Overview

The Icom RMK-3 Separation Kit is an accessory designed to enhance the installation flexibility and operational convenience of compatible mobile transceivers, specifically the IC-F5060 series. This kit allows the transceiver's front panel to be mounted separately from its main body, which can be particularly useful in vehicles or other installations where space is limited or where optimal viewing and access to the control panel are desired.

Function Description:

The primary function of the RMK-3 is to enable the remote mounting of a mobile transceiver's front panel. This is achieved by providing the necessary hardware and cabling to separate the control head from the main radio unit. The kit facilitates a clean and secure installation, allowing the main body of the transceiver to be hidden away, perhaps under a seat or in the trunk, while the front panel is mounted in a more accessible location, such as on the dashboard or a console.

The kit includes two main attachment components: one for the front panel and one for the main body. These attachments serve as interfaces for the separation cable and provide secure mounting points. The separation process involves carefully detaching the front panel from the main body, connecting a flat cable and a ground cable (supplied with the RMK-3) to bridge the separated components, and then reassembling the modified units.

Important Technical Specifications:

While the manual does not list specific technical specifications for the RMK-3 kit itself (such as dimensions or weight), it does highlight the required external components for its operation:

  • Separation Cables: The RMK-3 requires an optional separation cable to connect the separated front panel and main body. Compatible cables include:

    • OPC-607: 3 meters (9.84 feet) in length.
    • OPC-608: 8 meters (26.3 feet) in length.
    • OPC-609: 1.9 meters (6.3 feet) in length. (For the Europe version, only the OPC-609 is available.) These cables provide the electrical connection between the two separated units, transmitting control signals, audio, and power.
  • Mounting Weight Capacity: The kit's mounting hardware is designed to support a thick surface capable of holding more than 1.5 kg (for overhead mounting). This indicates the robustness of the mounting brackets and screws provided.

  • Compatibility: The instructions explicitly state that the illustrations are based on the IC-F5060 series transceiver, implying that the kit is primarily designed for this series or similar Icom mobile transceivers.

Usage Features:

  • Enhanced Installation Flexibility: The core benefit of the RMK-3 is the ability to install the transceiver in a wider range of configurations. This is particularly useful in vehicles where dashboard space is premium, allowing the main unit to be stowed out of sight while the control panel remains easily accessible.
  • Two Mounting Styles: The kit supports two types of mounting for the front panel:
    • Overhead Mounting: This style is suitable for mounting the front panel on the underside of a dashboard, ceiling, or other overhead surface. It utilizes flat washers, spring washers, and screws (self-tapping screws for thick surfaces) to secure the bracket.
    • On-board Mounting: While not explicitly detailed with a separate illustration for the front panel, the main body attachment shows an "on-board" style, suggesting a direct surface mount. The general instruction to "Mount the front panel and the attachment securely with the 4 supplied screws to a thick surface" applies to both.
  • Secure Connections: The design emphasizes secure connections for both the flat cable and the ground cable, ensuring reliable operation after separation. The instructions specifically warn against inserting the flat cable upside down.
  • Comprehensive Hardware: The kit includes a variety of hardware components to facilitate installation, such as:
    • Main body attachment
    • Front panel attachment
    • Mounting bracket
    • Flat cable
    • Flat washers (M5)
    • Spring washers (M5)
    • Mounting screws (M5x12)
    • Self-tapping screws (M5x16)
    • Nuts (M5)
    • Bracket screws This comprehensive set ensures that users have the necessary components for a complete installation.

Maintenance Features:

The manual primarily focuses on the installation process rather than ongoing maintenance. However, several aspects can be considered "maintenance features" in the context of initial setup and potential re-configuration:

  • Clear Disassembly and Reassembly Instructions: The step-by-step guide for separating the front panel, connecting the cables, and reassembling the components is crucial for proper installation and any future re-configuration or troubleshooting. This includes specific instructions for unscrewing the bottom cover, disconnecting the original flat cable, and removing rear plates.
  • Precautionary Measures: The "CAUTION!" regarding turning off the power before separation is a critical maintenance-related instruction, preventing potential damage to the transceiver during the modification process.
  • Cable Management: The design incorporates cable grooves on the back of the attachments, allowing for neat and secure routing of the optional separation cable, which contributes to a tidy installation and protects the cable from damage.
  • Component Identification: The illustrations clearly label each component and screw, making it easy for users to identify and handle the parts correctly during installation or if any part needs to be replaced. For instance, it specifies using the screw removed from the circuit board in step ⑤ for connecting the cable lug.
  • Troubleshooting Guidance (Implicit): While not explicit troubleshooting, the detailed instructions on ensuring correct cable insertion ("not upside down") implicitly guide users to avoid common installation errors that could lead to non-functionality, thereby simplifying potential troubleshooting.

In summary, the Icom RMK-3 Separation Kit is a practical solution for users seeking greater flexibility in mounting their Icom mobile transceivers. Its design focuses on ease of installation, secure connections, and robust mounting options, all while maintaining the functionality of the transceiver's control panel.
