Installing PeerMaster LAN Software
Adjusting the Aging Timer
To support packet-switching functions, your PeerMaster adapter
maintains an internal database containing packet-forwarding
information. This information table can contain up to 4096 entries.
To prevent the overflow of information in the table, unused entries
are purged on a periodic basis. Aging timers define the length of
this period, with a default value of 60 seconds. Entries not accessed
during this time are purged from the database.
Once purged, a destination address is treated as an unlearned
address. Packets to unlearned destinations are sent out to all ports
to ensure delivery of the packets. When the PeerMaster adapter
receives a response from the destination, the forwarding information
is updated in the table and subsequent packets to that address are
no longer forwarded to all ports.
Thus, a long duration for the aging timer reduces traffic caused by
unlearned destinations. A duration that is too long, however,
results in unused entries remaining in the table for long periods of
time. This can result in an overflow of the table. New destinations,
which cannot be stored in the data base, are treated as unlearned
traffic.
Use the AGE keyword to customize the aging timer to meet the
specific needs of your network. This keyword specifies aging-timer
values as follows:
:LOAD C:\PATH\MXPCI4BT.LAN SLOT=11 AGE=N
:LOAD C:\PATH\VNET.LAN AGE=N
(where C: is the primary drive and PATH is the directory)
Where N specifies a duration in seconds. Thus, a value of
30 specifies a duration of 30 seconds.
Minimum value of N = 1
Maximum value of N = 65535
Default value of N = 6
Note that the keyword must be specified on the load command lines
for MXPCI4BT.LAN and VNET.LAN. Use the same value on both
command lines.
