
    • Plastic trash bags can be inserted into containers for easier debris disposal.
    • Avoid cutting wet grass or in heavy dew, as clippings tend to be sticky and can cause clogging.
  • Full Bag Indicator: The grass catcher is equipped with a full bag indicator. Movement of a wheel within the indicator increases as bags fill, spinning fastest just before they are full. When the wheel stops, it indicates full bags or clogged chutes. Operators are advised to check/empty bags when the wheel is spinning fast to prevent clogging.
  • Clogging Resolution: If the grass catcher fails to pick up clippings, it indicates clogging. The operator must disengage blades, shift to neutral, engage the parking brake, stop the engine, raise the seat, unlatch and raise the cover, slide out containers, dispose of clippings, and then unlatch and check the chutes for debris. The air passage hole of the full bagger indicator must also be clear.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Maintenance:
    • Always observe safety rules during maintenance.
    • Check for loose fasteners before each use.
    • Clean the unit thoroughly after each use.
    • Never operate the machine in a closed area.
    • Keep all nuts and bolts tight.
    • Never tamper with safety devices and check their proper operation regularly.
    • Keep the machine free of grass, leaves, or other debris buildup. Clean any oil or fuel spillage.
    • If a foreign object is struck, stop and inspect the machine before restarting.
    • Never make adjustments or repairs with the engine running.
  • Grass Catcher Components: Components are subject to wear, damage, and deterioration. They should be frequently checked and replaced with manufacturer's recommended parts to prevent moving parts exposure or thrown objects.
  • Blade Care: Mower blades must be kept sharp for best results. Bent or damaged blades should be replaced. Refer to the tractor's owner's manual for specific blade care instructions.
  • Mower Deck Leveling: Ensure the mower deck is properly leveled for best performance. Refer to the tractor's owner's manual for instructions.
  • Pre-Maintenance Safety: Before performing any maintenance, service, or adjustments, the operator must:
    • Depress the clutch/brake pedal fully and set the parking brake.
    • Place the gearshift/motion control lever in "NEUTRAL."
    • Place the attachment clutch in "DISENGAGED."
    • Turn the ignition key to "OFF" and remove the key.
    • Ensure blades and all moving parts have completely stopped.
    • Disconnect the spark plug wire(s) from the plug(s) and place the wire where it cannot come into contact with the plug.
  • Storage: When storing the grass catcher for an extended period, it must be thoroughly cleaned of all dirt, grass, and leaves. Store in a clean, dry place. It is crucial to empty containers after each use and before storing to prevent spontaneous combustion and fire.
