Overview

The Spa eXact® EZ Photometer is an advanced digital photometer system designed for accurate water testing in spas, providing lab-quality results on-site. It is engineered for ease of use and reliable performance, making spa water quality maintenance straightforward.

Function Description:

The Spa eXact® EZ Photometer measures various water parameters using a digital display and specific test strips. It operates by detecting color changes in the water sample after a test strip is introduced, providing a numerical reading for each parameter. The device is waterproof (IP-67) and features a built-in 4ml sample cell for collecting water samples. It includes a "READ" button to start the test timer, a "MENU" button to cycle through test menus, and a "ZERO/ON" button to power the meter on and establish a baseline for testing. The system is designed to provide digital accuracy for better spa care.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Waterproof Rating: IP-67
  • Sample Cell: Built-in plastic 4ml cell
  • Battery: Requires Four (4) AAA batteries (not included)
  • Calibration: All tests are calibrated at 100°F / 38°C using certified reference standards and spectrophotometric methods. The algorithms are designed to correlate with AWWA, US EPA, DIN, and ISO reference test methods for chlorine.
  • Wavelength: Uses a 525nm wavelength for DPD tests, meeting compliance requirements for measuring between 490 and 530nm.
  • Storage: Can store up to 20 results per test menu, totaling 100 results in memory.
  • Auto-shutdown: Features a 5-minute automatic shutdown timer.
  • Parameters Tested (with corresponding part numbers, ranges, resolutions, and accuracy):
    • eXact Spa Water Refill Kit: Part # 486212, N/A
    • Bromine, Total: Part # 486636, Range 0.08 - 17 ppm, Resolution 0.01 (0-2.0) / 0.1 (2.1-17 ppm), Accuracy 7.5%
    • Alkalinity, Total: Part # 486641, Range 11 - 200 ppm, Resolution 1, Accuracy 5.5%
    • Calcium (as CaCO3): Part # 486629, Range 19 - 550 ppm, Resolution 1, Accuracy 5%
    • Chlorine, Free (DPD-1): Part # 486637, Range 0.05 - 12 ppm, Resolution 0.01 (0-2.99) / 0.1 (3-5.9) / 1 (6-12), Accuracy 5%
    • Chlorine, Combined (DPD-3): Part # 486638, Range 0.05 - 12 ppm, Resolution 0.01 (0-2.99) / 0.1 (3-5.9) / 1 (6-12), Accuracy 5% (requires Free Chlorine DPD-1 to be run first)
    • Chlorine, Total (DPD-4): Part # 486670, Range 0.05 - 12 ppm, Resolution 0.01 (0-2.99) / 0.1 (3-5.9) / 1 (6-12), Accuracy 8%
    • pH: Part # 486639-11, Range 6.0 - 8.5 pH, Resolution 0.1, Accuracy 5%
  • DPD Test System Compliance: USEPA (DIN Standard 38 408 G4, ISO 7393/2) accepted for Free and Total Chlorine testing requirements. The eXact® Strip Micro CL (DPD-1, DPD-3, DPD-4) deliver the same chemicals in identical proportions as specified by AWWA method 4500-CI G.

Usage Features:

  • Standard Strip Method: This method is used for Total Alkalinity, pH, Free Chlorine (DPD-1), Total Bromine, and Calcium Hardness (20-second count-up).
    1. Remove one eXact® Strip Micro from its packaging.
    2. Turn the meter on by pressing ZERO/ON. The display will show the current MENU and the last test result.
    3. Press MENU repeatedly until the display shows the desired parameter (e.g., "CL1" for Free Chlorine).
    4. Rinse the sample cell three times with the water sample, then fill the built-in sample cell.
    5. Press ZERO/ON. The display will show "0 PPM" or "PH".
    6. Dip the eXact® Strip Micro into the sample cell and simultaneously press READ. A 10-second countdown timer will start. Move the strip gently back and forth (approx. 2 strokes/sec).
    7. Remove and discard the strip after "1" disappears from the display.
    8. The meter will measure the sample, and the result will be displayed.
  • Combined/Total Chlorine Test: This is a continuation of the Standard Strip Method after running Free Chlorine (DPD-1). The sample should NOT be discarded after the Free Chlorine test.
    1. Remove one eXact® Strip Micro CL (DPD-3).
    2. With the DPD-1 sample still in the cell, press ZERO/ON. The display will read "0 PPM".
    3. Dip the eXact® Strip Micro CL (DPD-3) into the cell and simultaneously press READ. A 10-second countdown timer will start. Move the strip gently back and forth.
    4. Remove and discard the strip after "1" disappears.
    5. The meter will display the Combined Chlorine value.
    6. To obtain the Total Chlorine value, press READ again.
  • Tips for Optimal Accuracy:
    • Rinse the sample cell three times with the sample water before testing.
    • Take spa water samples 18 inches below the surface.
    • Fill the cell to capacity (4ml) without splashing.
    • Test immediately after filling the cell.
    • Use the cell cover when zeroing and reading samples outdoors to minimize sunlight interference.
    • Discard any noticeably smaller or larger strips.
    • Dip the strip for the entire countdown.
    • Each eXact® Strip Micro is for single use only.
    • Dry the outside of the meter before storage.
    • Remove batteries for prolonged storage.
    • Store the meter and test materials away from direct sunlight and chemical storage areas, and avoid temperatures above 90°F (32°C).
    • Ensure the O-ring is attached to the screw when installing batteries.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning the Sample Cell: Fill the sample cell with water and use the enclosed cleaning brush to scrub it thoroughly. Rinse the cell. Dish soap or distilled white vinegar can be used for cleaning if needed. Solvents like acetone should NEVER be used. Cleaning the cell with water and a brush after each test is recommended for best accuracy and prior to storage.
  • Battery Installation: Requires a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw from the base. Install four new AAA batteries, then replace the base firmly while tightening the screw. The meter will power on automatically.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Dim screen or no response: Check for low battery; replace batteries.
    • LO on LCD Display while zeroing: Could be low battery, dirty cell, cloudy sample, or bad LED. Replace batteries, clean cell, dilute sample/use sieve, or contact ITS.
    • HI/LO on LCD Display while reading: Result is above/below detection level; re-run test to verify.
    • LO flashes then Err for Combined Chlorine: Improper test procedure; re-read and follow directions carefully.
    • HI flashes then Err for Combined Chlorine: Result is above detection level; dilute and re-run test.
    • Total Chlorine result less than Free Chlorine: Improper test procedure; re-read and follow carefully.
