Overview

The ICM517A is a single-phase surge protective device designed to safeguard electrical equipment from power surges. It is UL Rated as a Type 2 SPD, meaning it must be installed before the equipment it is intended to protect. This device is suitable for installation at an A/C disconnect or within an indoor/outdoor electrical panel.

Function Description:

The primary function of the ICM517A is to provide surge suppression for electrical systems. It is designed for use on circuits capable of delivering not more than 10,000 rms symmetrical amperes, with a maximum voltage of 240V and a minimum of 120V. The device protects against surges across multiple modes, including Line-to-Line (L-L), Line-to-Neutral (L-N), Line-to-Ground (L-G), and Neutral-to-Ground (N-G). When a surge occurs, the device diverts excess voltage and current away from sensitive equipment, preventing damage. A green LED indicator on the unit provides a visual diagnostic, illuminating when surge protection is present and functioning correctly.

Usage Features:

The ICM517A is designed for versatile installation in both indoor and outdoor environments, thanks to its NEMA Type 4X waterproof metal enclosure. This robust enclosure ensures durability and protection against environmental elements. The device connects via a 3/4" conduit, and the installation process involves threading the device's nipple through a knockout in the disconnect box or electrical panel, securing it with lock nuts and a sealing ring.

For 120 VAC systems, the two black wires and one white wire from the device are connected to the electrical panel or A/C disconnect. In an electrical panel, the black wires connect to the closest single-pole breaker, and the white wire connects to the neutral bus. In an A/C disconnect, these wires connect to the load side terminals. The green wire is always routed to the grounding lug.

For 240 VAC systems, the two black wires connect to the closest two-pole breaker in an electrical panel or to the load side terminals in an A/C disconnect. The white wire connects to the neutral bus, and the green wire connects to the grounding lug. It is crucial to keep the device's wires as short as possible during installation to maximize response time and effectiveness of the surge protection. The device is intended for connection only to the panel, and all wiring must conform to national, state, and local electrical codes, requiring 14AWG wire or larger.

Maintenance Features:

The ICM517A is designed as a maintenance-free unit, as it contains no serviceable or replaceable parts. This means that if the device ceases to function, as indicated by the absence of the green LED light when power is present, the entire unit must be replaced. Periodically checking the status light is the primary maintenance task. If the light is not illuminated, users should first verify that power is present at the disconnect or breaker where the ICM517A is mounted. If power is confirmed, but the light remains off, it signifies that the surge protection is no longer active, and the unit requires immediate replacement.

The device comes with a limited lifetime product warranty, offering up to a 3-year $25,000 connected equipment warranty. This warranty underscores the manufacturer's confidence in the device's longevity and performance. Users are advised to register their product for warranty purposes.

The installation instructions emphasize safety, requiring the user to turn off power at the main service panel before installation to prevent electrical shock. The warning "DO NOT OPEN" further reinforces that the device is not user-serviceable and attempting to open it could pose a shock hazard.
