the filter?
Ideally, there should be a 1–4 hour pause period between filter-
ing. Generally, the longer the pause, the better the quality up to 48
hours after which point pausing may actually deplete the nutritional
supply of the biolayer. In continuous use situations, chlorination of
post-filtered water is strongly recommended.
19. What do I do if my filter is dry?
This can happen if the filter is not used during a long period or
if it has a leak. The water level must be re-established by
pouring water through a funnel inserted into the upturned
transparent hose. Refer to Protect the biological layer on
page 9. If this does not work and there is a leak, contact Triple
Quest at 616.254.4114 for a replacement filter.
20. What do I do if my filter begins to smell or if the water be-
comes discolored or poor tasting?
The filtered water may have a bad taste and smell for different
reasons. First, does the source water smell and taste bad? If
the source water smells and tastes bad, it may be that the filter
is not able to remove certain contaminants that are in the water.
The filtered water may also smell and taste bad if the standing
water level is too high. The standing water level should be 5 cm (2
inches) above the sand. If the water level is too high, then oxygen
from the air cannot pass through the water to the biolayer. Bacte-
ria grow in the biolayer that do not require oxygen. These bacteria
make the water smell and taste bad. A bad taste and smell might
also be from improper filter maintenance or if the filter has not
been used in some time. Refer to Filter Maintenance on page 10
to correct the problem and run water through it regularly to restart
the biolayer.
