The speed limiter brakes automatically so that
youdonot exceed the set speed. Youmustse-
lectalower gearingood time on long and steep
downhillgradients, especialIy if the vehicleis
laden or towing atrailer. For vehicles with auto-
mati
ctransmission, you need to have selected
manual drive program M(see
“Manual drive
program” earlier in thissection
). By doing so,you
will make useofthe brakingeffect ofthe engine.
This relieves the load on the brakesystem and
prevents the brakes from overheating and wear-
ing tooquickly. If youneed additional braking,

continuously.
Youcan set avariable or permanent limit speed:
•
Variable
for speed limits, e. g. in built-up ar-
eas.
•
Permanent
forlong-term speed restrictions,
e.g. when driving with winter tyres fitted.
The speed indicatedinthe speedometer may
differ slightly from the speed stored.
CAUTION
Ifyoufail toadapt your drivingstyle, the speed limiter
canneither reducethe risk of an accident nor override
thelaws ofphysics. The speed limiter cannot take into
accountroad, weather or traffic conditions. The speed
limiter is only an aid. Youare responsiblefor the dis-
ta

he vehicle in front, for
ve
hicle speed, for
brakingingood time, and for staying in lane.
If there is achangeofdrivers, advisethe new driver of
the speedstored.
WARNING
•
Always observe posted speed limits. Do not set
thespeed over them.
•
Alwaysconfirm thesetting statusof the speed lim-
iter on the vehicle information display.
When thespeed limiter is on, the cruise control
or the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system
(where fitted) cannot be operated.

With the cruise control lever, you canoperate
cruise control or Intelligent cruise control and
the variable speed limiter. The LIM indicator
lamp on the cruise control lever indicates which
systemyou have selected:.
•
LIMindicator lamp off: cruise control or intelligent
cruise control is selected (if they are active).
•
LIM indicator lamp on: variable speed limiter is se-
lected.
When the engine is running, youcan usethe
cruise control lever to limit the speed to any
speedbetween 30 km/h and the technicallyper-
mitted maximum speed of the vehicle. If the set
value of the permanent speed limiter is lower
then thi
