Overview

This document provides information about the Ibanez AEQ-SP2 preamp, designed for Ibanez acoustic guitars. It covers basic controls, tuner functions, and important notes regarding battery maintenance.

The AEQ-SP2 preamp serves as the control center for the amplified sound of your Ibanez acoustic guitar. It allows you to adjust the overall output level and tone, ensuring your guitar sounds its best when connected to an amplifier or sound system.

Basic Controls:

  • VOLUME: This knob controls the overall gain of the preamp. Turning it clockwise increases the output volume, while turning it counter-clockwise decreases it. This allows you to set the desired loudness of your amplified guitar sound.
  • TREBLE: This control adjusts the boost or cut of the treble frequencies. Turning it clockwise will emphasize the higher frequencies, making the sound brighter and more articulate. Turning it counter-clockwise will reduce the treble, resulting in a warmer, mellower tone. This feature is useful for shaping the clarity and presence of your guitar.
  • BASS: Similar to the treble control, the BASS knob adjusts the boost or cut of the bass frequencies. Turning it clockwise will enhance the lower frequencies, adding depth and fullness to your sound. Turning it counter-clockwise will reduce the bass, which can help to prevent muddiness, especially in live settings or when dealing with boomy acoustics. These tone controls provide flexibility to adapt your guitar's sound to different musical styles and environments.

Tuner Functions:

The AEQ-SP2 preamp includes a built-in chromatic tuner, making it convenient to keep your guitar in tune without needing an external device.

  • TUNER ON/OFF SWITCH: This button allows you to alternately turn the tuning meter on and off. Simply press it to activate the tuner display. To conserve battery life, the tuner will automatically turn off after 5 minutes of inactivity.
  • NOTE INDICATOR LED: This feature consists of a series of LEDs labeled A, B, C, D, E, F, G, along with indicators for sharps (b and #). These LEDs indicate the note of the string you are currently playing. For instance, if you are playing a G# note, both the 'G' indicator and the '#' indicator will light up. When tuning, if the note shown on the LED is different from the desired note, you should adjust the string tension (tighten or loosen) until the correct LED lights up. It's important to be careful not to overtighten the strings, as this can cause them to break. If you are unsure, it is recommended to loosen the string first and then gradually tighten it to reach the desired pitch.
  • TUNING GUIDE LED: This set of LEDs provides visual feedback on the pitch accuracy of the string being played.
    • When the string is perfectly in tune, the green LED in the middle will light up. This indicates that the pitch is correct.
    • If the pitch of the string is flat (too low), the red LED on the left will light up. This signals that you need to tighten the string.
    • If the pitch of the string is sharp (too high), the red LED on the right will light up. This indicates that you need to loosen the string. This intuitive visual guide helps you quickly and accurately tune each string.

Maintenance Features and Important Notes:

Proper maintenance, particularly concerning the battery, is crucial for the optimal performance of your AEQ-SP2 preamp.

  • Battery Replacement: You should replace the batteries if you observe any of the following issues:
    • Decreased sound quality or volume: A noticeable drop in the clarity or loudness of your amplified sound often indicates a weakening battery.
    • The tuner does not respond when you turn it on: If the tuner fails to activate or display notes, the battery may be depleted.
    • The LEDs do not operate when you turn on the tuner: If the note indicator or tuning guide LEDs do not light up, it's a clear sign of a low battery.
    • The battery check LED is lit or blinking: Some preamps include a dedicated battery check LED that illuminates or blinks when the battery level is low.
  • Preventing Unnecessary Battery Consumption: To maximize battery life, always disconnect the plug from the output jack when you are not using the guitar. Leaving the guitar plugged in, even if the amplifier is off, can drain the battery.
  • Battery Disposal: Always dispose of used batteries in accordance with local regulations. This ensures environmentally responsible handling of hazardous materials.
  • Specifications: Appearance and specifications of the AEQ-SP2 preamp are subject to change without prior notice. This is a common practice for electronic devices as manufacturers may make improvements or modifications over time.

The Ibanez AEQ-SP2 preamp is designed to provide reliable amplification and convenient tuning for your acoustic guitar, enhancing your playing experience both on stage and in practice.
